Košice belongs to the cities of rich and famous history. The fi rst written reference about Košice dates back eight hundred years ago. Its rich history was to a great extent infl uenced by the fact that Košice in its past was an important crossroad of trade routes. In 1290 the city gained various privileges and the right to protect the city by fortifi ed walls. In 1369, King Ludovicus the Great granted to Košice a coat of arms which is a modifi cation of the royal symbol of the Anjou family. It is the oldest armorial warrant of the city in the whole Europe. In the mid 15th century the city obtained a privilege that raised its status to one of the leading cities in the Hungarian Empire. In the 14th and 15th centuries Košice experienced a boom in craft and trade with metal, fur and other goods. In 1657 the Košice University was founded which later in 1777 changed to a Royal Academy with a printing press center. In the 19the century several manufactures which later turned to factories were established. In the second half of this century the city belonged to those that had most developed industry in Hungary. In the period between the wars the city changed to an industrial, garrison, and administrative center. The powerful post-war development of the city was clearly activated in 1960’s when a mammoth metallurgical complex of Eastern Slovakian Ironworks /nowadays US Steel Co./ was built. It stimulated a massive migration to Košice from the whole of former Czechoslovakia. As a result, the city expanded in the number of inhabitants as well as in its area. SELF-GOVERNMENT - CITIES AND TOWNS SAMOSPRÁVA - MESTÁ A OBCE Nitra – the Mother of Slovak Towns Nitra has the longest of history of all Slovak towns. Thanks to its strategic location in the valley of the River Nitra, it was settled already in prehistoric ages. The fi rst written mention about Nitra dates back to 828; the town is described as the place of consecration of the fi rst Christian church in Slovakia. During the Great Moravian period, it had one of the largest urban concentration areas in Europe. The oldest Slavic episcopacy and the oldest monasterial school were established there. The town held its important position also in the times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Over time, Nitra became the crossroad of trade routes, cultures and ethnic groups. Today’s Nitra is a wellknown exhibition and agricultural centre, and the seat of important institutions and universities. The exquisite theatre performances and cultural and social events attract many visitors to the town each year. The construction of industrial parks North and South off ers many new investment opportunities and ranks Nitra among the modern industrial centres of Slovakia. The town is dynamically developing also thanks to the construction of a new town district with complex infrastructure. With the completion of the Southern by-pass road of the expressway R1, the places with excellent traffi c accessibility will become even more favourable logistic complexes.
