WongThe Hong Kong Bird Watching Society LtdAbstractThe annual International Black-faced Spoonbill Census was conducted duringthe period of 6-8 January, 2006. A total of 1,679 Black-faced Spoonbills were countedduring the census which has a 14% increase from the figure of 1,475 birds in 2005census. Taiwan and Hong Kong still hold the two largest wintering flocks of thisspecies. A total of 70% of the known wintering population were counted in these twoareas. This known wintering Black-faced Spoonbill population is increasing innumbers since the commencement of this census, except slightly declines in winter1996-97 and 1998-99, indicating that this species is continuing to recover from thepreviously known low numbers.IntroductionBlack-faced Spoonbill Platalea minor inhabits to coastal areas on the east fringe ofAsia (Hancock et al. 1992, del Hoyo et al. 1992, Yu and Swennen 2004). Its worldknown population was small and only a few hundreds were present in 1990s(Kennerley 1990, Dahmer and Felley 2000). Therefore, it was listed as globallyendangered species (Collar et al. 1994, Baillie and Groombridge 1996, BirdLifeInternational 2000) and then more attention was paid to the conservation of thisspecies. Its population rose to over 1,000 individuals in January 2003 (Yu 2003),reached to over 1,200 birds in 2004 (Yu 2004), and even higher to over 1,400individuals in 2005 (Yu 2005). However, large proportion of this populationconcentrates in only a few places during winter, thus increase the chance thatsusceptible to some threats such as habitat degradation and destruction, and aviandisease.The wintering population of the Black-faced Spoonbills has been assessed bythis international census annually since 1993. This census was also listed as highpriority recommendation by Severinghaus et al. (1995) and proved to be an effective

and practical means to provide annual and comparable information on thepopulation and distribution of wintering Black-faced Spoonbills. The Hong KongBird Watching Society, an affiliate of BirdLife International, started coordinated theinternational census from 2003 onwards.MethodIn winter 2005-06, the census period was chosen as 6-8 January 2006. Censusdates have always be chosen in mid-winter because the spoonbills seem to be stablein this period. Map 1 shows the area covered by the census and also sites withwintering spoonbills in this winter. Surveys were carried out in areas whereBlack-faced Spoonbills had been reported before and habitats are suitable to thespoonbills. Guidelines were sent to surveyors before the census as technical basis.Field counts were done in a synchronized manner, making use of binoculars andtelescopes. Some other counts in the mid-winter period are also presented in thisreport.Counting of the spoonbills relies on voluntary efforts from counters includingexperienced bird watchers, researchers and ornithologists. The census results inFujian, Hainan, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, Taiwan and Vietnam are summarized bycoordinators in the respective regions. The counts in South Korea and some part ofChina mainland coast and the Philippines were carried out by individuals sending inseparate reports.Some sites in close proximity, such as Mai Po in Hong Kong, Futian in Shenzhenand Taipa in Macao, all are in the Pearl River Estuary in southern China. Spoonbillscan fly between these sites within a day. Hence, counts in these sites were conductedin synchronization.Results and discussionOverviewThe 2006 census gave a total figure of 1,679 Black-faced Spoonbills that is a newhigh number of the species (Table 1). It increased 14% from a figure of 1,475 birds inprevious census and the increasing rate is lower than the one in previous year butsimilar to 2004 (2005:22%, 2004:13%, Table 9). This is the seventh consecutive yearwith increasing the numbers and there were only two drops of numbers in winter1996-97 and 1998-99 (Figure 1).

In addition, ten Black-faced Spoonbills were recorded outside the census period,indicating that the actual number of the wintering Black-faced Spoonbills could behigher. The increase of the number is contributed mainly by more spoonbills presentin the two largest wintering congregation sites: Tainan area, Taiwan and Pearl RiverDelta, Hong Kong, Macao and Shenzhen. There were increases of 69 and 47individuals in these areas. The numbers in China mainland also have an increase of19 birds.All participants surveyed a total of 59 sites, of which spoonbills were found in40 sites (Table 1 and 2). This total number is fewer than the previous census (winter2004-05: 61 sites, winter 2003-04: 54 sites). It seems not influence the total number ofwintering spoonbills because all major sites of wintering spoonbills were covered inthis census. More discussion of the numbers and trends of wintering Black-facedSpoonbills in different places are made below.TaiwanA total of 826 Black-faced Spoonbills, constituting 49% of the known worldpopulation, were recorded in Taiwan during the census period (Table 1, Figure 2).This figure is a new high number in this area and it has a 9% increase from the figureof 757 birds in previous census (Table 3). The Chiku-Tsengwen Estuary area andSitsao of Tainan city hold 556 and 259 birds respectively and very few individuals(no more than five birds) were recorded at other three localities, namely Pa-changEstuary of Tainan, Ilan and Kimmen (Table 1).Pearl River Estuary (including Deep Bay in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, Taipa inMacao)Count of spoonbills in this area was conducted in a synchronous manner andthree counts were scheduled at 1500h, 1600h and 1700h in both sides of Deep Bay (i.e.Hong Kong and Shenzhen) and Taipa on each counting day. A total of 397Black-faced Spoonbills were counted in this area, of which 346 and 51 spoonbillswere counted at Deep Bay and Taipa respectively and these figures also represent21% and 3% of the known world population (Table 1, Table 4, Figure 3). The totalnumber in the Pearl River Estuary area has a 13% increase from a total of 311individuals in the previous year. Numbers in Deep Bay and Taipa are the new highcounts in this census which have an increase of 11% and 30% from the 2005 census.This census had a good coverage in Deep Bay area of both Hong Kong and

Shenzhen. It included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site, Lok Ma Chaufishponds, tidal area of ‘Outer’ Deep Bay (i.e. Lau Fau Shan to Nim Wan), the HongKong Wetland Park at Tin Shui Wai and the Futian National Nature Reserve,Shenzhen. In winter 2005-06, the maximum count of the Black-faced Spoonbills wasreported as 340 individuals at Mai Po in late December (John Allcock pers.com.) andthat high number is highly similar to the total count of 346 Black-faced Spoonbills inDeep Bay during the census. Again, it indicates that synchronized counts are aneffective mean to count the wintering spoonbills in this area.The total of 51 Black-faced Spoonbills counted at Macao is a new high count ofthis site during the census (Table 4). However, degradation and destruction ofcoastal habitat from reclamations are still the main threats to this site. More concernsand efforts are needed to safeguard this important site.China Mainland and Hainan IslandA total of 206 Black-faced Spoonbills were counted along the coast of Chinamainland and Hainan (Table 5) and this figure composed 12% of the known worldpopulation of this census (Figure 2). This is the new high number in this area and ithas a 10% increase of the figure of 187 birds recorded in previous census.Three important sites for the wintering Black-faced Spoonbills along the Chinamainland coast were discovered in previous censuses and these sites still held goodnumbers in the 2006 census. These sites are Dongfeng, Hainan (75 birds, constituting4.5% of the known world population); Haifeng, Guangdong (56 birds, constituting3.3% of the known world population); Xinhua Bay, Fujian (total 50 birds (31 birds atFuqian and 19 birds at Putian), constituting 3.0% of the known world population).Besides, smaller numbers of the Black-faced Spoonbills were also counted in severalplaces including Chongming Dongtan, Shanghai; Xiapu, Fujian; DongzhaigongNational Nature Reserve and Lingao of Hainan during the census period (Table 1).The well-known Yencheng National Nature Reserve in Jiangsu province wasstill not covered during the census period, although five birds were present inJanuary 2006. The coast of China mainland is very long and many areas are stilllargely under-surveyed. Hence, the actual wintering population in China mainlandcould be higher than this presented figure.Red River Delta, VietnamA total of 74 birds were counted at Xuan Thuy Nation Park during this census.

This figure is the second highest count in this area which is only one bird less thanthe historical high count recorded at winter 1995-96 (Table 1 and 6). This census wasconducted in the time of high tide and so this count was representative. The numbersin this site increased gradually in recent years that would be related to the bloomingof the whole global population. Surveys also took place at other places includingThai Binh estuary and Ha Nam Island (Table 2) but no spoonbills were seen.These seventy-four wintering Black-faced Spoonbills constituted 4.4% of theknown world population. Xuan Thuy National Park was previously the third largestwinter congregation site of this species. However, condition of the park becomes lessfavourable in recent year due to habitat degradation (Yu and Swennen 2001). In thiscensus, Dongfeng of Hainan, China (see above) replaces Xuan Thuy to become thethird largest wintering site of this species, where a flock of 75 birds were counted.JapanDuring this census, a total of 155 Black-faced Spoonbills were counted fromwestern Japan and Nansei-shoto Islands. This number is very similar to the figures oflast two previous years (i.e. 2004: 149 birds, 2005: 150 birds), representing that thewintering population in Japan is relatively stable (Table 7). The largest flock was 24birds at Imazu tidal flat, Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu Island and some other smallerflocks scattered in other sites (Table 1).Republic of KoreaTwenty-one Black-faced Spoonbills were recorded at Jeju Island in this censusand the number is same as the previous census. It indicates the number ofBlack-faced Spoonbills in Jeju Island is fairly stable. The number of Black-facedSpoonbill recorded in Jeju Island is a range of 14 to 29 birds (Table 8).[ThailandThere is no report of any individuals from Thailand this winter. One or twobirds, usually immature individuals, were found in the Gulf of Thailand in previoustwo censuses.]The PhilippinesOne bird was recorded at Batanes island in December 2005 but none was reportduring the census period. Single Black-faced Spoonbills were recorded in thePhilippines in previous three winters, indicating that this species may occur in aregular basis. Also, these recent records would be related to the overall increase of

the global population.ConclusionThe number of the Black-faced Spoonbill is increasing steadily in recent years.The known wintering population goes over 1,600 individuals in this census and theaverage percentage increase of the total known population is about 15% (Table 9).Such increasing rate helps this species to recover from the very low numbers in early1990s and this trend is very encouraging for saving this globally endangered speciesfrom the risk of extinction.Ten sites are identified as important sites to this species where at least 1% (i.e. 17individuals) of the known wintering populations of the Black-faced Spoonbills couldbe found. These sites are:• Tsengwen Estuary area including Chiku and Sitsao, Tainan – 815 birds (48.5%),• Deep Bay, Hong Kong and Shenzhen – 346 birds (21%),• Beili Bay, Dongfang, Hainan – 75 birds (4%),• Xuan Thuy National Park, Red River Delta – 74 birds (4%),• Haifeng, Guangdong – 56 birds (3%),• Taipa, Macao – 51 birds (3%),• Xinhua Bay, Fuqian and Putian, Fujian – 50 birds (3%),• Imazu-Higata, Fukuoka – 24 birds (1%),• Seongsanpo and Hado-ri fishponds, Jeju Island – 21 birds (1%) and• Manose River Estuary, Kagoshima – 19 birds (1%).Large proportion of the wintering Black-faced Spoonbills still depends on thetraditional sites in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Hence, this species is still susceptible tothreats such as habitat degradation and destruction, and any bird disease. Manybaseline information of this species in wintering grounds have been collected andgathered through this annual census, but the situation in breeding ground is stilllittle known and it is also important for the conservation of this species.

黑 臉 琵 鷺 全 球 同 步 普 查 :2006 年 1 月 6 至 8 日余 日 東 黃 志 俊香 港 觀 鳥 會 有 限 公 司( 認 可 公 共 性 質 慈 善 機 構 )撮 要2006 年 度 黑 臉 琵 鷺 全 球 同 步 普 查 於 1 月 6 至 8 日 期 間 進 行 。 有 關 普 查 共 錄 得 1,679隻 黑 臉 琵 鷺 , 較 2005 年 的 1,475 隻 有 14% 增 幅 。 已 知 的 越 冬 種 群 有 七 成 是 集 中於 台 灣 和 香 港 個 地 區 。 自 普 查 開 始 , 除 了 1996-97 和 1998-99 年 的 冬 天 有 輕 微 下降 外 , 這 越 冬 種 群 有 著 明 顯 的 增 加 趨 勢 , 反 映 這 鳥 種 正 由 從 前 的 低 數 字 逐 漸 恢 復 。引 言黑 臉 琵 鷺 Platelea minor 棲 息 於 東 亞 沿 海 地 區 (Hancock et al. 1992, del Hoyo et al.1992, Yu and Swennen 2004)。1990 年 代 初 , 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 全 球 已 知 數 量 只 有 數 百隻 (Kennerley 1990, Dahmer and Felley 2000), 因 而 列 入 全 球 受 脅 鳥 種 名 單(Collar et al. 1994, Baillie and Groombridge 1996, BirdLife International2000), 從 此 在 保 育 方 面 受 到 廣 泛 關 注 。 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 種 群 在 2003 年 1 月 上 升 至 超過 1,000 隻 (Yu 2003), 於 2004 年 多 過 1,200 隻 (Yu 2004), 並 於 2005 年 超 越 1,400隻 的 總 數 (Yu 2005)。 可 是 , 大 部 份 越 冬 琵 鷺 種 群 集 中 於 數 個 地 點 , 這 使 牠 們 受到 的 威 脅 包 括 生 態 環 境 質 素 下 降 和 破 壞 、 感 染 疾 病 等 機 會 隨 之 增 加 。自 從 1993 年 開 始 , 每 年 都 有 進 行 全 球 同 步 普 查 , 以 評 估 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 越 冬 種 群 狀況 。 這 項 普 查 並 被 劉 小 如 等 (1995) 列 入 為 優 先 保 育 次 序 。 現 時 這 項 調 查 已 證 實 為有 效 和 實 用 的 工 具 , 提 供 越 冬 黑 臉 琵 鷺 數 量 和 分 佈 資 料 。 國 際 鳥 盟 支 會 香 港 觀 鳥會 於 2003 年 起 開 始 統 籌 該 全 球 同 步 普 查 。普 查 方 法普 查 於 2006 年 1 月 6,7 及 8 日 進 行 。 日 期 選 擇 於 1 月 的 原 因 是 琵 鷺 數 量 於 冬 季 中 期較 為 穩 定 。 地 圖 1 顯 示 全 球 同 步 普 查 的 進 行 地 點 。 選 擇 這 些 地 點 的 原 因 是 它 們 過去 有 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 紀 錄 。 在 普 查 之 前 , 本 會 向 各 參 與 者 提 供 普 查 指 引 作 為 技 術 基礎 。 普 查 以 同 步 方 式 , 利 用 雙 筒 和 單 筒 望 遠 鏡 進 行 。 這 報 告 也 包 括 一 些 普 查 期 間外 的 點 算 數 目 。

琵 鷺 普 查 有 賴 各 地 資 深 觀 鳥 者 、 研 究 員 和 鳥 類 學 家 共 同 義 務 合 作 。 福 建 、 海 南 島 、香 港 、 日 本 、 澳 門 、 台 灣 和 越 南 的 普 查 結 果 由 當 地 的 統 籌 員 收 集 和 整 理 。 韓 國 、中 國 大 陸 其 他 地 方 和 菲 律 賓 , 則 由 個 別 人 士 提 交 紀 錄 。有 些 地 區 距 離 咫 尺 , 例 如 香 港 米 埔 、 深 圳 福 田 和 澳 門 路 環 , 都 是 位 於 華 南 珠 江 河口 地 區 , 琵 鷺 可 於 一 天 內 飛 達 這 幾 個 地 點 。 因 此 , 這 些 地 點 的 點 算 工 作 有 需 要 同步 進 行 。結 果 及 討 論綜 觀2006 年 普 查 期 間 共 錄 得 1,679 隻 黑 臉 琵 鷺 , 這 是 新 高 數 字 ( 表 1), 亦 較 2005 年 進行 的 調 查 增 加 了 14%, 有 關 升 幅 略 低 於 前 年 , 但 跟 2004 年 差 不 多 (2005 年 :22%;2004 年 :13%, 表 9)。 這 是 連 續 七 年 有 上 升 趨 勢 , 只 有 在 1996-97 冬 季 和 1998-99冬 季 年 有 輕 微 下 降 ( 圖 1)。黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 實 際 種 群 可 能 高 於 上 述 數 字 , 原 因 是 有 另 外 10 隻 琵 鷺 在 普 查 期 間 外錄 得 。 琵 鷺 數 目 的 升 幅 , 主 要 是 在 牠 們 的 兩 大 越 冬 地 - 台 灣 台 南 和 珠 江 三 角 洲( 香 港 、 澳 門 和 深 圳 ) 有 更 多 數 量 聚 集 。 台 灣 和 珠 江 三 角 洲 的 黑 臉 琵 鷺 數 量 分 別 增加 了 69 隻 和 47 隻 。 中 國 大 陸 方 面 亦 增 加 19 隻 。參 與 是 次 黑 臉 琵 鷺 全 球 同 步 普 查 的 人 員 共 考 察 了 59 個 調 查 地 點 , 其 中 40 個 有 黑臉 琵 鷺 紀 錄 ( 見 表 1 和 表 2)。 調 查 的 覆 蓋 範 圍 較 以 往 少 (2004-05 年 冬 :61 個 ,2003-04 年 冬 :54 個 ), 但 這 沒 有 影 響 到 冬 季 種 群 的 總 數 , 原 因 是 所 有 重 要 的 渡 冬地 已 經 覆 蓋 。 以 下 是 關 於 各 地 黑 臉 琵 鷺 越 冬 地 數 量 及 趨 勢 的 討 論 。台 灣台 灣 共 錄 得 826 隻 琵 鷺 ( 佔 全 球 已 知 總 數 的 49%, 見 表 1 和 圖 2), 這 個 是 新 高 數目 , 較 上 屆 普 查 的 757 隻 上 升 了 9%( 見 表 3)。 其 中 七 股 和 曾 文 溪 口 一 帶 , 以 及 台南 四 草 , 分 別 錄 得 556 和 259 隻 琵 鷺 , 而 其 他 三 個 地 點 包 括 台 南 八 掌 溪 口 、 宜 蘭以 及 金 門 則 錄 得 不 多 於 五 隻 的 琵 鷺 ( 見 表 1)。珠 江 河 口 ( 包 括 香 港 和 深 圳 的 后 海 灣 , 以 及 澳 門 路 環 )普 查 以 同 步 方 式 進 行 , 每 個 普 查 日 都 會 安 排 三 次 的 數 算 ( 下 午 三 時 、 四 時 及 五

時 ), 於 后 海 灣 兩 岸 ( 即 香 港 和 深 圳 ) 和 路 環 進 行 。 一 共 錄 得 397 隻 琵 鷺 。 其 中 346隻 ( 全 球 已 知 種 群 21%) 在 后 海 灣 錄 得 、51 隻 ( 全 球 已 知 種 群 3%) 在 路 環 錄 得 ( 見 表1、 表 4 和 圖 3)。 珠 江 河 口 的 數 目 較 前 年 的 311 隻 有 13% 升 幅 。 后 海 灣 和 路 環 的數 目 都 是 新 高 , 較 2005 年 的 普 查 分 別 有 11% 及 30% 的 升 幅 。香 港 和 深 圳 兩 地 的 普 查 覆 蓋 範 圍 相 當 高 , 包 括 米 埔 內 后 海 灣 國 際 重 要 濕 地 、 落 馬洲 魚 塘 區 、 外 后 海 灣 潮 澗 帶 ( 流 浮 山 至 稔 灣 ), 天 水 圍 香 港 濕 地 公 園 、 以 及 福 田 國家 級 自 然 保 護 區 。 有 關 最 高 數 字 接 近 2005 年 12 月 底 期 間 報 告 的 340 隻 (JohnAllcock 個 人 通 訊 ), 這 數 目 非 常 接 近 后 海 灣 總 數 的 346 隻 。 這 亦 證 實 了 在 這 地 區進 行 的 同 步 普 查 , 是 一 個 有 效 的 數 算 方 法 。普 查 期 間 在 澳 門 錄 得 新 高 數 目 51 隻 ( 見 表 4)。 可 是 , 填 海 工 程 導 致 生 境 破 壞 和 環境 質 素 下 降 仍 威 脅 著 該 區 的 越 冬 琵 鷺 。 這 個 擁 有 全 球 3% 越 冬 琵 鷺 的 棲 息 地 , 需要 更 多 的 關 注 和 努 力 去 保 護 這 地 點 。中 國 大 陸 和 海 南 島今 年 在 中 國 大 陸 和 海 南 島 共 錄 得 206 隻 琵 鷺 ( 見 表 5), 佔 全 球 已 知 種 群 12%( 見 圖2)。 這 除 了 是 一 個 新 高 數 目 , 亦 是 連 續 三 年 能 有 新 高 。 這 次 較 前 年 187 隻 有 10%增 幅 。在 前 次 普 查 發 現 的 三 個 位 於 中 國 大 陸 沿 海 的 主 要 越 冬 地 , 今 年 仍 有 不 少 的 黑 臉 琵鷺 。 它 們 包 括 海 南 東 方 (75 隻 , 佔 全 球 已 知 種 群 4.5%)、 廣 東 海 豐 (56 隻 , 佔 全 球已 知 種 群 3.3%)、 福 建 興 化 灣 ( 一 共 50 隻 ( 福 清 31 隻 和 莆 田 19 隻 ), 佔 全 球 已 知種 群 3.0%)。 除 此 , 少 量 的 黑 臉 琵 鷺 亦 在 普 查 期 間 出 現 於 其 他 地 點 , 包 括 上 海 崇明 東 灘 、 福 建 霞 浦 、 海 南 東 寨 港 國 家 自 然 保 護 區 和 臨 高 ( 見 表 1)。可 是 , 江 蘇 省 鹽 城 國 家 自 然 保 護 區 只 可 以 在 普 查 期 間 外 進 行 琵 鷺 數 算 工 作 。 在2006 年 1 月 只 有 5 隻 的 記 錄 。 中 國 大 陸 仍 有 很 長 的 海 岸 線 未 被 列 入 普 查 範 圍 ,所 以 , 實 際 的 越 冬 琵 鷺 數 目 可 能 會 高 於 現 時 的 結 果 。越 南 紅 河 口一 如 以 往 , 春 水 國 家 公 園 是 越 南 最 大 的 黑 臉 琵 鷺 越 冬 地 , 共 錄 得 74 隻 琵 鷺 , 這個 數 目 是 有 記 錄 的 第 二 高 , 較 1995-96 年 最 高 的 數 目 亦 只 是 少 一 隻 ( 表 1 及 表 6)。今 年 的 潮 汐 高 度 理 想 , 使 數 算 工 作 順 利 進 行 。 近 年 數 目 續 漸 增 加 , 很 可 能 跟 全 球總 數 增 加 有 關 。 其 他 的 地 點 包 括 太 平 河 口 和 哈 南 島 亦 有 進 行 普 查 , 但 沒 有 發 現 黑臉 琵 鷺 ( 表 2), 這 反 映 春 水 國 家 公 園 的 重 要 。

春 水 國 家 公 園 曾 是 黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 第 三 大 越 冬 地 , 在 是 次 的 普 查 中 錄 得 74 隻 , 佔 全球 已 知 總 數 4.4%, 被 海 南 東 方 的 75 隻 取 代 為 第 三 大 越 冬 地 點 。Yu 和 Swennen(2001) 指 出 生 境 質 素 下 降 , 使 該 國 公 園 整 體 狀 況 的 未 能 像 以 往 一 樣 , 提 供 適 合琵 鷺 棲 息 的 環 境 。日 本日 本 西 面 和 西 南 群 島 共 錄 得 155 隻 琵 鷺 , 這 個 數 目 跟 前 兩 年 相 當 接 近 (2004: 149隻 ,2005: 150 隻 ), 這 反 映 在 日 本 越 冬 的 琵 鷺 種 群 較 穩 定 ( 表 7)。 最 大 的 群 落 是 位於 九 州 島 福 岡 縣 今 津 干 潟 , 共 錄 得 24 隻 琵 鷺 , 而 其 他 地 點 即 有 數 目 較 少 的 族 群 ( 表1)。韓 國是 次 普 查 在 濟 州 島 錄 得 21 隻 琵 鷺 , 和 上 年 的 數 目 一 樣 。 從 九 十 年 代 起 , 黑 臉 琵鷺 的 數 字 介 乎 14 至 29 隻 ( 表 8) 之 間 , 證 明 越 冬 數 目 相 當 穩 定 。[ 泰 國普 查 期 間 在 泰 國 沒 有 琵 鷺 紀 錄 。 過 去 兩 個 冬 季 都 有 一 至 兩 隻 未 成 年 的 黑 臉 琵 鷺 在泰 國 灣 被 記 錄 。]菲 律 賓今 年 沒 有 琵 鷺 在 普 查 期 間 錄 得 。2005 年 12 月 在 Batanes 島 有 1 隻 黑 臉 琵 鷺 , 在這 之 前 的 三 年 亦 是 有 一 隻 的 記 錄 , 顯 示 這 隻 很 可 能 是 經 常 到 訪 的 。 菲 律 賓 過 去 很少 機 會 錄 得 琵 鷺 , 近 年 的 記 錄 顯 示 與 琵 鷺 數 量 增 長 有 關 。總 結黑 臉 琵 鷺 的 數 目 能 穏 定 上 升 , 並 在 這 次 普 查 超 過 1,600 隻 , 總 數 的 平 均 增 長 為 15%( 表 9)。 這 個 增 長 率 能 幫 助 這 種 群 由 1990 年 初 的 數 量 少 回 復 過 來 , 為 拯 救 這 全 球瀕 危 物 種 遠 離 滅 絕 起 著 鼓 舞 的 作 用 。以 下 列 出 十 個 重 要 的 越 冬 棲 息 地 , 數 目 於 不 少 全 球 已 知 總 數 的 1% ( 即 17 隻 ), 它們 有 :• 台 灣 台 南 曾 文 溪 口 , 包 括 七 股 及 四 草 - 815 隻 (48.5%),
