Ayurveda is an alternative medicalapplication. We know some terms <strong>and</strong> concepts aboutthis subject.Ayurveda 1. The Indian philosophy that forms thebasis for ayurvedic medicine; although the termsayurveda <strong>and</strong> ayurvedic medicine are often used interchangeably,the former is more global <strong>and</strong> includesboth the ayurvedic philosophy <strong>and</strong> those componentsof ayurveda that are applied in modern ayurvedic medicine;the major branches of ayurveda incorporatedinto current ayurvedic medicine are internal medicine,geriatrics, aphrodisiac medicine, <strong>and</strong> panckbakarma;the other branches of ayurveda-ophthalmology otorhinolaryngology,psychiatry, psychotherapy, pediatrics,surgery, <strong>and</strong> toxicology, have been largely ab<strong>and</strong>onedin favor of the Western versions of these fields (1).Ayurvedic healing means Ayurvedic medicine.Ayurvedic herbal medicine Ayurvedic medicine,A therapeutic system based on the classification offoods <strong>and</strong> herbs into four groups: Energy-virya, tasterasa,postdigestive effect-vipaka, <strong>and</strong> potency-vipaka;specific herbs are used to increase or decrease thedoshas (kapha, pitta, <strong>and</strong> vata).Ayurvedic massage Abhyanga, Ayurvedic lymphaticmassage, marma therapy A form of massage,that stimulates spesific marma points, which areinvisible but palpable junction points between mind<strong>and</strong> matter, analogous to the pressure points inacupuncture; abhyanga is performed by touch <strong>and</strong>using special oils <strong>and</strong> transcendental meditation.Ayurvedic medicine Ayurveda, ayurvedic healing,ayurvedism, vedic healing, vedic medicineAlternative medicine Sanskrit, Ayur-Life, vedaknowledge,the oldest existing medical system in theworld, which is practiced by approximately 300 000physicians, primarily in the subcontinent of India;ayurvedic medicine encompasses aromatherapy, diet<strong>and</strong> nutrition, herbal medicine, massage, <strong>and</strong> vedicastrology; ayurvedic philosophy holds that disease iscaused by an imbalance of homeostatic <strong>and</strong> immunemechanisms related to three physiological priciplesor ‘doshas’ (2).DoshasVata Dosha Wind force, vata represents fluid <strong>and</strong>motion, <strong>and</strong> corresponds to the Western concepts ofcirculation <strong>and</strong> neuromuscular activity.Pitta Dosha Sun force, Pitta directs all metabolicactivities, energy exchange, <strong>and</strong> digestionKapha Dosha Moon force, Kapha representsstructure, cohesion <strong>and</strong> fluid balance <strong>and</strong>, when58 JISHIM 2003, 2
