LAST EDITION’S ENGLISH CHALLENGE:
JAMIE SPADINA won a $20 Music Card for bringing
the correct workings to Ms Carl in Student Reception
to our last English challenge. The answer was: Quilt.
His rationale for the following picture was: “I chose to
draw a picture of a quilt because it starts with “q” and
I put a rabbit on the quilt so the next picture can have
something on there that relates to it.”
Jamie’s artwork was exceptional!
Jamie Spadina received the prize – a $20 music
download card. Congratulations
THIS EDITION’S ENGLISH CHALLENGE:
Both answers must be correct to claim the prize.
Which of the following objects is least like the
others?
Poem
Novel
Painting
Statue
Flower
What is the word coiled
inside this circle?
“Be the best. It’s the only market that’s not crowded.”
LAST EDITION’S MATH PROBLEM:
This one had quite a few stumped.
MATHS CHALLENGE
Numbers can be placed in
the grid shown below into
each of the smaller squares
so that the product of all
three numbers in any row,
column, or diagonal is the
same positive number.
Find the sum of x and y.
Nicholas Johannesen sent
through his workings shown above and his correct answer
to the question being 514.
Well done Nic ‐ enjoy your $20 music download card!
THIS EDITION’S MATHS CHALLENGE:
Please submit your answer with the workings and what
Theorem you used to help solve the problem.
A warm welcome to Anias Bechir who will be on campus with us for the following 10 weeks.
YEAR 8 MATHS ENRICHMENT DAY
In Week 3 of next term, 20 of our best Year 8 mathema ticians will be
selected to pa rticipate in a Maths Enrichment Day, run by Mr Brian
Garnett ‐ B.Sci/Dip. Ed (UNSW), Post‐Grad Dip. Sc.Ed. (Maths) (Curtin
Uni.). Mr Garnett has been organising these enrichment days for
students on the Sunshine Coast, and in the Brisbane area, for some
years and is very excited about offering this opportunity to students at
Riverside.
This day will provide students, who have demonstrated mathematical
ability, with further opportunity to become engaged and active in
higher levels of mathematical thinking. It is designed to encourage
these students to think creatively, develop cooperative learning skills
and understand that Mathematics can be intellectually entertaining.
Maths Enrichment Day will be held on Tuesday, 17 July from
9:30am‐1:30pm, at Riverside. Specific information about the day will
be sent home with selected students soon.
Building a Digestive System
During much of this term the Year 8’s
have been studying the amazing
design of the human body. As part of
an assignment they were asked to
build a model of the digestive system,
using items from home that best
demonstra ted the function of the
various parts. For example, many
students used a pa ir tongs to
represent the mouth, as tongs can be
used to hold food or break off bits of
food, as the mouth does. The Year 8
students produced many excellent
models and were extremely inventive
in deciding which items they would
use for their model. Some examples
included: a pepper grinder for a
mouth as they both grind food;
various detergents to represent the
liver as they both have a cleaning
function and a range of bottle lids to
represent the anus as they both open
and close. The students are to be
congratulated on the effort they put
into these projects and the interesting
way in which they demonstrated their
learning.
Both Josiah Nehow and Ayden Shehab‐Ash
recently earned their place as student leaders
and were presented with their badges at an all
College assembly. Congratulations
Clock making
During this Term, Year 8 students have been designing
and creating their own clocks. Students have expanded
their skills using the copping saws, belt sander and the
wood burner. They are now using these skills to design
and creat e t heir own chocolate moulds.
Year 6/7 CAMP
Term 3 Week 2 Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday!
Year 6/7 Camp is fast approaching and the
students are getting excited. Camps are a
compulsory activity in the College as they
promote team skills, leadership skills, initia tive,
organisation and friendships. So if you have not
yet replied with your intentions for camp you
must do so to the office a.s.a.p.
Normal school activ ities will not run on those
days so if your child is unable to attend camp
for a valid reason then you are required to ad‐
vise the College in writing and find alternative
arrangements for those 3 days.
This year the students are heading off to
Maranatha Recrea tion Camp which is located on
the Sunshine Coas t. Established in the 1930s,
Maranatha has earned a reputation as one of
the finest re creational camps in Queensland.
The Camp has a large range of adventure based
activities run by professionally trained
facilitators, and plenty of extra facilities on site
to keep any group entertained at all times.
Some of the activities tha t your child will be
participating in are abseiling, mid ropes course,
tower of tremble, initiative games, river rafting
and more!!!! Notes giving details of the camp
and equipment list will be going home in the last
week of term.
SENIOR COLLEGE News
"A Transit of a planet occurs when the planet passes directly
between the Earth and the Sun so that as seen from the Earth, the
planet appears to pass across the face of the Sun. Transits can
only occur with planets whose orbit is between that of the Earth
and the Sun; that is, Mercury and Venus. A transit of a planet is
similar to a solar eclipse but the planet appears to be much smaller
than the Moon so it cannot cover the Sun and looks like a small
black disc slowly crossing the Sun.
Transits of Venus occur in a pattern that repeats every 243 years
with pairs of transits eight years apart separated by gaps of 121.5
years and 105.5 years. Venus and the Earth are aligned in the
same direction out from the Sun about every 584 days (this is
called in conjunction), however a transit does not occur each
time because Venus’s orbit is usually above or below the Sun in
the sky.
Since the phenomena was first recognised there have only been
six transits of Venus – 1639, 1761, 1769, 1874, 1882 and the most
recent one in 2004. The 6 June 2012 transit is our last
opportunity to observe a transit of Venus, as the next event occurs
on 11 December 2117.
The transit of Venus is an astronomically significant event. By
observing and accurately measuring the transit of Venus across
the face of the sun astronomers have been able to accurately
determine the distance between Earth and the sun. It is this
measurement that allows us to know accurately about the size of
our sol ar system.
An action packed Term with
fantastic performances from our
Senior students. Dance students
showcased their skills at a Dance
Show and the Rock band performed
at an all College assembly wowing
the crowds with their expertise.
We were blessed with an awesome day to
view the transit and all our students were
able to observe the transit at every stage.
It was a great experience and one that
many of us will remember for years to
come. Many thanks to all the people who
helped to set up the viewing apparatus and
in recording the event.
News from the CHAPLAIN
Rap from the Chap Explaining Faith and Christianity
So what’s the big deal? What’s the real story about God and Us and STUFF?
Well……
Firstly, Adam and Eve blew it severely a long time ago when they tried to play ‘God’.
Bad move for us. We weren’t designed to play God, and have been suffering ever since
with wars, natural disasters, family hassles, pollution, crime and sickness. What’s more,
God’s law said that people had to pay the penalty for turning against Him. The penalty is
DEATH. Death means being away from God, and everything good, for ever!
BUT, even though we gave up on God, God did not give up on us! In fact God had a
rescue mission planned to get us back on side with him. It started when God created the
whole universe and it was completed when He sent His son, Jesus.
Jesus’ Mission was to come and die for us!
I will look at the Mission of Jesus next time.
BASKETBALL RESULTS
This season we have had some mixed results
with our teams featuring in the semi finals but
unfortunately being unable to make it to the
finals. With the introduction of training on
Thursday afternoons we have been able to show
vast improvement but more hard work needs to
be done for the remainder of the year.
I am very proud of all the players as they have
represented the College in a positive manner
and have demonstrated good sportsmanship.
Thanks to all the parents for their support and I
Last week Miss Marshall took our young string players to a
workshop at the Brolga, reports are that they all had a great
time and learnt a lot. There will be more workshops next
term.
Mr Kyle Downes, our piano tutor and choir accompanist, will
unfortunately be leaving us at the end of term and I wish him
well in his future endeavours. Mrs. Lynn van Huyssteen will be
working with junior and beginner piano students whilst
Mr Ken Martindale will be working with the older and more
experienced students. He will also be accompanying the choir.
Next week sees the performance of the College musical,
which is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of
the Shrew’, adapted by our own Mrs Slater.
Next Term is the eisteddfod. If your child is in an ensemble or
performing as a soloist please ensure they practice at least
ten minutes per day. You will be surprised how far they will
advance with this regular practice.
A reminder that if you are considering instrumental lessons
Attention Parents and Friends
Each Monday 9:00—9:30am you are invited to join
a prayer group held at “The Shed” Wesleyan
Methodist Church.
Praying for our children, each other’s children,
teachers, other staff and for the College.
(Small children welcome)
Chewing gum is NOT permitted
on the College grounds.
This year we have students and staff who suffer from
allergies and they must be very careful not to come into
contact with certain foods. Therefore we request that where
possible, the following foods: Eggs, Peanuts and Seafood
be avoided at the College.
We value the well-being of each one in
our Riverside community, let’s make the
College a safe place for all.
Thank you!
This activity is open to students from Years 6 to 12
who want to use the time to work independently on
homework or assignments, and students who would
like some teacher assistance with their work. Please
support us by checking with your child/children
whether they have work to do and if they don't, make
the usual arrangements for them to go home at 3pm.
If all parents could remove their vehicles by this time or
park in Royle S treet, tha t would be appreciated very much
by the Preppies.
The Preps are going to be using the
carpark each day to ride their trikes
As you can imag ine they are very
excited to be able to use this space.
WASTE MANAGEMENT AT RIVERSIDE
Riverside students are asked to put their rubbish in
different bins in order for the College to better
manage our waste. 3 bins are available in eating
areas ‐ yellow top recycle bins (like the ones at home),
red top bins for garbage that can't be reused or
recycled, and small green top bins for food waste that
can be composted. Our aim is to
decrease our 'landfill' rubbish by 1/3, simply by
recycling and composting.
Please encourage your child/ren to put their
rubbish in the correct bins.
