Withcost savings in excess of £1.1 millionper annum as well as reduced CO2emissions output, Dalkia’s integratedapproach to cost and carbon savings –CarbonCare – is delivering energysavings in line with Tesco’s policy toreduce electrical consumption. With over 1,988 stores covering an area of around27.8 million square feet, Tesco requires an efficientdistribution network to support and effectively supplythe nationwide stores. As part of Tesco’s programmeof activity to tackle climate change, it has a policy ofreducing energy consumption across its stores anddistribution networks. In order to meet this aim Dalkia has usedCarbonCare, its sustainable energy services solutionto implement phase one of a wide ranging energyand lighting improvement across 26 of Tesco’s largedistribution centres. The services cover: theoptimisation of gas, electricity and water usage, retrofitting of new control systems, upgradingheating, ventilation and dehumidifier plant equipmentwithin the refrigerated zones of the centres, replacing all inefficient lighting with modern energyefficient units, installing effective lighting controllinked to sensors and improving maintenanceschedules and programmed works to minimizedisruption to the centres.By executing this carefully targeted programme, allsites have now lowered their energy consumptionand have gained from improved electricity, gas andwater supplies whilst reducing CO2 emissions. The areas of improvement of phase one can beseen in the ambient zones which have gained fromhigher performance heating, ventilation and lighting, while the new and improved control systems havebeen enhanced to optimise energy efficiency. Thelighting levels have been significantly increased toprovide the same light level, but with better colourrendition, whilst cutting energy costs. The offices associated with the distribution centreshave also benefited from the new programme.Effective controls in the offices ensure efficient useof daylight through the 24 hour work day and useoccupancy sensors to switch off any lights that arenot needed by the office staff.Reader Reply No: 111113It’s a wrap with aStannah goods liftA1000kg Stannah Goodsmaster lifthas been installed for Dairy Crestin their Frome cheese productspackaging centre. The goods only lift carries packaging materialsfrom a newly extended first floor storagearea to the production floor below, without the needfor manual handling or carrying goods via astairway.
