TOWN HLOHOVEC<br />
Hlohovec<br />
is economic,<br />
cultural and<br />
administrative<br />
centre of the<br />
region. It is<br />
situated in Western Slovakia,<br />
it is a part of Trnava Self-<br />
Governing Region. The<br />
distance from the capital city of<br />
the Slovak Republic Bratislava<br />
is 60km. Inhabitants of<br />
Hlohovec is around 23 000, it is<br />
31st largest town in Slovakia.<br />
The area of the town was<br />
already inhabited in the earlier<br />
Stone Age, more signifi cantly<br />
in the Bronze Age, and there<br />
are also traces of the Celts.<br />
The fi rst written evidence<br />
of its existence dates back<br />
to 1113 – the castle and<br />
the hamlet called Golguz<br />
are mentioned in the socalled<br />
Zobor Document. In<br />
1362 Hlohovec obtained<br />
town privileges. During the<br />
feudalism, Hlohovec was the<br />
centre of trade, developed<br />
crafts, and the town was<br />
famous for its markets and<br />
fairs.<br />
The history of the town is<br />
tied with members of strong<br />
feudal families of Hungary<br />
and Slovakia that infl uenced<br />
the development of the town.<br />
The Konts, the Thurzos, the<br />

Forgáchs and the last<br />
owners of the castle,<br />
the Erdődys, belonged<br />
to the most important<br />
families of Hlohovec.<br />
The most signifi cant<br />
architectural sights<br />
include a Renaissance-<br />
Baroque castle<br />
surrounded by a large<br />
castle park with French<br />
terraces , the Empire<br />
theatre built in 1802,<br />
the Church of St.<br />
Michael Archangel,<br />
the Chapel of St. Anna,<br />
the Church of St. Spirit<br />
from 14th century<br />
and the Franciscan<br />
monastery with the<br />
Church of All Saints.<br />
Agriculture, mainly<br />
viticulture, and also<br />
industry started to<br />
develop in the town<br />
in the second half of<br />
19th century.<br />
Tradition of<br />
pharmaceutical<br />
production in the<br />
town is developed<br />
by the company<br />
ZENTIVA a. s., the<br />
company BEKAERT<br />
a. s. is focused<br />
on production of<br />
steel cords. The<br />
companies like<br />
FAURECIA s. r. o.<br />
producing automotive<br />
components, VETTER<br />
s. r. o. focused on<br />
packaging dried fruit,<br />
JMT SK s. r. o. that<br />
produces electrotechnical<br />
components,<br />
and TRANSKAM-<br />
SLOVAKIA, spol. s r.<br />
o. have established<br />
themselves in a newly<br />
built industrial park.<br />
Diff erent cultural<br />
activities are developed<br />
in the town, the<br />
Museum of National<br />
History and Geography<br />
and the Observatory<br />
and Planetarium have<br />
a regional character.<br />
Beside pre-school<br />
facilities and elementary<br />
schools, there are also three<br />
secondary schools and three<br />
apprentice schools.<br />
The town develops peer<br />
activities with its twin<br />
Belgian town De Panne, the<br />
Czech town Hranice, and the<br />
Slovenian town Slovinské<br />
Konjice.<br />
