Net retrieval rates were about twice thoseemployed from August 1979 to July 1980 (Phase I1sampling as described by Brewer and Smith 1982),but replicates were not combined, i.e., the nets filteredabout 6-8 m3 of water per meter of depth. Proceduresand assumptions for processing fish eggs and larvaewere the same as those described by Brewer and Smith(1982), except that no aliquots were taken. Sampleswere 100% sorted from either the port or starboard sideof the bongo plankton sampler.Species of the genus Parafabrux are not separable atall stages (Butler et al. 1982) and have therefore beentreated together as a single taxon. However, progresshas been made in the identification of Paralichthyscafifornicus larvae', and the abundance of this speciesas reported here is for the first time uncontaminatedwith that of the similar Xystreurys fiolepis.Areal EstimatesThe transects sampled during this project areassumed to be representative of the coastal zone shorewardof 75 m in the Southern California Bight. Thus anestimate of the magnitude of ichthyoplankton populationsin the narrow band of nearshore waters along thecoast can be based on data from these transects.'Carlson-Oda, D. The maps were juxtaposed, and acomposite made that had 10-m intervals out to 100 m.The 75-m contour was drawn in (Figure 1). We drewthe 20 sampling transects approximately perpendicularto the 75-m contour, then drew lines perpendicularfrom the midpoints between the intersections. Thelatter set of lines defined 20 blocks, centered on thetransects, on which all areal determinations werebased. Block 1 (CalCOFI line 80.8 off Cojo Bay) wasbounded on the northwest by a line extending fromPoint Conception perpendicular to the 75-m contour, and block 20 (CalCOFI line 94.7 off Imperial Beach)55
