security: IFSECNew University campus lets Payne Security takethe strain out of issuing its state-of-the-art id cardsNewly created higher educationestablishment University CampusSuffolk (UCS) has chosen PayneSecurity, to provide a completemanaged service for the manufactureand fulfilment of high-quality, multifunctionaland cost-effective ID cards.University Campus Suffolk opened in 2007 as acollaborative venture between the University of EastAnglia and the University of Essex. The newestablishment was created to offer a dedicated basefor the county’s higher education needs.As part of its creation, UCSneeded to implement an IDcard system that woulddouble as an access systemfor security purposes, and asa means of compliance withthe legal requirement forstudents to prove theiridentity in examination andother conditions.An essential element of thebrief was to ensure that theID cards are future-proof. Although the universitycurrently comprises five sites (a central campus inlpswich with centres around the county and in GreatYarmouth), UCS is building its own bespoketeaching complex and wanted to maximise theadvantages that state-of-the-art ID technology canprovide.“We are very excited by the possibilities afforded byMifare contactless smart cards,” explains CohnMoody, who is co-ordinating the implementation forUCS. “Not only do they provide an effective meansof security, they will also enable us to offer addedvalue options to students such as cashless vending,or a fast, user-friendly means to charge for essentialservices such as photocopying.”At the same time, UCS needed to ensure that thecard was compatible with its existing premises andservices, requiring the inclusion of a magnetic stripefor door access and a barcode for the university’slibrary.Payne Security had previously supplied many of thecolleges, whose higher education is now part ofUCS, making it the ideal candidate to meet its IDcard needs. The company was quick to realise thatUCS would benefit from its recently launched cardmanagement service, as itmade practical sense forPayne Security to takeresponsibility formanufacturing andfulfilment processes out ofUCS’ hands.“This is a huge bonus forus,” confirms CohnMoody. “With five sites,we would need to investin multiple in-house IDcard production facilities to process all of our cardrequirements. It would also take up a huge amountof staff time, and the inclusion of complex Mifaretechnology would further complicate our ability toproduce the cards.“In contrast, the service offered by Payne Securitydelivers a high quality ID card solution that alsosaves a significant amount of time and capital costscompared to an in-house method,” he adds.With Payne SecuritVs card management service,UCS simply needs to supply the cardholder’s photoand personal data, via a secure server, to thecompany’s card production facility in Mold. There,the cards are produced using Payne Security’s stateof the art industrial digital press, offering exceptionalreproduction and card quality at high speeds.Crucially, all graphics and variable data are ‘lockedin’ the core of the card as part of the manufacturingprocess, which not only adds extra durability to thefinished card but also provides greater security asnone of the information can be scratched off thecard surface.Payne Security’s design team worked closely withUCS to devise a highly visible design template forthe ID card. As well as a prominent photograph ofthe cardholder, a colour-coding system is used todifferentiate staff, regular students and thosegranted permission to visit the university’shealthcare department. The correct card design isthen produced automatically when sent to the digitalpress according to the criteria and data sent toPayne Security.
