The story is famous in Arabic literatureas well as in Arab folk stories. In this paper, the poems of Quasis are analyzed <strong>and</strong> made a diagnosis of organic heart diseasefrom his complaints. “Love” in the history of medicine is described <strong>and</strong> decided to summarize it for Heart views.Key Words, Majnoon Lila, Love Sickness, Love in Arabic <strong>and</strong> <strong>Islamic</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong>, Love in Greek <strong>Medicine</strong>.Case <strong>History</strong>A 30-year-old male poet, desert dweller calledQais, complained that intense love was driving himto madness.At the age of ten, while taking his family goatherdto a grass area at the periphery of his town, he met agirl of his age, who also was taking her family’s goatsto graze. The girl was a relative named Lila. She wasfrom his town. After several such a daily meetingsover several months, he fell in love with her. Herecalled those early days in one of his poems:I fell in love with herWhen she was smallHer breasts did not budAs her playmates could recallThat day was remoteBut tears choked my throatWhen I rememberedHow we tended a small goatOur love, like us, grewIt is old, it is new;I wish neither of us grew,Nor did the goats tooAs Lila grew older she was not allowed to grazethe goats. Qais used to visit Lila while she was sittingwith the other girls of the neighborhood.One day Qais rode his camel <strong>and</strong> went to visit Lila<strong>and</strong> her girlfriends in an open area near the town.Qais was a poet but wrote only love poems. He recitedhis poem to the girls. When the girls got hungry,he butchered his camel <strong>and</strong> sat up a fire. Lila helpedhim cut the meat. While he was talking to Lila <strong>and</strong>cutting the meat, he cut his h<strong>and</strong>. She took the knifefrom his h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> tied his wound with a piece fromher cloth. He was totally unaware of the cut <strong>and</strong> didnot feel pain. Lila chose a piece of meat over the firefor herself. She asked Qais to see if the meat wascooked. He stretched his bare h<strong>and</strong> in the fire, turning<strong>and</strong> examining the piece of meat without feelingthe heat. Lila had to pull his h<strong>and</strong> out of the fire.Lila also loved Qais. Once, Qais’ father sent himto Lila’s house to ask for some oil for guests. Qaiscarried out his father’s request with pleasure. Hisuncle, Lila’s father, ordered Lila to pour oil for Qais.While she was pouring from their container to Qais’container, they were talking <strong>and</strong> they forgot whatthey were doing. So, most of the oil spilled <strong>and</strong>soaked their feet over the s<strong>and</strong>.Qais’ love poems for Lila spread all over theirtown. Lila’s father was unhappy with the exposure ofhis daughter as a love figure in Qais’ poems. Arab traditiondoes not view a girl praised in poems withrespect. When Qais’ father asked Lila’s father theh<strong>and</strong> of Lila for Qais, he refused. He considered itshameful to allow his daughter to marry a man whohad written poems about her. He forbade his daughterfrom seeing Qais. He obtained a proclamation thatQais may be killed if he met with Lila. Qais cried day2 JISHIM 2003, 2
