Explain shortly (!!!) <strong>the</strong> following terms. Use <strong>the</strong> <strong>structures</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> examples above.<br />

<strong>1.</strong> Head: Main part <strong>of</strong> a phrase, which determines <strong>the</strong> category <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> phrase.<br />

2. Phrasal Projection: <strong>The</strong> head determines <strong>the</strong> category <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> phrase and <strong>the</strong> head<br />

projects ist category to <strong>the</strong> phrase.<br />

3. Adjunct: A constituent bearing additional information. It need not to be realized, it is<br />

facultative.<br />

4. Constituent: A head (and ist argument) form a constituent. It is part in a bigger<br />

structure.<br />

5. Argument: An Argument <strong>of</strong> a category is a constituent which belongs to <strong>the</strong> core<br />

meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> category.<br />

6. Complement: A complement <strong>of</strong> a head X is ist sister YP. It is <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> an XP.<br />

(5 points for each term � 30 points).
