16 Banská Bystrica The Pearl of the Hron Region, the City under Urpín, the City of the Family – these traditional and modern characteristics associated with Banská Bystrica will be extended by a new one this year. In 2010, Banská Bystrica will celebrate its 755th birthday. The history of Banská Bystrica dates back to the 13th century. Thanks to the families of Saxon colonists, the original Bystrica settlement grew into an economic, administrative and craft base of mining production. The importance of the settlement in this region increased to such extent that King Belo IV granted it the status of the town in 1255. The key milestone of the almost eight-hundred year long history of Banská Bystrica was the establishment of the Thurzo-Fugger Company, which introduced modern methods of copper mining and processing. The inhabitants of the town were directly governed by the ruler. The royal charter granted various privileges to them – the right of free mining of precious metals, or exemption from taxes, tolls and other fees. The early capitalist copper company largely supported by the Fugger capital became SELF-GOVERNMENT - CITIES AND TOWNS SAMOSPRÁVA - MESTÁ A OBCE one of the most important and progressive mining companies in Europe at that period. The copper and silver of Banská Bystrica were exported to Antwerp, Nuremberg and Venice, The historical centre of the city and from there to all over the world. Banská Bystrica became known as the copper capital of Europe and earned the attribute the “Copper Bystrica”. Another important, yet painful milestone in the life of the city was World War II and the Slovak National Uprising with Banská Bystrica at its centre. Throughout the centuries, Banská Bystrica became a social, administrative, cultural and education centre. In the city of eighty-thousand inhabitants there are several universities, attended by Barbakan - the area of the castle approximately twentythousand students. The city surroundings is rich in mineral springs, and provides suitable conditions for summer and winter tourism, sports and recreation. After many years of victories and falls, it meets the proverbial vision: “In Bystrica while alive, in heaven after death.” When remembering his childhood years, the worldknown architect I. M. Pei used to say that the very fi rst construction that had attracted his interest in architecture was the Park Hotel building in Shanghai. This hotel was completed in 1934 and became the tallest building of the Far East. It was designed by Ladislav Hudec. The native of Banská Bystrica Ladislav Eduard Hudec was born on 08 January 1893 in the former Hungarian Empire. In 1910, he began studying at the Faculty of Architecture of the Hungarian Royal Technical University, which he completed in 1914. In the same year, Ladislav Hudec was recruited to army, and in June 1916 he was taken captive and interned in the prison camp in the Western Siberian town Khabarovsk. In November 1918, he managed to escape from the camp and got to Shanghai through Harbin, where he began working for the transoceanic company Kerry. From the position of drawer, later business manager Ladislav Hudec rose to become senior architect and partner. The main works of this important architect of the 20th century’s interwar period can be found in Shanghai. He designed around sixty structures in the period between 1918 and 1947. Most of his buildings are preserved even today, and one third of them were included in the list of protected historic monuments of the city of Shanghai. In 1947, the famous native of Banská Bystrica moved to Italy and shortly after to the United States of America, where he died in Berkeley, California on 26 October 1958. According to his last will, his remains were buried in the family tomb at the cemetery of Banská Bystrica. A tribute should be paid to him at every place where he lived, created and worked. Dunajská Streda Dunajská Streda is a city in Southern Slovakia, located in Podunajská nížina (Danubian Lowland). It is part of the regional government in Trnava. Dunajská Streda is the heart of Žitný Ostrov (Rye Island), within the triangle formed by three important cities: Bratislava, Vienna and Győr. It has about 25,000 inhabitants and is an urban center for about 100,000 citizens of the of Žitný Ostrov region. History: The city of Dunajská Streda grew from a settlement in the middle of Žitný Ostrov. The teritory was inhabited as early as the Bronze Age, but there is historical evidence of the Roman Empire, as well as the Migration Period. The city has a 950-year history as a market town. Since 1405, it has been a SELF-GOVERNMENT - CITIES AND TOWNS SAMOSPRÁVA - MESTÁ A OBCE feudal town. The modern city of Dunajská Streda was, according to the city chronicle, founded in 1874 by a merger of independent settlements Újfalu, Nemesszeg, Előtejed and Szerdahely. Basic information: Area: 48 km 2 Population: 22,989 Thermal baths: The thermal spa in Dunajská Streda is among the most popular and most visited spas in the region. It off ers healing mineral waters, a park, a small lake, swimming pools, a restaurant, several food stands, a bed and breakfast, and camping facilities. The thermal water comes from 1,600 meters deep and on surface reaches 57 °C It is suited not only for swimming, but also has healing properties for locomotor and joint diseases. The spa facilities, on 26 hectars, consist of six pools with water temperatures between 24 °C and 38 °C. Sights: The beautiful Vámbéry Square is dominated by the Gothic Roman Catholic church from the 14th Century. Renovated several times in the past, the interior is now in a Baroque style. The Protestant church on Hlavná ulica (Main Street) is from 1883. A synagogue once stood on this street and it was the biggest temple in Žitný Ostrov. Unfortunately, the building was bombed in 1945 and its ruins were taken away. According to historical documents, a religious school was functioning in Dunajská Streda as early as the mid-17th Century and the fi rst 8-year secondary school opened in 1938. There are other valuable buildings that showcase to the visitor Dunajská Streda’s rich history. One of the most prominent ones is the Yellow Castle, a Baroque building, built by the city’s well-known citizen and advocate, bishop Mikuláš Kondé, in 1770. The castle now hosts the Museum of Žitný Ostrov. Another beautiful building is Villa Vermes. Well known personalities from Dunajská Streda: Ármín Vámbéry, the famous scholar of the Orient, who lived in the second half of the 19th Century, was a citizen of our town. He was an author of several travel books about the Near East.
