TOWN HLOHOVEC
Hlohovec
is economic,
cultural and
administrative
centre of the
region. It is
situated in Western Slovakia,
it is a part of Trnava Self-
Governing Region. The
distance from the capital city of
the Slovak Republic Bratislava
is 60km. Inhabitants of
Hlohovec is around 23 000, it is
31st largest town in Slovakia.
The area of the town was
already inhabited in the earlier
Stone Age, more signifi cantly
in the Bronze Age, and there
are also traces of the Celts.
The fi rst written evidence
of its existence dates back
to 1113 – the castle and
the hamlet called Golguz
are mentioned in the socalled
Zobor Document. In
1362 Hlohovec obtained
town privileges. During the
feudalism, Hlohovec was the
centre of trade, developed
crafts, and the town was
famous for its markets and
fairs.
The history of the town is
tied with members of strong
feudal families of Hungary
and Slovakia that infl uenced
the development of the town.
The Konts, the Thurzos, the

Forgáchs and the last
owners of the castle,
the Erdődys, belonged
to the most important
families of Hlohovec.
The most signifi cant
architectural sights
include a Renaissance-
Baroque castle
surrounded by a large
castle park with French
terraces , the Empire
theatre built in 1802,
the Church of St.
Michael Archangel,
the Chapel of St. Anna,
the Church of St. Spirit
from 14th century
and the Franciscan
monastery with the
Church of All Saints.
Agriculture, mainly
viticulture, and also
industry started to
develop in the town
in the second half of
19th century.
Tradition of
pharmaceutical
production in the
town is developed
by the company
ZENTIVA a. s., the
company BEKAERT
a. s. is focused
on production of
steel cords. The
companies like
FAURECIA s. r. o.
producing automotive
components, VETTER
s. r. o. focused on
packaging dried fruit,
JMT SK s. r. o. that
produces electrotechnical
components,
and TRANSKAM-
SLOVAKIA, spol. s r.
o. have established
themselves in a newly
built industrial park.
Diff erent cultural
activities are developed
in the town, the
Museum of National
History and Geography
and the Observatory
and Planetarium have
a regional character.
Beside pre-school
facilities and elementary
schools, there are also three
secondary schools and three
apprentice schools.
The town develops peer
activities with its twin
Belgian town De Panne, the
Czech town Hranice, and the
Slovenian town Slovinské
Konjice.
