The Town<br />
of Nováky<br />
is located<br />
in the<br />
centre of<br />
the Hornonitrianska valley. It<br />
is situated 140 km away from<br />
Bratislava and forms part of<br />
the Trenčín Self-Governing<br />
Town of Zvolen<br />
The town of<br />
Zvolen is the centre<br />
of Pohronie, it<br />
has a rich history<br />
dating back 760<br />
years.<br />
Once a royal town, today<br />
Zvolen is a district centre with<br />
a vibrant active life. Visitors are<br />
Zvolen Castle<br />
greeted by the Zvolen Castle,<br />
which dominates the town. It<br />
was built as the hunting lodge<br />
of King Louis I, the Great of<br />
Anjou. Presently, it houses a<br />
seat of the Slovak National<br />
Gallery. Every year, in the<br />
castle grounds the international<br />
theatre and opera fes-<br />

Region. The fi rst written mention<br />
about Nováky dates back<br />
to 1113 and is recorded in<br />
the Zobor Document of the<br />
Zobor Abbey.<br />
The Town of Nováky is the<br />
most industrial town of the<br />
Upper Nitra Region. It has<br />
chemical industry – Novácke<br />
chemické závody a.s., energy<br />
industry – ENEL Elektráreň<br />
Nováky, and mining industry –<br />
Hornonitrianske bane.<br />
At present, Nováky is a<br />
small, but attractive and clean,<br />
and absolutely native-Slovak<br />
town with approximately<br />
fi ve thousand inhabitants.<br />

There are a few athletic clubs<br />
in Nováky which have made<br />
considerable achievements in<br />
Slovakia, especially in waterpolo<br />
and canoe. The waterpolo<br />
players´ team is the<br />
multi-champion of Slovakia.<br />
The canoeists have achieved<br />
considerable results at the<br />
European and world level.<br />
The citizens and tourists can<br />
spend their free time visiting<br />
armoured trains<br />
built in the Zvolen<br />
railway works during<br />
the Slovak National<br />
Uprising as a symbol<br />
of the resistance<br />
of Slovak nation<br />
against fascism.<br />
In town there is<br />
the J. G. Tajovský<br />
Theatre, Museum of Forestry<br />
and Wood processing, and the<br />
Technical University which<br />
trains specialists of forestry<br />
and wood processing. The<br />
municipal swimming bath,<br />
the Neresnica swimming bath,<br />
and the spas of Kováčova and<br />
Sliač off er recreation opportunities<br />
in summer. In winter,<br />
SNP Square<br />
the swimming hall, the National<br />
Water Polo Centre, sports<br />
facilities, the town park, or<br />
fi shing and rowing on the lake<br />
or visiting a cultural programme<br />
in the cultural centre.<br />
