its history. There are plenty
of historical monuments,
castles, mansions and ruins.
That is why the Trenčín region
is usually called “The region
of castles and legends”. The
most famous castles are the
Trenčín castle, the Beckov
castle, the Čachtice castle and
the Bojnice castle which is the
most visited romantic castle
in Slovakia.
There are 32 museums
operating in the region of
Trenčín. They form a network
of institutions which ensure
the protection of the cultural
heritage and its presentation
to the public. They hide
precious collections and
documents and they are
popular destinations for the
visitors of our region.
The town of Trenčín,
one of the oldest cities
in Slovakia, is a seat of the
region. It stretches on both
banks of the river Váh. The
charm of the town consists
of unique partially preserved
fortifi cations that create
collection of medieval town
architecture on the central
square, baroque church of St.
Francis Xaverius, Parish church
of the Birth of Virgin Mary
with carner located under the
monumental Trenčín Castle.
A well-known monument
of the Trenčín region is the
memorial to the general
M. R. Štefánik on the Bradlo
hill in the town Brezová pod
Bradlom. This native is a
prestigious personage of the
Europe. In history he enrolled
as a scientist, an astronomer,
a photographer, a pilot,

a general of the French army, a
great diplomat, a defender of
the rights of the Slovak nation
and one of the founders
of the Czechoslovak state
in 1919. This year we celebrate
the 130th anniversary of
his birth. On 21st July 2009

Bradlo hill was placed on
the list of European cultural
heritage. The monument
is located in the region of
isolated settlements nearby
Bradlo, Košariská, Brezová pod
Bradlom and Myjava. This area
is one of the most popular
in our region because of its
natural conditions, folk culture
and folklore traditions.
In the heart of the region
there is a small village
Vršatec Cliff
called Uhrovec, where a
famous house can be found.
Coincidentally, this house is
the birthplace of two great
personalities of Slovak history.
There was born Ľudovít Štúr,
a politician and a philologist,
a codifi er of the Slovak
language, and a politician

Alexander Dubček was born
there, too.
Another inducement for
the visitors of our region is
also great cultural festivals of
folk art, modern music and
fi lm, historical celebrations
at the castles and riding
competitions.
A lot of gastronomic,
cultural and accommodation
facilities off er comfort,
refreshment, relax and
entertainment in the Trenčín
region.
The Trenčín region
is situated on the main
development axis. Transport
and technical infrastructure
corridors of multi-regional
importance and highway D1
traverse the region. There are
public international airports
in Prievidza and Slávnica. Both
airports provide sightseeing
and sport fl ights.
