Welcome to the latest edition of ‘at your leisure’, can I
just say that everyone who has contributed to this owner
magazine has yet again done an amazing job, I am sure you
will all find it an excellent read.
I am delighted to announce that we currently have various major planning applications in place which
will see Park Leisure place a £1,000,000 development at the Granary Bar and Restaurant at our
Amble Links park in Northumberland. As well as this we have launched our newest park, Oyster Bay
Coastal and Country Retreat, which we had an incredible response over the bank holiday weekend,
with 8 pitches reserved so far. Other investments are forthcoming for all parks and further details
are explained within your park pages.
We have also seen the launch of the ‘Love your Holiday
Park’ campaign be a great success, with many owners taking
advantage and earning themselves and their friends £500.
If you are interested in referring a friend or family member
please get in touch with your park team who will be happy to
help.
You will have by now received your annual customer feedback forms, if you could find
the time to complete this with your honest feedback and return to us as soon as possible we would be extremely
grateful. This information is vital to our development of all parks and for your future enjoyment with Park Leisure. We develop our
parks based on the information we receive from our holiday home owners, so we rely on you to be as honest as possible. If there is
something you would like to see improved please let us know.

GREAT NEWs ON THE
vAT TURNAROUND
Great news for the holiday home industry was
announced in May as the Government declared they
were scrapping the planned 20% vAT levy on buying a
caravan holiday home, and reduced the rate massively
down to just 5%.
At Park Leisure we just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who signed the petition,
you really made a difference, not just by the government backing down slightly but to the
thousands of workers and other current and potential owners of caravan holiday homes. The
intended increase would have most definitely hit the holiday home industry hard and as a result
put many manufacturers out of work, so we are delighted with this outcome!
Even better news; at Park Leisure we plan on freezing our prices when the 5% rise comes into
action in 2013, meaning our owners will see no trace of the price hike. Again, we thank you for
your support and look forward to a great future, allowing you and many more families to enjoy all
our parks have to offer.

WEDDING
Head Office’s Charlie Townsend got married back in June, her mum
Mary tells us about their celebrations:
“My daughter Charlie and her new husband Rob started their
wedding celebrations with a wonderful ceremony in York back in
June. Despite weeks of torrential rain the weather held out.
We were joined in the festivities by many of the head
office team, helping the newlyweds celebrate their new life
together, partying late into the night. We then packed up our
bags to continue the celebrations in Mexico for a blessing on
the beach. It was the most beautiful and relaxing setting, with
everyone involved having a great time, helped merrily along by
the delicious local tequila!
Charlie, Rob and little Herbie had a fantastic time and are
looking forward to spending their lives together.”

owners are very lucky wherever they have a holiday park!

pARK lEIsURE CHARITy WORK
At park leisure we’re very proud of our charity achievements and would like
to firstly say a huge ‘Thank you’ and ‘Well Done’ to everyone’s efforts in helping
us raise over £12,000 so far for our chosen charities: Cash for Kids and Cancer
research UK. Over the past few months all parks have been busy holding events
and activities to help us reach this significant amount, especially over the Queen’s
Diamond jubilee weekend, so a big well done again to everyone involved - this is
a fantastic achievement which both charities will greatly appreciate.

Back in July Directors Gary and Miles were joined by Grant and
James to kick off Park Leisure’s efforts to raise £20,000 by
attempting their most extreme test to date: cycling between the
Three Peaks and climbing them all in just six days!
They braved the elements, overcame accidents, battled through all
types of weather and pushed their bodies to the limits – but this
was all worth it for the breathtakingly beautiful views and feeling of
accomplishment when they reached and conquered each mountain.
The whole experience was an unforgettable one for the guys.
The guys have been blown away by everyone who sponsored them
and their generosity, helping us to surpass the half-way target.
And there’s still opportunity to help raise even more for cash

and would make such a difference to both charities.
FUN TIMEs AND
FUNDRAIsING
AT THE CRAZy BEAR
On 11th August Heather View was packed
out with owners and their families, alongside
Kenny D, the Metro Radio crew and the
Cash for Kids girls, who enjoyed a big
fundraising Fun Day organised by the Crazy
Bear Manager, Carl.
They were joined by children’s characters
Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Dora
the Explorer for a day of family-friendly
activities that included face painting,
dog show, limbo competition, and an owners only raffle with some brilliant
prizes on offer. Attendees where also treated to a spectacular performance from dance troop
California Girls. All of which helped Carl to raise £697,
The fun didn’t stop there though – a night-time auction helped raise a further £600 thanks
to an electric car and tickets to Disney Mickey’s Magic Show at the Metro Arena being
auctioned off. On behalf of the Crazy Bear team, who did a fantastic job organising the
whole event, we’d like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to everyone who helped out on the day
and donated great prizes, with a special mention to: Pink Ink Entertainment, Andrew James
Worldwide, the Cash for Kids girls and Metro Radio.
It was a great day, everyone really enjoyed themselves and their generosity resulted in a
massive £1,300 being raised.

We’re not stopping there with our charity efforts: we aim to raise another £8,000 to reach our
£20,000 target by the end of this year, There are plenty of other fun things coming up in the

The Great Chantry Bake Off
Back for its 3rd year the Great Chantry Bake Off returns to
continue raising money for our nominated charities.
Enjoyed by all who attend and well supported by owners,
it’ll take place on Saturday 22nd September from
10am and there are two categories: 1) Savory and 2)
Sweet so whichever category your dish comes under
– get baking!
For only £1 to enter there’ll be refreshments as
well as sampling and judging will take place in the
cottage: a 1st place and Runner-Up will be awarded
after voting in each category. Last year’s event was
won by Mrs Compton’s Great Scones & Mr Kemp’s
Luscious Lemon Cake - we hope to see them both
defending their crown!
There will be plenty more activities and events coming up
across all parks but if you have any fundraising ideas you’d
like to see happening on park, please let us know!

pARK MANAGERs UpDATE
With the end of the summer season looming we hope you all
managed to get the best from your holiday homes despite the
poor weather.
We have again been busy on the park adding the finishing touches to the Lake View development and leisure
facilities, as well as new bark to the parks many flower and shrub beds, thank you for bearing with us during the
last few months.
I would like to personally thank all the owners who kindly donated, supported and followed us on our charity
Bike and Hike challenge during July. It was a real boost for us knowing how many of our owners were backing the
cause. It was probably the toughest 6 days I have ever experienced so many thanks again.
We would like to ensure the new pool and leisure facilities fit with all our owners needs, so should you have any
suggestions regarding opening times or new ideas we could look at implementing please let either myself or the
reception team know your thoughts.
There have been a few team changes at the park over the summer and we would like to wish all the new Par team
members a long and successful career with us here at the park.

NEWs IN BRIEF
CCTv
We have recently upgraded our park CCTV coverage; you will see some
warning signs up and around the park. This is nothing to be alarmed
about and has been put into place to help assist security at Par Sands .
BIKE RIDE
In our summer edition we told you about Mr Lainchbury raising money
for Children’s Hospice South West, well we are pleased to announce that
he made it, collecting over £2,000! Park Leisure donated £500 towards
his bike ride challenge and awarded Mr Lainchbury the cheque when he
popped into reception to tell us all about it.

FEsTIvAl
Mr Wroath from pitch EW11 is the President of the Lions Club of
Tavistock who organised a Jubilee Beer Festival as part of the town’s
celebration for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Par Sands sponsored a
guest beer called ‘Lizzies Dimples’ which went down a treat. It was a
great success, even though it was a bit damp they still sold lots of beer.

Here at par sands we closed our
swimming pool late last year ready
for a new refit costing in excess of
around £350,000
Back in May we re-opened the swimming pool which has proven to
be a huge success with holiday makers, owners and local residents
alike. In addition to the re-vamped swimming pool, we now have
much better changing rooms and seating area where you can
relax, enjoy a tea or coffee, access free Wi-Fi or watch the large TV
screens whilst friends and family use the swimming pool.

DOG sHOW
AT pAR sANDs
par Carnival Dog show took place here at par sands
on the 15th July, next door to the leisure complex. We
saw a mixture of all sorts of dogs enter throughout the
day ranging from labradors to Chihuahuas, all of which
were very well behaved.
There were prizes for Best Puppy, Most Handsome Dog, Prettiest Bitch, Best Condition Veteran,
Best Condition Under 15 inches, Best Condition Over 15 inches. Best Move, Best Pair ,Best Dog
with Child Handler. One of our owners Mrs. Russell from EW33 and her dog won 2nd place for
Best Overall Dog and 2nd place in Best Pair
Can we also take this opportunity to remind all owners to make sure their loveable pets are kept
on a lead while you are out and about on the park.
ON yOUR
DOORsTEp
For those of you who use the beach regularly you will have noticed that the old shelter
has gone that was opposite the reception office.
Substantial works have also been taking place on the part of the clay trail that runs
through the orchid meadow behind Eden Way. The old rotten boardwalk has been
removed and replaced with a more durable stone pathway that has been laid to link up
the east car park and then cuts back through into Eden Way.
Finally the eastern car park has been levelled and graded as part of the work over the last
few weeks.
All of the above work has been made possible
due to a grant from the Seaside Towns Bid, I
hope you all agree it has made a big difference.
Thanks to all those involved in securing the
funding especially Jan Philips, Friends of Par
Beach, Par Parish Council and Heidi Morgan to
name but a few.

Dog show write up by
stefan and sophie Russell
“It was a warm sunny day on the Sunday 15th
July where in Par Sands holiday park the Dog
Show was about to begin. Many dog owners
had brought their dogs to participate in
the event, there were many classes such as:
prettiest bitch, most handsome dog, best pair
and many others.
At the start of each class the judge would
come over and handle each dog then ask it to
be walked around the ring. They then judged
each dog and handed out the prizes.
We entered Douglas and Dougal in a few of
the classes and won 1st prize in the best pair
matched or unmatched class. At the end of the
show everyone who had won 1st price was to
come into the ring and the prize for the best
dog in the show and Dougal won best reserve
for the best dogs in the show.”

ANNOUNCEMENTs
Anniversary Celebration:
pauline & keith Bagley were regular
holidaymakers for several years before
they purchased their first holiday home
with us in 2007. In October this year they
will be celebrating their Golden Wedding
Anniversary.
They met on Christmas Eve at the
Swadlincote Rinx Dance Hall in 1959,
which was renowned for being one of the
best Dance Halls in the country!
They married in 1962 and went on to have
a daughter, Christine who also owns at Par
Sands! They have one granddaughter and
two grandsons and plan to celebrate their
Golden Wedding Anniversary in St Ives with
family.

Heligan, st Austell, Cornwall
‘The Big Draw’ is an inclusive celebration
of drawing that embraces 1,000 venues
and half a million people from across the
UK every October aiming to help widen the
country’s passion for drawing and expressing
their imagination and creativity. The theme
for this year’s in Heligan is ‘Drawing in the
Heligan Harvest’, complimenting the seasonal
gardening activities and the annual Harvest
display. Anyone can get involved – you are
free to bring your own equipment, although
basic art materials will be available. All
ages are welcome and under 16’s must be
accompanied by an adult.

21st-23rd September, redruth Town Centre/Fairfield
The famous Cornish Pasty Festival returns to Redruth over the
weekend of 21st to 23rd September. As always the festival celebrates
all that is Cornish. This year sees the festival kick off on Friday 21st
with street theatre re-enacting the story of a Redruth man who is
forced to sell his wife to fund emigration to a foreign land. Whist
on Saturday, join the revellers in celebrating Pasty Day, where you
can enjoy a pasty or three and washed down with the finest drinks
Cornwall has to offer.
The festival closes on Sunday with a morning walk around Redrurth’s
mining heritage sites, paying homage to the famed tin miners and
their families.

The Alnwick Garden is one of the most exciting contemporary gardens on earth. A garden

prides itself on being a place for families with lots of chances to get wet and play. You can

Serpent Garden
In the Serpent Garden, eight water
sculptures nestle in the coils of a topiary
serpent, leading you to Torricelli, an
interactive water sculpture which fills slowly
until its ground jets spring to life. Torricelli
works with the scientific principle of
hydrostatic pressure, and each of the water
sculptures are designed to show a different
aspect of water and how it can be made to
look and move.
The water sculptures have been created
by William Pye, one of the world’s leading
water sculptors, who brings art and science
together in his work. Each one is made from
mirror-polished stainless steel.
The Poison Garden
Behind the locked gates of the Poison Garden,
guides share tales of deadly plants. Myths and
legends are uncovered, along with facts from
science and history.
Many of the plants are already well-known for
their medicinal properties, but as its creator,
the Duchess of Northumberland said:
‘I wondered why so many gardens around the
world focused on the healing power of plants
rather than their ability to kill... I felt that most
children I knew would be more interested in
hearing how a plant killed, how long it would
take you to die if you ate it and how gruesome
and painful the death might be.’
There are over 100 plants of varying
deadliness grown in the Poison Garden. Some
of the plants are beautiful despite being
deadly, and other look so harmless it is hard to
imagine their dangerous, even fatal, qualities.

pARK MANAGERs UpDATE
I would just like to take this oportunity to thank everyone for
all their help during the Jubilee festivities. From the response we
have had since, we really need to make up another excuse so we
can throw another party – it really was a cracking day!
Luckily the weather was fantastic and we were blown away with the home baking on show which wouldn’t
have looked out of place on an episode of Masterchef. With everyone’s great fundraising efforts on the day
we managed to raise nearly £500 which is a fantastic amount for our two charities, Cash for Kids and Cancer
Research UK.
This update is turning into one big thank you message but we have been astounded yet again by the generosity
show by our owners, the current total for the Three Peaks Bike and Hike Challenge added to all our fundraising
efforts this year now totals well over £12,000, just over half way to hitting our target. The lads are still walking
like John Wayne but it was a fantastic effort and well worth the pain. So well done to all who took part.
We look forward to seeing you all on park over the coming months, making the most of the indian summer which
we have booked in advance.

Lee has over nine years’ experience in

when the spectacular Firework Championships returns to the popular

The 4th Lancaster Music Festival takes place October 12th through

The skies above Lancaster will be ablaze with colour once again when
Lancaster City Council launches its 2012 Firework Spectacular.
Taking place on 3rd November, the event is shaping up to be
bigger and better than ever – especially since this year the theme
is based on the Lancashire Witches marking the culmination of the
commemorative events of the 400th anniversary of the infamous
Witch Trials.
There will be themed activities to get involved in during the day,
including guided walks, storytelling, arts and crafts and lantern-making
workshops before the main event in the evening.

South East Cornwall’s best kept
secret, Lantic Bay is a quiet
sheltered cove with white sands,
making it feel more like the Mediterranean,
than Cornwall. The beach makes for a great
walk and is also dog friendly.
Getting to Lantic Bay involves a walk and
steep trek for about 20 minutes down to the
beach, but the far reaching views from the top
of the cliff are amazing and the secluded beach
is ideal for relaxing on when you get there.
This is an excellent beach well worth a visit,
but be warned due to strong riptides bathing
can be hazardous!
pAr sAnds - Bike ride
From quiet country lanes
meandering through picturesque
villages and ancient harbours,
to more challenging off-road routes in
the Cornish countryside, Cornwall offers a
fantastic variety of cycling routes to discover.
The Camel Trail is one of the most successful
recreational trails in the UK and takes you
18 miles along a disused railway line between
Bodmin, Wadebridge and Padstow – you can
hire bikes from each location so there’s no
excuse not to explore and enjoy the stunning
landscapes from your saddle!
The Coast to Coast trail is also ideal for
those with young children, while there’re the
more challenging North Cornwall coastal
roads providing the steepest gradients in the
county. The Clay Trails around St Austell offer
5 different routes taking you across dramatic
scenery of landscape well known for its pits
from the old clay mining industry 250 years
ago. These trails, which opened in 2005,
enable visitors to enjoy this unique area of
Cornwall by foot or bike, and their stunning
views and sense of peace are waiting to be
enjoyed and appreciated!

Take a relaxing walk around
Preston Park and discover the
peace and tranquillity it has to
offer. Set alongside the River Tees with both
woodland and grassed areas makes it the
perfect place to explore with your four legged
friend, with plenty of off lead areas for them to
have a good run around and investigate.
Quarry Woods Local Nature Reserve is
Preston Parks very own nature reserve with
the woodland being declared a nature reserve
back in 2004. The former Victorian Quarry
has now been reclaimed by nature and on the
far southern edge of the park its mix of trees
such as beech, alder, oak, horse chestnut and
larch make this a pleasant and quiet retreat
from the bustle of other areas of the park.
Part of the quarry is now flooded and provides
a home for frogs, toads, newts and birds such
as the Moorhen. Birdsong and the drumming
of woodpeckers provide background noise
during the day, whilst Tawny Owls hoot at
night.
Why not treat your dog to a relaxing walk
through the peaceful surroundings of parkland,
with lots to discover.

A visit to Low Newton Junction
Nature Reserve is an interesting
one for those with four legs as well as two!
With so many different habitats in such a small
area the site provides an excellent wildlife
corridor.
Past uses as a sand quarry and a railway
junction has had a direct bearing on the
wide variety of habitats now present. With
rich grassland carpeting the old sand quarry,
containing wildflowers, as well as ponds
providing homes to toads, frogs, newts,
dragonflies and damselflies can be seen during
the warmer months.
The nature reserve boasts plenty of tree cover
too, with birch, oak, willow and hawthorn
providing homes for a wide variety of birds.
Low Newton, is a great place to explore on
foot, with or without your pooch!

Durham and its surrounding
areas offer plenty of cycling
opportunities for all ages and abilities: from
quiet country roads for easy rides on gentle
gradients, to more challenging climbs and
routes for the more experienced cyclist.
Hamsterley Forest, right in the heart of
the Durham Dales, is a 5,000 acre mixed
woodland which is a magnet for mountain
bikers, offering the training loop and top
quality off-road cycle trails, as well as
the high octane four-cross and downhill
mountain bike courses provided by Descend
Hamsterley. If you’re looking for a thrill and
are a keen off-roader this is the place for
you!
It’s worth checking out the Woods &
Wheels cycle hire centre and shop in
Hamsterley Forest, which stocks bikes and
accessories for all the family to hire, helping
you get the most from your outdoor
experience. All cycle trails start by the
information point opposite the shops, so
cover more distance and get the most from
your experience of biking in the outdoors
from here – whether you want big downhill
thrills or a quiet family cycle ride.

Worden Park is the largest park within the borough
of South Ribble, attracting over 1/4 million visitors
every year. As well as offering over 60 hectares
of meadows, woodlands and playing fields, it’s a breath-taking,
immaculately kept park featuring an amazing children’s play area,
steam model railway, hedge maze, arts and craft centre, coffee
shop, walk, gardens and more.
With a landscape which includes mature woodlands, wildflower
meadows and three historic ponds. Worden Park is very popular
with dog walkers, which are welcome throughout the stunning park.
As well as the usual dog waste bins there is also a dog washing
shower situated next to the main parking area – perfect for those
muddy paws! The large expanse of parkland makes it a dog walker’s
paradise with the wooded area to the south of the park being the
most popular spot including the tributary of the River Lostock,
which runs through the wooded area and is a safe place for dogs
to swim.

tywn Ghyll – Bike ride
There’s so much beautiful countryside to explore in
Lancashire you might want to discover it by bike to get
around and see more: from quiet lanes and off road
cycle trails, to exhilarating moorland routes, cycling
in Lancashire is accessible to everyone. There are so many familyfriendly
and off-road routes to discover – pedal to the centre of the
British Isles at Dunsop Bridge and carry on to Dunsop Valley (8km)
taking you into the heart of the Forest of Bowland and alongside the
river. Or go off-road through the woodland of Gisburn Forest, which
offers plenty of wildlife and fauna to take in and is great for mountain
biking and climbing above the Ribble Valley with fantastic views of the
Forest.
There’s also the route between Foulridge and Victoria Park (10km)
which is part of the Pennine Cycleway – or you can take a detour
to Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford. Don’t forget as well the
Lancashire Cycleway – comprising of two circular routes meeting in
the village of Whalley in the Ribble Valley, which takes you through a
range of different landscapes: the rugged terrain of the Bowland Hills,
through the pastures of the Fylde Plain, and the wonderful coastal
scenery at Silverdale.

The quaint Dales village of Muker
makes an idyllic starting point
to some fantastic walks. The Hay Meadows
are a fantastic place to start and are probably
the most dramatic example of flower rich fields
in the country and are a bit of an unsung
national treasure.
From Muker why not venture to the Hamlet
of Keld and enjoy some of the best views the
Yorkshire Dales has to offer. Not all walks are
easy however, with lots of stiles and steps, but
there are plenty of different routes, all well
marked so you can make your walk as easy or
as challenging as you like.
Once in the Hamlet of Keld you will feels as
though nothing has changed for hundreds
of years! Here in the Dales Heartland take
your time and enjoy everything this beautiful
season has to offer.
chAntry – Bike ride
Offering some of the finest
scenery in the country it’s
no surprise that the dramatic
landscape of the Yorkshire Dales attracts
visitors from all over to enjoy the moorlands,
valleys and views by foot, horse or bike.
You might like to check out the Dales Biking
Centre – an absolute must first-stop for
mountain bikers and road cyclists, offering
a café, workshop, bike shop, bike hire and a
wealth of information and advice for those
visiting the area and want to know where to
start from.
The whole area provides fabulous cycling
opportunities: from the wild and remote
Northern dales to the rolling farmland of
the East, there are gentle routes for all ages
to enjoy, and more challenging climbs over
the moorland for the more adventurous and
experienced bikers – either way there are
stunning views to be appreciated. The Gargave
is a lovely 8 mile route taking you through
delightful villages in the southern dales, or the
6 mile family favourite ride from Skipton to
Bolton Abbey.

One of the Northumberland’s
best kept secrets, this enchanting walk
takes you through a scenic gorge, peppered
with venerable trees to a hidden gem of a
waterfall. Another stand out features of the
walk is the areas of old Scots Pine and larch,
living reminders of the ancient forest of the
area, allowing you to explore the magical
secrets these trails have to offer.

When planning your walk please bear in
mind that this trail is mainly on un-surfaced
forest tracks that have a number of short,
sharp inclines traversed by small sections of
steps (with and without handrails).
Although this walk is a little farther
away from park than we would usually
recommend, we thought it made the perfect
autumn walk, showcasing the best of
Northumberland’s well kept secrets.
AmBle links – Bike ride
For those wanting nothing
more than to take their family
or friends on a bike ride,
the Northumberland coast
and countryside offers many miles of safe
country roads and car-free tracks, allowing
you to take in the beautiful surroundings
and stop off at the picturesque villages and
great pubs and cafes you’ll pass through.
There’s no excuse not to get on a bike and
get exploring from the comfort of your
saddle!
Make sure you visit the two new cycle hubs
in Haltwhistle and Wooler, each with seven
routes on offer to suit all ages and abilities.
There’s also the Hadrian’s Cycleway which
stretches the length of the World Heritage
Site, taking in the Roman forts and temples
as you peddle along through market towns
and quaint villages. The Coast and Castles
cycle route showcases some of the best
coastal attractions including Holy Island
and Bamburgh Castle as it weaves its way
between Newcastle and Edingburgh.

Well it’s been quite a hectic few months here at Chantry, we
hope everyone has enjoyed their summer as much as we have
and are ready for some drier weather as we head into autumn.
Over the summer we had loads of fantastic owner events. One of the most memorable was the Jubilee
celebrations. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended our street party, as well as donated so
generously, it was a fantastic day blessed with glorious sunshine!
This October there will be more celebrations on park as we celebrate Chantry’s 50th year as a holiday park! We
would like to share such a big mile stone in Chantry’s history with a party for all our owners. Please read on to find
out more details about our celebration plans.

Since my arrival at Chantry it has become apparent to me how
important Sue is to the whole set up in the office. She has a
tremendous relationship with the owners and is in total control

the Five Star Employee Award.

THE TORCH COMEs TO lEyBURN
Leyburn played its part in the Olympics as it welcomed the torch
with hundreds of locals, including many of our owners, lining the
streets to cheer it along as it made its way from the market place
towards Wensleydale School.
It was glorious to witness such an exciting part of Leyburn’s history,
bringing so many of its residents out onto the street to celebrate
our great sporting nation. It was a fabulous day for all the family,
full of theatre, a rich tapestry of goodwill, patriotism and general
merrymaking.

WINE NIGHT
saturday 14th july saw Chantry hold
its 2nd Cheese and Wine tasting of the
season. The turnout was exceptional, with
even 2 visitors from Twyn Ghyll joining us.
Once again the Wensleydale
Creamery supplied us with some
exceptional cheeses, including the rather
interesting blend of Wensleydale with strawberries and clotted cream,
which was really very pleasant. However the clear winner of the day, as
always was the Wensleydale with ginger, which seems to be a favourite
with almost everyone who tries it.
James did a fantastic job of choosing the wines, which were supplied by
Campbell’s of Leyburn. Once again the sun came out to play and we
were blessed with a grand afternoon which was enjoyed by all.

Two year old ‘boy racer’ alfie can be seen cruising around
the roads of Chantry in his new Bugatti Veron. The remote
controlled car, a pint sized replica, was bought by his
Grandad, a Chantry owner.

50 yEARs AT CHANTRy
This year Chantry will be celebrating 50 years since it
welcomed its first holiday visitors.

Since its beginnings the site in the beautiful
setting of Leyburn has seen many changes,
evolving into the retreat it is today. Over the
years Chantry has seen families and couples of
all ages settle into their holiday home base to
explore and experience the surrounding area
of the Yorkshire Dales, enjoying the delights of
this part of the UK for years gone by. The park
has had its own shop selling local produce
from nearby farms, and a bowling green which
still exists but is no longer in use as well as
many more changes.
Fifty years ago the owner of the land at the
time in 1961 decided to create a holiday site
which stood above any that existed at the
time. He wanted to create a more natural rural
retreat where holidaymakers could experience
something different from the norm of the time
Our Jubilee Day Celebrations
The 4th of June saw Chantry celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the weather
being so unpredictable we were a little worried it may well let us down, but on the day it all
came together with the sun putting in an all-day appearance.
The day began with our great owners helping
to organise the day’s festivities. With all jobs
being taken on with enthusiasm for the day
ahead; everything from labelling up the many
donations received, to cupcakes made by
our housekeeper Sharon, or the wonderful
homemade earrings made by the Totty’s of
C070. We had a massive 104 donations
towards the tombola, which made a great
contribution to our two charities of just over
£500!

After a lot of hard work, the tables were set,
the bunting in place and the tents were ready,
it was on with the day’s festivities!
The best dressed dog launched the day, with
our fabulous four legged friends strutting
their stuff. Mrs Bushby our resident dog judge
took to the floor to meet the brave dogs who
embraced the spirit of the occasion, from
simple collars to fully blown queen costumes.
The oohs and aahhhhs from the great turn
out of spectators made it plain they were all
winners.
Next on the catwalk was the owners in Jubilee
Dress. Everyone did themselves proud with an
array of hats, to full blown head outfits. The
turnout of willing participants was brilliant.
We would like to thank Mrs Charlton and Mrs
Manley who had the hard job helping us judge
both the adult and child categories.
Well done to everyone who
entered, all your efforts truly got
us in the party spirit.
With the arrival of our
caricature artist Ivor, the
queue started forming and
just kept growing. The day
continued and just

other than the usual seaside resorts where
most holiday parks were based. Over the years
holidaying in places like the North Yorkshire
National Parks has really come into its own,
with its relaxing ambience, stunning scenery
and outdoor pursuits.
We have managed to obtain a few photos from
days gone by, but if anyone has any pictures
or stories of their time here at Chantry over
the years, we would love to hear from you –
we hope to do a 50th celebratory feature in
time for Christmas!

the parks 50th birthday. details will be sent

food fit for a Queen and her court, the DJ blasting
songs from the 1950’s all the way to the present,
aswell as a jubilee quiz and raffle.
We even celebrated a Diamond Jubilee birthday
with Mrs Joan Ross of C117’s who’s mother
celebrated her 64th birthday.
The day came to an end with some of the children
helping launch the helium balloons off into the
summer evening sky. We were delighted to
have been able to celebrate such a momentous
occasion with our owners, and that you were all so
generous with your time, donations, and spirit, we
couldn’t have done it without you!

Set in Hawes, at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, is The Wensleydale Creamery, home
of Real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese. The Creamery opens its doors for you to go and
enjoy the Wensleydale Cheese experience at its Visitor Centre, one of the largest tourist
attractions in the Yorkshire Dales.
Handcrafted to time-honoured recipes, the Wensleydale Creamery produces a wide range
of cheeses using milk supplied by local farming families. At the Visitor Centre, watch the
famous cheese being created from the viewing gallery and learn about the history of Real
Yorkshire Wensleydale in the museum.
If you’d like a taste of Wensleydale, sample their cheeses in their recently expanded
specialist cheese shop and deli, enjoy a bite to eat in the ‘1897’ coffee shop, savour
dishes served in the Calvert’s licensed restaurant or purchase locally produce items in the

member of the family.

Set in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, the Masham Sheep Fair offers
a packed programme on both days, with a Sheep Show, Sheep

York Festival of Food & Drink is a 10 day citywide
event to promote local and regional food and
drink, attracting up to 150,000 visitors a year who
visit York to enjoy this beautiful heritage city and

SPOOKTASTIC IDEAS
halloween – the last day in october when kids dress up in scary
costumes and go trick-or-treating and pumpkins are carved. it might
be seen as a commercially-driven American occasion but it actually
originates from ireland and has roots in the celtic festival of samhain,
meaning ‘summer’s end’: living things would die and hibernate to be
reborn and rejuvenated in the following spring. it should be seen as
another family occasion worth celebrating, a time to have fun, enjoy
dressing up in scary costumes and make some horror-themed treats.
we’ve got some ideas for you here!
Get carving!
You can be sure to pick up a pumpkin from any supermarket, local shop or greengrocer
during October; make sure you buy one a bit in advance so you don’t risk them all selling
out, they’re very much in demand at this time of year! Once you’re sorted with one it’s
worth looking on the internet for some pattern ideas before you start carving – or at least
try to replicate it!
Scare yourselves silly
If you’re planning to celebrate Halloween at home, get everyone
together and stay up late watching scary films – grab the popcorn,
drinks and blanket and prepare to hide under it as you spook
yourselves silly. How about family classics ‘Hocus Pocus’, ‘Casper’,
‘The Witches’ or ‘Ghostbusters’, or the more adult choices such as
‘Paranormal Activity’ series, ‘The Blair Witch Project’, ‘The Exorcist’,
‘Scream’ or ‘The Shining’.

You don’t have to spend loads of money
on expensive scary costumes, which will
only probably be worn once a year for this
occasion. Instead, why not get some cheap
materials or customise clothing and make your

Fiendish Food
Halloween is the perfect time to get in the
kitchen and a good excuse to bake some
horror-themed treats to make your parties go
off with a scream and impress trick-or-treaters.
We’ve got some great ideas in the food
section but cupcakes and biscuits go down a
treat – get youngsters involved in decorating
them with all kinds of Halloween-inspired
patterns.

Get together, turn the lights off, get a torch
and go round the circle telling each other
horror stories and see who tells the scariest
– they win a prize! Or make it more fun and
play Halloween-inspired games: how about
apple bobbing, a Halloween treasure hunt,

the Black Cat’. Keeping the humorous theme,

Get crafty
Make your own decorations and props for the
house and get everyone involved. You’ll be able
to find all sorts in shops during the run-up to 31 st
October, from candles, toy bats, cobwebs and
witches’ cats and brooms to create more of an
atmosphere, and for trick-or-treaters to see from
outside in your windows or garden.
PENDLE WITCHES
We thought we’d get into the spirit of Halloween and all
things related to the spookiest night of the year by putting
the spotlight on lancashire’s infamous pendle Witches.
during the 16 th century whole districts in some parts of this county appeared to be
contaminated with the presence of witches;
men and beasts languished under their
charm and power, while farmer’s crops
were consigned to destruction. the witch
trials came at a time of religious upheaval
and catholicism was the background of
those being accused and viewed with the
deepest suspicion. king James passed the
1604 witchcraft Act which imposed harsh
penalties for witchcraft – even so, this
country was less ready to condemn than
most countries.
today the tale of the pendle witches still casts a spell 400 years after the trials;
word of mouth, books, tv programmes and curiosity have kept the tale alive. yet the
stone-flagged dungeon beneath the 700-year-old Witches Tower at Lancaster Castle,
where the witches were held for their trials, is one of the few remaining connections to
this eerie piece of history. you can travel through this beautiful lancashire landscape
but when it gets dark the dominating pendle hill casts the imagination back to these
sinister times.

We all hope you’ve has a fantastic
summer with us at Amble links, and
would like to take this opportunity to
thank you for the patience shown with
our ‘summer’ weather. Even though it
was the wettest summer on record
in true Amble spirit we all had a great
time, we hope you feel the same.
We would also like to say a huge thank you for the support shown
to the Park Leisure Bike and Hike team on their mammoth adventure.
You astounded us with your generosity and I’m sure you will be
pleased to hear we have well passed the half way mark and are well on
the way to our £20,000 target for Cancer Research UK and Cash for
Kids.
Everyone in the team here at Amble is excited about the much
needed improvements coming to the Granary Bar and Bistro, as well
as the entertainment room over the winter months. The restaurant
and entertainment areas will both be doubled in size as well as extra
facilities being be added, helping create a fantastic new eating space
and entertainment experience for us all to enjoy. As this issue of ‘at
your leisure’ goes to print the plans will all be being finalised ready
to start work in early November 2012, and be completed by March
2013. We will of course keep you up to date when further details are
available.
We now also have suggestion boxes placed around the park, so
it’s even easier for you to let us know how we can improve your
experience on park with us.
Finally I would like to say a big thank you to the entire park’s team
for their commitment over the summer and for making it so enjoyable
for all our fantastic owners; and thank you for all the great comments
about the new team members. As always my door is open for any

Mrs Wardle from Whitley Bay has kindly
written a lovely piece on her experience
of being on park with us at amble.
Marjorie enjoys spending time here at Amble and can often be
spotted around park with her dog Barney, who loves his walks along
the dunes over on the Links.
Marjorie shared many years holidaying with her late husband camping,
and has owned caravans for over 30 years. Here Marjorie tells us
about her experiences at Amble:
“When I first came to Amble Links I hadn’t come to buy, but after
looking around the park I was just so impressed that I decided Amble was
the place for me!
My husband and I had owned caravans together for over 30 years, sadly
my husband passed away last year but when I told the staff at Amble
that I was on my own they couldn’t do enough for me. Everyone from
management to maintenance were great, nothing was a bother to them.
Georgina and Barbara made sure my caravan was in perfect condition to
hand over to me and look after all the owners on park brilliantly.
I have been an owner on three parks prior to Amble Links and none of
them have measured up to the standards Trevor and his team keep here,
they are the best.
All the amenities are excellent and the Carvery in the Granary is superb.
Jeremy, the park manager’s door is always open if you want a chat and
the sales team have always been great. James, Andy, Russell and Petra
have always been very helpful. I couldn’t be happier!
I hope I shall be here for many years; it’s always nice to see a smiling
face in the office or to get a wave from everyone.

pUFFIN CRUIsE AROUND
pUFFIN IslAND

My day out on the Puffins Cruise was one I would
recommend to anyone in or around Amble, it was a
fantastic way to see the region as well as learning
vast amounts about the area.
They have two boats
sailing at peak times.
Puffins on the sea we
sailed passed, with
Amble beach in the
background.
Luckily I managed to pick a fair day to venture out (a rare occurrence
this summer I know!), we set sail at 2.30, with the trip lasting 1 1 ⁄2
hours. The price for an adult ticket was just £6 which I thought was
very reasonable considering how much I saw and learnt while on the
trip. It was fantastic to be able to get so close to the wildlife, including
puffins and seals, it’s a great thing to be able watch animals in their
natural habitats.
To end my day out I decided nothing would beat sitting in the
harbour and tucking into some fish and chips, followed by a delicious
hot chocolate in Spurelli’s….perfect!

Olympic Torch Bearer, 12 year old Logan from Ashington carried
the flame through Amble on 15th June 2012. Wet weather failed
to extinguish Olympic fever in Amble the morning Logan ran with
the torch, as hardy souls braved the elements to welcome the iconic
flame.

Following the success of last year’s event,
Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival returns for
its eighth annual celebration of the art of film,
illuminating the whole town through premiere
screenings, interactive installations and
specially commissioned projections.
If you’re into all things media it’s worth
checking out as there’ll be an exciting lineup
of films, plenty of live events, a youth
programme and the artist trail – using Berwick
itself as a set and platform for the festival
programme. This years’ event focuses on
the relationship between the still image and
moving image, and showcasing artists who
have crossed over from photography to
filmmaking – and of course, exploring the
boundaries in between.

GREAT NORTH Fly
21st – 22nd september – Eshott
Fun for all the family, the Great North Fly
returns to Eshott airfield 21st to 22nd
September. For those not in the know,
the annual event is primarily a celebration
of aviation but features other attractions
including classic cars and military vehicles. This
year’s Fly will once again feature a number
of aircraft from history. Unfortunately the
legendary Spitfire, which in 2011 returned to
the Eshott airfield after a noticeable 65 year
absence will not be appearing
Whilst the Great North Fly’s emphasis is on
having fun, it also has a serious side; raising
money for our Armed Forces, with it again
proudly supporting The Royal British Legion,
Help for Heroes, Fallen Fusiliers and Project
Mobility.
Airfield owner Storm Smith, welcomes the
event to the former WW2 Spitfire base in
Northumberland. The show, which last year
raised in excess of £2,500, is entirely put
together by volunteers with no sponsorship or
funding from outside.
This event is not to be missed, so why not pop
down to Eshott airfield, just south of Felton
for a great day of fun and enjoy:

THE GRANARY LEISURE COMPLEX - DEFIBRILLATOR
Customer service at Amble links has moved to a new level
with the introduction of a defibrillator at the Granary leisure
Centre.
Park Leisure has joined in partnership
with the Community Heartbeat Trust to
purchase a defibrillator to benefit holiday
park residents, staff, and the general public,
increasing the chances of a healthy outcome
following a heart attack.
Sudden cardiac arrest can strike people of
all ages and fitness levels. It strikes suddenly,
without warning and in the UK alone kills
2000 people each week, at least 12 being
children. All the lifeguards and managers at
the pool have received in depth training in
the use of the defibrillator and C.P.R. and
whilst ready and qualified to act we hope it
will never prove necessary!

which will contribute to the well-being of

We recognise that the winter is still long way off, but we feel that
it’s essential to think about the precautionary measures required
to ensure that your holiday home remains in good condition and
completely secure. Maintenance of your holiday home will ensure
good condition and help to protect your investment.
Winterisation is necessary to help protect your holiday home
from the effects of the winter months. Failure to take adequate
precautions could lead to avoidable damage to the likes of

us at Kingfisher over the summer months, so

Mini Bus
We just wanted to drop our owners a quick
note to clear up any confusion about our
free mini bus service running between
Kingfisher and Heather View, which is for
patrons of the Crazy Bear only.
The service is offered on a Friday and
Saturday night with the addition of
Sunday nights on a bank holiday weekend.
Pre-booking your seat is required due to
spaces being limited to 15, if you speak to
reception they will be happy to book you a
place. Don’t worry about the bus being full,
if there are no spaces left the bus will make
two trips when required.

Weardale have benefitted from the weather conditions this season
so far and are looking green and lush to say the least. The flowers
and baskets are now in full bloom and once again haven’t let us
down. The grounds teams on both parks have worked very hard to
keep our parks to the highest of standards that we have all become
accustomed. Thanks very much boys keep up the great work.
Mick Smailes who is the new Sales Manager at Kingfisher has asked
me to thank you all for the warm welcome you have given him. Mick
has come from within the industry and has been very impressed with
how we operate our parks and says the original and new customers
he has had to deal with so far has been an absolute pleasure. We also
now have a new customer service person called Crystal Hetherington.
Crystal will be working between both parks in Weardale helping Janet
and Sarah. She has been with us now for a short while but has already
settled in really well, welcome to you both!

Mark 29, son of the Smith family on River View has recently won a regional dance competition
which will lead to a televised final, excitingly being held at the world famous Winter Gardens in
Blackpool in November.
Mark regularly attends the Joanne Lowe School of Dance in Darlington and has always been keen
on the arts, especially enjoying Karaoke in the Crazy Bear, where no night would be complete
without him entertaining fellow owners with a song or two!

FROsTERlEy MARBlE
Around 350 million years ago, when
england was situated close to the equator,
weardale lay under a semi-tropical
sea, with a particular species of horn
coral called ‘dibunophylum Bipartitum’
flourishing on its sea bed.
Sediments containing iron and zinc settled
over the corals and hardened under the
pressure from further limestone deposits,
producing a black and white photograph of
the sea bed at the time.
Frosterley marble is not true marble but
is instead fossilised limestone that is hard
enough to take an attractive polish. The
stone gets its beauty from the many fossils
that became encased within the stone from
the sea bed, creating beautiful patterns
within the rock, which is where it’s nick name
‘the cockle post’ came from.
Frosterley marble has been taken from
the area for more than 700 years, great
examples of the rock can be found in the
decorative columns in Durham Cathedral
dating all the way back to 1350. Other
examples of Frosterley Marble can be found
at several places around the village, including
the church of St Michael and All Saints, as
well as the railway station, so keep your
eyes peeled for these beautiful slices of local
history.

IT’S HERE, IT’S TOUGH
The Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Pennines is a 78 mile closed road
cycling sportive taking place in County Durham on the 7th October
2012. Over 3,000 cyclists are expected to be mounting the start line
for this inaugural event which takes participants through some of the
most beautiful, albeit challenging, terrain the North of England has to
offer.
The route has been released and promises to showcase the beautiful
countryside of the North East of England with a 78 mile route round
County Durham. Starting at Ushaw College, just a few miles from
Durham city, the route heads south towards Witton Park, host to
the first climb of the day, before turning west through the rolling
countryside in Middleton-in-Teesdale for the second climb. Following
a quick descent, its north again via St John’s Chapel to Blanchland
with a few climbs along the way before heading east back through
Castleside to the finish at Ushaw College.
The event will be supported by Durham County Council, which
has committed to providing around £30,000 of in-kind aid. Steve
Howell, Head of Sport and Leisure said: “County Durham has a rapidly
growing global reputation as a fantastic venue for world class cycling
spectaculars.
“We are delighted our county has been chosen to host this event
and feel sure the breathtaking countryside and unique geographical
challenges offered by the Dales, will prove hugely popular.”
Marie Curie Cancer Care is the official Charity Partner of the Etape
Series 2012. All funds raised by cyclists taking part in the Marie Curie
Cancer Care Etape Pennines will enable Marie Curie nurses to provide
more free care and support to terminally ill people and their families.

ideal place to go for Christmas shopping. The
huge craft and gift marquee features over

Seasonal food ideas
A big part of halloween is of course the array of
wonderful foods on offer during the autumn season –
a time of harvesting and taking stock for the cold winter
months.
With the help of chef and proprietor Tom Banks from the Black Swan, Oldstead, a Michelin star
pub & restaurant with 3 AA rosettes, we’ve put together a list of some of the best seasonal
autumn food. This produce will be cheaper, fresher and in abundance so you can enjoy it at its
best!
A quick word from Tom – what autumn means for him as a chef:
‘It’s got to be all the amazing fruit and root veg available, plus the fact that it’s game season.
Then there’s halloween, which means only one thing… pumpkins! If your struggling for things to do
with your pumpkin why not try a pumpkin-based desserts: they make great ice cream or custard-based
tarts, or there’s pumpkin crème brulee which is easy for people at home to make. And don’t forget
the humble chestnut!’

Swamp soup with
witches scabs
inGredients:
1 tbsp sunflower oil
1 onion, peeled and finely chopped
300g potatoes, peeled and cut into small
cubes
500g frozen peas
1.5 litres vegetable stock
150g streaky bacon
300g can mushy peas
Get cookinG!
1 Heat the oil in a large pan and gently fry the
onion until soft but not browned. Add the
potatoes, peas and stock and bring to the
boil, cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
2 While the soup is cooking, grill the bacon
until crispy. Drain onto absorbent kitchen
paper and snip into small pieces - the
‘scabs’.
3 Blend the soup in batches in a food
processor then return to the pan with the
mushy peas, stir well and heat through.
Serve with a sprinkling of crispy bacon.
Sticky hot dog
jackets
inGredients:
4 baking potatoes
olive oil (for brushing)
glaze:
2 tbsp maple syrup
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
2 tsp wholegrain mustard
1 tsp tomato puree
8 pork sausages
8 tbsp mayo
2 tsp wholegrain mustard
2 tbsp snipped chives or finely chopped
spring onion
Get cookinG!
1 Rub the potatoes with a little oil, then
sprinkle generously with salt (preferably
flakes) and black pepper. Wrap each one
in double-thickness foil and cook on the
barbecue for 1 hour, turning frequently,
until cooked. Or bake unwrapped in the
oven at fan 180c/ conventional 200c/gas
6 for the same amount of time.
2 Mix the maple syrup, vinegar, mustard and
tomato purée to make a glaze. Brush over
the sausages and cook on the barbecue,
turning and basting often, for 10 minutes
until cooked and sticky. Meanwhile, mix the
mayo ingredients in a small bowl.
3 Unwrap the potatoes and split down the
middle. Add mayo and sausages (like a hot
dog). Serve with a leafy salad.
Chocolate spider
cookies
mAkes: 14
reAdy in: 35 minUtes
inGredients:
200g dark/milk chocolate, broken into
chunks
113g licquorice catherine wheels (e.g.
barratts)
2 x 154g packs oreo cookies
white & black icing pens
Get mAkinG!
1 Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl
over a pan of barely simmering water. Once
melted, turn off the heat and leave the
chocolate in the bowl to keep warm while
you assemble the spiders.
2 Unroll some of the liquorice wheels and cut
into 2-3cm lengths to use as the chocolate
spiders’ legs.
3 Splodge a small tsp of chocolate onto half
of the cookies. Arrange eight liquorice
legs on top, then sandwich with another
cookie. Spread some more chocolate on
top of the second cookie to cover, then put
somewhere cool to set.
4 Use the icing pens to add eyes, by first
blobbing two big dots of white icing on
each, topped with two smaller dots of black
icing.

muffins

reAdy in 45 minUtes
inGredients:
225g self-raising flour
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp ground ginger
150ml sunflower oil
150ml soured cream
225g caster sugar
2 large eggs
125g piece pumpkin or butternut squash,
coarsely grated
75g walnut pieces, chopped
Get BAkinG!
1 Preheat the oven to 200°c/fan180°c/gas
and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper
cases.
2 Put the flour, bicarbonate of soda and
ginger in a bowl. Pour the oil into a jug and
add the soured cream, sugar and eggs and
beat with a fork until well blended. Pour the
wet ingredients into the dry, then add the
pumpkin and walnuts and stir well.
3 Spoon into the paper cases and bake for
15-20 minutes, until well risen and firm.
Leave to cool.
4 For the frosting, beat together the butter
and cream cheese until softened and
combined. Stir in the icing sugar, vanilla and
cinnamon until smooth. Spread over the
tops of the cooled muffins.
