is 73,800 ha. Almost fi ve million
of tourists visit the park
each year. The hiking trails
network is approximately 600
km long. Together with the
Polish national park, the Tatras
have been listed as a UNESCO
biosphere reservation. There
are more than 170 mountain
tarns in the High Tatras formed
in glacial kettles.
Master Paul’s Altar
The most important and a
very unique monument of the
town of Levoča is the Church
of St. Jacob with eleven Gothic
and Renaissance winged
altars, including the tallest
Gothic altar in the world.
The unique late-Gothic altar
of Virgin Mary and St. Jacob
the Apostle, the tallest in the
world, was made in the workshop
of Master Paul from Le-
voča in 1507-1518. It is made
of basswood and is 18.6 m tall
and 6.2 wide. The altar wings
are decorated with relieves on
one side and panel paintings
on the other. The altar retable
shelters monumental statutes:
the Holy Virgin with child, St.
Jacob the Older, and St. John
the Apostle.
A complex of wooden
churches
The wooden religious
buildings of North-East Slovakia
include the churches of
Eastern ordinance (“cerkvy”)
and Western ordinance, and
are situated in the districts of
Bardejov, Humenné, Prešov,
Snina, Stará Ľubovňa and
Svidník. There are 26 wooden
churches in total within the
territory of the region. In
2008, a selection committee
included the Roman-Catholic
Church of St. Francis of Assisi
in Hervartov (1500), the Evangelical
Articulate Church in
Kežmarok (1717), the Greek-
Catholic Church of St. Nicholas
in Bodružal (1658), and the
Greek-Catholic Church of
St. Michael the Archangel
in Ladomírová (1742) in the
UNESCO list.
The Pieniny National Park
The area of the national
park is 3,750 ha. Even though
the Pieniny mountains are
not big in dimension, the 35
km long mountain range is
one of the most beautiful
and precious natural areas in
Central Europe. The rafting on
wooden rafts down the Dunajec
river canyon is a unique
attraction that one cannot
experience anywhere else.
Nineteen specially protected
nature areas in total were
proclaimed within the PIENAP
territory.
Levoča
Levoča is an urban historical
reservation. Thanks to
the number of monuments
and artistic jewels it is one of
the most beautiful historic
towns in Slovakia. The main
square retained its medieval
rectangular form (3:1) and is
one of the largest squares of
this type in Europe. Together
with the preserved Renaissance
houses it shows evidence
of the wealth of the town in
the Middle Ages. The town is
surrounded by a monumental
fortifi cation system. It is almost
fully preserved: six of the
15 bastions and towers still
exist, including three entrance
gates: the Košice Gate, the
Polish Gate and the Menhard
Gate. From the 16th century
up to 1922, Levoča was the
capital of the Spiš District. In
1806-1826, Anton Povolný, an
architect from Eger, built an
imposing offi ce building – the
Great District House, considered
as the most beautiful district
house in former Hungary.
