16A Square ThinkingGood DynamicsSUPRA Ply - ’A Logical and Progressive Design’Audio cables’ performance is initially determined by their loopresistance (R) & inductance (L) & shunt capacitance (C). For mostspeakers R & L must be low, but capacitance value, C doesn’t matteras speakers already act as large cap loads. But simply using largerwire makes R low, at the expense of an increasing ratio to L withmusically unacceptable effects. Ways to make inductance L lowalso with low resistance, include tapes, either stacked or arrangedin ribbons. But these types are impractical to fit to nearly everyspeaker connector without discontinuities, & are stressed oftenunsightly when bends are required in real installs & also aren’tsuited to mobile uses. Litzing with multiple, insulated conductors ismore practical, but quality Litzes are expensive and termination noteasy. Other types are gross, like industrial pipes, unsuited to manydomestic spaces.Ply CombiConPly 2.0Ply 3.4PlyLoudspeakerCablesSimplistic fat conductors’ rising impedance (due to L) of +6dB/octave is further raised by internal eddy currents causing ’Skineffect’, like ’the square root of inductance’, adding. +3dB/oct, to theL-reactance slope. For typical cable runs, net inductivity is such thatperformance in heavy plain conductors is measurably affected withsteady signals just above 1kHz.Cables with copper or silver stranded conductors suffer fromcomplex oxidation. This causes energy storage/release cycles, thatregular tests miss, yet which is audible with music. Most audiograde cables’conductors are damaged by contamination, by plastic out-gassing,from the impure atmosphere, & liquid spills. Some are protected butonly by a thin coating that’ll one day crack with use and age. Fig.1 using a sweptsine wave shows progressively increasing losses >1kHz for allcables, caused by L & skin effect, ranging to 10dB at 20kHz- ultrasonic sounds do matter [3] ! A traditional cable can, however, not achievethat quality, due to the construction. A good interconnectmust have low capacitance and low skin-effect.The skin-effect has a dynamic and noticeable influencebecause an audio signal is nothing but variations offrequencies and sound levels. If we were to transfer only onestable frequency the skin-effect would not be any problem.The frequencies push the signal differently far out from thecentre of the conductor. High frequencies travel on thesurface whereas low frequencies travel inside the conductor.Thus, the higher the frequency, the higher the resistance.In order to minimize the skin-effect the EFF-I is designed inaccordance with Equalized Frequency Flow (EFF) Technique.It is based on tube shaped conductors with a wall thickness of0.20mm, which is well below the smallest skin depth withinthe Audio range. 50Connector pin out informationDirectionality AssuranceAll SUPRA cables are constructed withattention to consistent and equal ‘direction’in all the conductors. Simplistic electronicstheory says there is no ‘directionality’ inconductors, but assumes conductors areperfectly isomorphic.It also ignores the inherently directionalnature of signal and energy flow. Yetelectricity could not be sold without‘energy flow directionality’.In reality, practical conductors are drawnmany times - not cast. This createshighly elongated crystal structures. Thisin turn creates a physical (mechanical)directional feature or ‘axial polarity’.Annealing and also ‘burning-in’ processescan reduce the ‘strength’ of the ‘drawingimprint’, but only to a degree.All conductors in SUPRA cables areconsistently arranged to point ‘forwards,in the direction (left to right) impliedby the legend (text) printed on thecable jacket. Directional consistency isensured in two ways. First, direction ofthe conductors to be used in each cableis known from the spooled direction ofthe conductors received from the copperwire factory. That is a reliable methodbecause an efficient manufacturingprocess is consistent and omits randomre-spooling steps.Forward Thinking TechnologySecond, the ‘directionality’ of conductorsis now able to be measured, and SUPRAcables are the first in the world to benefitfrom a spectral technique developedby audio consultant Ben Duncan inconjunction with Jenving Technology AB.This employs some special test conditionswhich better approximate audio equipment’sreal-world usage than standard, puresignal sources. Test results show typicalincreases in harmonic (noise) levels0.5dB when cables are connected so theconductors’ drawn direction opposesthe signal flow direction. All SUPRA pre-made cablesare soldered with lead-free silver-tin with coppersolder and non-corrosive flux, available asMulticore TSC-96, which we recommend.The galvanic potential of silver is closer to copperthan is lead to copper and thus the galvanicpotential will be minimised.Poor solderings is mostly due to either too highor too low a temperature.Flux is needed to get through the oxide andavoid a dry joint, without overheating.A dry joint might work very well for a periodof time but as the oxide grows between the tinand the object, there will eventually be a poorconnection.
