E U R Y D I C Esuperyacht innovation for the 21 st CenturyTHE WORLD SUPERYACHT AWARDS - YOUNG DESIGNER OF THE YEAR 2009

E U R Y D I C EEURYDICE, the most innovative superyachtof the 21st Century, has been conceivedthrough the need to balance eleganceand performance with economic andenvironmental operation. Designedusing Paramarine®, the Design Team hasconsidered numerous design optionsand arrangements. The result is a highlyoptimised, elegant and efficient designwhich has lower operating costs, weight andenvironmental impact. EURYDICE’S noiseand emissions levels will be significantlylower than contemporary designs.EURYDICE is highly manoeuvrable andextremely stable, with improved passengercomfort and vast areas available forentertaining or simply relaxing.EURYDICEsuperyacht innovation for the 21 st CenturyLOALWLBOADISPLACEMENT82m75.5m22m1,030 tonnesELECTRIC PROPULSION2 x 1MW Diesel Generator2 x 2MW Diesel Generator2 x Switchboards3 x Electric motors2 x Transformers3 x ConvertersPROPELLERS3 x Ulstein Aquamasterazimuthing pullingpropellerBow thrusters SchottelSTT1 530 kWSPEED [ max / cruise ]21 / 11.5 knotsFUEL CAPACITY220,000 litresRANGE6000nm at cruise speedDECK SURFACE3,150 m 2WATERMAKERHEM 30F / Duplex / 2100FRESH WATER CAPACITY40,000 litresSEWAGE WATER35,000 litresSEWAGE TREATMENT SYSTEMVeolia WWT 3 BiopurBALLAST WATER32,600 litresCONSTRUCTIONWelded aluminiumBoldit for deckOWNER / GUESTS : 121 owner suite1 VIP suite4 guest suitesCREW : 161 skipper room1 engineer room7 double crew roomsChris Burden : GRC LtdManaging Naval ArchitectJulien Cuzon : GRC LtdNaval ArchitectSophie Chudziak : GRC LtdNaval Architect

EURYDICESUPERYACHT INNOVATION FOR THE 21 ST CENTURYEURYDICE combines efficiency, comfort and elegance. Thephilosophy of the design is driven by these three themes andbalances art with science. The idea of a trimaran/monohullhybrid is inspired by the pursuit of a low environmental impactyacht with large usable deck areas whilst maintaining comfortand aesthetics to the highest possible level.Every aspect of EURYDICE’s design has been optimised usinginnovative design techniques, with numerous differentconfigurations having been generated, tested and compared. In order to ensure that EURYDICE would achieve the highestlevel of performance, the design team has investigated anumber of different concepts in the initial phase of the project.Out of several novel hullforms assessed, the trimaran hullformappeared to be the configuration that best suited the designphilosophy:• Trimarans are by nature innovative.• Trimaran concept is flexible and allows a large variety offorms to be generated.• The use of narrow hulls provides significant reductionin hydrodynamic resistance, minimising environmentalimpact.• The seakeeping performance of a trimaran can beoptimised by changing the geometry of its outriggers• Trimarans have enhanced stability• The deck space in a trimaran can be much higher than inan equivalent monohullGiven the prominence of Innovation in the designrequirements, novel design techniques were preferred to atraditional design spiral approach. A holistic process has beendeveloped by the design team, in which every attribute ofthe design has been linked together making the process ofglobal optimisation feasible. This implied the creation of afully parametric model within Paramarine® and the systematicalteration of the design variables. The design process used in this project is a combination ofestimation and analysis, where estimations (e.g. statisticalanalysis) are applied in the early stage of the design and theaccuracy of the model and confidence in the design is graduallyincreased through the use of detailed analysis.Once the initial dimensions were determined, the Early StageDesign (ESD) module of Paramarine® was used to collatedesign requirements, model definition and analysis together toestablish the form, function and layout of the design. In ESD, the design is broken down hierarchically in termsof Buildings Blocks. Each Building Block is then assignedcharacteristics in terms of weight, space and volume as well asmanning and power if necessary. These are specified as beinga supply or demand on a characteristic. Audits are performedby a standard classification breakdown system to check thatsupply meets demand for every assigned characteristic in thedesign. This ensures the creation of a balanced design, which iscontinually assessed as the design develops. At the final stage of the process, the team performed a globaloptimisation, where the main dimensions and structuralparameters of EURYDICE were varied in order to minimise thefuel consumption, and maximise the space and comfort of thesuperyacht.EURYDICE has been designed to Lloyds Special Service Craft,IMO and HSC 2000 regulatory bodies. EURYDICE’s trimaranhullform, Lloyd’s compliant compartmentation and doublebottom arrangement gives her exceptional damage stabilityin both single compartment and raking damage. Her uniquehybrid hullform provides an innovative yet stable solution inthe intact condition whilst still exhibiting low enough valuesof GM to provide acceptable passenger comfort. The verynature of her design allows EURYDICE to provide significantimprovements to passenger comfort with vast areas of usabledeck, whilst delivering an efficient hullform minimising thenecessary installed power. By performing a number of designiterations the size and positions of EURYDICE’s hulls have beenoptimised to reduce the installed power requirements, resultingin this elegant hybrid design. With a specific fuel consumption of 425 l/hr at cruise speedand a range of 6000 miles, Eurydice is more than capable oftransatlantic passages making her available for charter in boththe Caribbean and Mediterranean.EURYDICE’s low installed power and the nature of her dieselelectric prime movers helps to reduce operating costs. Dieselelectric propulsion can deliver a flexible yet highly efficientsolution to the problem of balancing hotel and propulsiveloads, with the ability to operate generators at optimal rpmthereby reducing emissions, sound and vibration pollution. Themain machinery raft has been positioned to optimise weightdistribution and the mounting arrangements will be configuredto minimise noise transmission and radiation on and off board. The main machinery selection and arrangement providessignificant advantages over conventional diesel or gas turbinesolutions seen in current yacht designs.By positioning two smaller propulsors forward between thecentral hull and outriggers and a single larger propuslor in placeof a conventional propeller a highly efficient configuration isprovided. All propulsors operate in undisturbed flow with theabsence of upstream appendages. In addition, the forwardpropulsors operate in a slower fluid flow due to the interactionof the hulls. Within EURYDICE’s design constraints ‘Azimuthingpulling propellers’ deliver the quiet, efficient yet feasiblepropulsion solution. Being relatively small and lightweight,‘Azimuthing pulling propellers’ have a reduced form drag andhave a minimal impact on localised structural enhancements.EURYDICE’s dry-dock provides readily available and safeaccess to her tender in a stable and stationary condition. Incombination with the large ‘touch ‘n’ go’ helicopter deck, thisfacilitates safe and easy transfer of owner and guest to and fromthis exceptionally stable yacht. As a charter or privately owned vessel, EURYDICE can deliverall the recreational facilities demanded by such a market. Withfolding platforms that double up as technical spaces, Eurydiceprovides additional space for storing small recreational craft andprivate balconies for guests. The elevated infinity swimming pool on the aft deck, the largelounges/accommodation spaces and purpose built gym helpto secure EURYDICE’s claim as the most innovative Superyachtdesign of the 21 st Century.
