Subsequently, joining the laboratories of flow cytology,immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics and molecular biology, he founded the centreof diagnostic immunopathology for tumours, addressed particularly to the studyand diagnosis of neoplasms in the area of haematological oncology. The centre,which was included in the regional health plan for the three-year period 1990-1992, has become the regional centre of excellence. This facility has, over theyears, developed both in terms of numbers of staff - not only pay-rolled, butincluding, amongst others, students from the faculties of medicine and biologypreparing their undergraduate dissertations or on postgraduate internships, andin terms of the acquisition of the latest cutting-edge technologies.

Promotor of the “Comprehensive Cancer Center” foundation of Turin's MolinetteHospital, named COES (Subalpine Centre for Oncology and Haematology)within whichCERMS (Centre for Research in Experimental Medicine) operates. The centre,opened on 21 st June 2001, referred to the Department of Oncology until 2004 andthereafter to the re-established Department of Anatomical Pathology: In thisdepartmental context, in 2006 the centre was placed in the hands of Prof.Giorgio Inghirami, firstly, head of the separate unit, and since November 2010,following Prof.Palestro's retirement, director of the Department of Anatomy andHistopathology. The running of CERMS is entrusted to the S. Giovanni Battista ofTurin Hospital Trust and also to the international research in experimentalmedicine foundation known as the “Fondazione Tumori Molinette” and establishedin 2001.Founder member of the “Lymphoma Study Group” established in 1981 under thedirection of Prof. K.Lennert.Member of the “International Academy of Pathology”; of the “Italian HaematologySociety”; of the “European Society of Pathology”; of the “European Associationfor Haemotopathology”. Member of the “European Lymphoma Study Group” since 1981.Member of the “Academy of Medicine of Turin” since 1983.Formerly, editor of the journals: “Cancer”, “European Journal of Haematology”,“Leukemia”. In 1981 he was fellow and visiting professor at the Institut fürPathologie at the University of Kiel (West Germany) directed by professor KarlLennert, with whose group there has been long-standing scientific collaboration.He is the author of approximately 250 scientific publications, almost all ininternational journals with impact factor, dealing in particular with neoplasticpathology in the field of haematological malignancies, (76 of the articles werepublished before he competed for full professorship), with a regular yearlyoutput and an average impact factor over the last 10 years of 4. he is theauthor of chapters in numerous monographs on Anatomical Pathology andOncological Pathology.
