castles, mansions and ruins.<br />
That is why the Trenčín region<br />
is usually called “The region<br />
of castles and legends”. The<br />
most famous castles are the<br />
Trenčín castle, the Beckov<br />
castle, the Čachtice castle and<br />
the Bojnice castle which is the<br />
most visited romantic castle<br />
in Slovakia.<br />
There are 32 museums<br />
operating in the region of<br />
Trenčín. They form a network<br />
of institutions which ensure<br />
the protection of the cultural<br />
heritage and its presentation<br />
to the public. They hide<br />
precious collections and<br />
documents and they are<br />
popular destinations for the<br />
visitors of our region.<br />
The town of Trenčín,<br />
one of the oldest cities<br />
in Slovakia, is a seat of the<br />
region. It stretches on both<br />
banks of the river Váh. The<br />
charm of the town consists<br />
of unique partially preserved<br />
fortifi cations that create<br />
collection of medieval town<br />
architecture on the central<br />
square, baroque church of St.<br />
Francis Xaverius, Parish church<br />
of the Birth of Virgin Mary<br />
with carner located under the<br />
monumental Trenčín Castle.<br />
A well-known monument<br />
of the Trenčín region is the<br />
memorial to the general<br />
M. R. Štefánik on the Bradlo<br />
hill in the town Brezová pod<br />
Bradlom. This native is a<br />
prestigious personage of the<br />
Europe. In history he enrolled<br />
as a scientist, an astronomer,<br />
a photographer, a pilot,<br />

great diplomat, a defender of<br />
the rights of the Slovak nation<br />
and one of the founders<br />
of the Czechoslovak state<br />
in 1919. This year we celebrate<br />
the 130th anniversary of<br />
his birth. On 21st July 2009<br />
the Štefánik’s tomb on the<br />

Bradlo hill was placed on<br />
the list of European cultural<br />
heritage. The monument<br />
is located in the region of<br />
isolated settlements nearby<br />
Bradlo, Košariská, Brezová pod<br />
Bradlom and Myjava. This area<br />
is one of the most popular<br />
in our region because of its<br />
natural conditions, folk culture<br />
and folklore traditions.<br />
In the heart of the region<br />
there is a small village<br />
Vršatec Cliff<br />
called Uhrovec, where a<br />
famous house can be found.<br />
Coincidentally, this house is<br />
the birthplace of two great<br />
personalities of Slovak history.<br />
There was born Ľudovít Štúr,<br />
a politician and a philologist,<br />
a codifi er of the Slovak<br />
language, and a politician<br />

Alexander Dubček was born<br />
there, too.<br />
Another inducement for<br />
the visitors of our region is<br />
also great cultural festivals of<br />
folk art, modern music and<br />
fi lm, historical celebrations<br />
at the castles and riding<br />
competitions.<br />

cultural and accommodation<br />
facilities off er comfort,<br />
refreshment, relax and<br />
entertainment in the Trenčín<br />
region.<br />
The Trenčín region<br />
is situated on the main<br />
development axis. Transport<br />
and technical infrastructure<br />
corridors of multi-regional<br />
importance and highway D1<br />
traverse the region. There are<br />
public international airports<br />
in Prievidza and Slávnica. Both<br />
airports provide sightseeing<br />
and sport fl ights.<br />
