It was most abundantbetween San Francisco and Monterey (lines 63 and67), where S. jordani was 23.4% of all rockfish larvae,and in the Channel Islands (lines 83 and 87), where itwas 12.9% of all larvae. S. paucispinis accounted for3.<strong>27</strong>% of all rockfish larvae. Its distribution was disproportionatelyhigh between the abundance peaks ofall rockfish larvae. In this area (lines 70-80) itaccounted for 5.0% of all rockfish larvae. S. levis wasthe least abundant of the four species, constituting only0.28% of all rockfishes. It was most abundant in theChannel Islands area, where it accounted for 0.73% ofthe larvae on the three lines 83-90. S. macdonaldilarvae amounted to 0.68% of the total rockfish larvae.They were most abundant on line 117, where theyequalled 11.14% of all rockfish larvae. However,smaller numbers of S. rnacdonaldi to the south of thisarea constituted a larger portion of the population (upto <strong>27</strong>.8% on line 130) as numbers of other speciesdecreased rapidly.Length compositions (Tables 11- 14) for S. jordaniand S. paucispinis show an apparent increase in thepercent of larger larvae as the season progresses; thisis not apparent for the two less-abundant species.However, most of the larvae for all four species aresmaller, more recently hatched larvae.Moser et al. (1977) give the size of newly hatched S.paucispinis and S. rnacdonaldi as 4.5 mm, S. levis as5.0 mm, and S. jordani as 5.4 mm. About 87% of S.jordani, 78% of S. paucispinis, 83% of S. macdonaldi,and 70% of S. levis were within 1 mm of the size ofnewly hatched larvae (Figure 5). This indicates that,unless rockfish larvae have exceptionally slow growth,a large portion of captured larvae were spawned duringthe month of capture. The decrease in numbers oflonger larvae indicates a very high mortality combined128
