Fixed <strong>DDD</strong>s are assigned <strong>for</strong> combinations. These <strong>DDD</strong>s are based<br />

on an average dose regimen of three times daily, <strong>and</strong> dosages in the<br />

upper area of the recommended dose ranges are chosen. The<br />

strengths of the various components are not taken into<br />

consideration. E.g. 6 UD (= 30 ml) is the fixed <strong>DDD</strong> <strong>for</strong> products<br />

where the recommended dose is 5-10 ml.<br />

R05C EXPECTORANTS, EXCL. COMBINATIONS WITH COUGH<br />

SUPPRESSANTS<br />

This group comprises preparations with expectorants <strong>and</strong> mucolytics.<br />

Combined preparations are classified at separate 5th levels using the<br />

code number 10. These may also contain bronchodilating agents,<br />

antihistamines etc.<br />

Preparations, which contain small amounts of herbal extracts, menthol<br />

etc., are regarded as plain preparations.<br />

R05CA Expectorants<br />

R05CB Mucolytics<br />

All combined products of expectorants are classified in R05CA10.<br />

Mesna in i.v. <strong>for</strong>mulations used <strong>for</strong> the prophylaxis of urothelial toxicity<br />

is classified in V03AF. Mesna used as a mucolytic agent (e.g.<br />

administered by a nebuliser) is classified here.<br />

All combined products of mucolytics are classified in R05CB10.<br />

Combinations with xanthines are classified in R03DA.<br />

Combinations with antiinflammatory agents are classified in M01.<br />

For acetylcysteine, the <strong>DDD</strong> <strong>for</strong> inhalation solution is higher than<br />

<strong>for</strong> the oral <strong>for</strong>mulation, due to differences in the dosages<br />

recommended.
