12Injection Molded Plastic Chambercontains Controlled Release CoolantPellets, which are located upstream of thefilter media.Controlled Release Coated Pelletsdiffuse SCAs into the system (whenexposed to heat and coolant flow), whichare then filtered, prior to entering theengine. BTE and BTA PLUS SupplementalCoolant Additives provide the bestprotection from cavitation, scale, rust andother forms of corrosion, while reducingthe potential for water pump seal leaks.12563SCA Diffusion Control Orificemeters diffusion of SCA chemical into coolantflow (to allow SCAs to be released in theamount required to maintain proper systembalance) for up to 150,000 miles (241,403km) of service.745Epoxy Coated Housingreduces the possibility of corrosion duringextended service intervals.Spring Protectorisolates dissimilar metals to prevent corrosion.386Synthetic Mediais designed to withstand heat anddegradation from long-term exposure tocoolant flow. High capacity and efficiencyallows media to trap contaminants thatcould reduce system efficiency.497Flow Control Orificemeters flow of coolant through filter.8Heavy-Duty Baseplatemade from stamped steel, is designed towithstand extended service intervals.9Double-Rolled Tuck Lock Seamprevents coolant leaks.Baldwin Filters patented Controlled Release Coolant Filters contain Supplemental Coolant Additives(SCAs) to protect diesel engine cooling systems for one year or 150,000 miles. Controlled Release Coolant Filters Outperform CompetitorsBaldwin Controlled Release CoolantFilter Flow SchematicInlet Flow Outlet Flow Diffusing ChemicalBaldwin Filters Controlled ReleaseCoolant Filters utilize a patented processthat allows Supplemental CoolantAdditives (SCAs) to be released intoyour coolant system only when heat andcooling flow are present. Our field testsshow that the supplemental additives arereleased at an even rate. This isimportant because competitors’ filterscan “dump” all the additives at once, potentially overcharging the system, leading to additive drop out. The otherextreme is not releasing enoughadditives near the end of a maintenanceperiod, leaving the system vulnerable tocavitation erosion and corrosion. With the Baldwin product, all coolant isconditioned with coolant additives priorto being filtered. This ensures that noundissolved particles from the chemicalmass can enter the system. It alsoensures that the flow control orificecannot be plugged. The competitiveproducts have a flow pattern that routesthe coolant through the filter elementfirst, leaving the possibility that solidscould plug the flow control orifice. Thiswould disable the filter, stopping theSCAs from entering the system andleaving engine components unprotected.Baldwin’s media is a high capacitysynthetic media designed to trapcontaminants and maintain its structurethrough a long service interval. The highefficiency synthetic media, used in somecompetitive products, has very lowcapacity to hold contaminants beforeplugging, leaving the system vulnerable.Once the filter plugs, the flow stops andno SCAs are released to protect thesystem. The media used in other primarycompetitor products is cellulose. On oursimulated service laboratory test stand,Test Prove Performance SuperiorityPthe media in the filter became soft andrestrictive, significantly reducing theflow through the filter. Without flow, theSCAs contained within the filter cannotbe released. One competitive long life design relieson corrosive coolant to begin the processthat releases the SCAs into the coolantsystem. In this process, a magnesiumplate is in contact with a coppercentertube that holds the SCA. When thecoolant becomes corrosive enough, areaction between the magnesium plateand the copper centertube occurs. As themagnesium corrodes, the SCAs areexposed to coolant and begin to dissolveinto the system. It takes considerabletime before the magnesium platecorrodes enough to allow the SCAs toenter the system. The cooling system isleft corrosive and unconditioned for thislong time interval. There is no correlation between thecorrosion of the magnesium plate andcavitation corrosion of wet sleeve liners.A system can have low enough SCAlevels to promote cavitation corrosion inwet liners, and still not be corrosiveenough to release the SCA chemical inthe filter. This is why the competitorinsists that you test your coolant additivelevel at every oil change interval and addliquid SCAs to the system.Percent Depletion10.90.80.70.60.50.40.30.20.100NitriteSCA Chemical Depletion Rates10 20 30 40 50Miles x 1,000TTSilicate MBT PhosphateNitrateBorateOz./Gal.21.81.61.41.210.80.60.40.200Typical Depletion of SCAs vs. MileageDepletion can occur inas little as 50,000 miles.10 20 30 40 50 60 70Miles x 1,000AfricaBaldwin Filters South AfricaPh: 27-21-534-0029Fax: 27-21-534-3730E-mail: africa@baldwinfilter.comChinaCLARCOR Filtration (China) Co., Ltd.Ph: 86-0536-2606308Fax: 86-0536-8656108E-mail: china@baldwinfilter.comMiddle EastBaldwin FiltersPh: (308) 237-9782Fax: (308) 237-9769E-mail: middleeast@baldwinfilter.comSoutheast Asia & Pacific RimBaldwin FiltersPh: 65-6382-6619Fax: 65-6382-6182E-mail: southeastasia@baldwinfilter.comAustralia & New ZealandBaldwin Filters Aust., Pty.
