Matthews, Class <strong>of</strong> 1982, is pleased<strong>to</strong> report that his daughter is a second yearlaw student at the University <strong>of</strong> Richmond inVirginia. His wife, Meg, works for USAir inLexing<strong>to</strong>n, Ky. Jim, who maintains a privatepractice in general ophthalmology in Lexing<strong>to</strong>n,is the president <strong>of</strong> the Kentucky Academy <strong>of</strong> EyePhysicians and Surgeons.Samuel R. Davis, Class <strong>of</strong> 1983, who is semiretired,is co-direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong>Radiology at Montgomery General Hospital inMontgomery, W.Va. He has been there since hecompleted his residency in 1987. Sam occasionallydoes a week or so <strong>of</strong> locum tenens <strong>to</strong> cover otherradiologists’ vacations at different hospitals inthe area. He and his wife, Julie, consider theirhome address <strong>to</strong> be in Day<strong>to</strong>na Beach Shores,Fla. They have a condo in Ohio near Cincinnatias well as one in Charles<strong>to</strong>n where they livewhen he is working in Montgomery. They travelquite a bit and enjoy spending time with their7-pound Yorkshire terrier, Phoebe.W. Doug Given, Class<strong>of</strong> 1983, practices familymedicine at Brax<strong>to</strong>n HealthAssociates Inc. in Sut<strong>to</strong>n,W.Va. He and his wife, MaryLouise, have three children,Mary Elizabeth, Laura Maeand William Daniel. They reside in StrangeCreek, W.Va.Robert A. Hess, Class <strong>of</strong> 1984, has opened a newfamily practice <strong>of</strong>fice in Jackson, Ohio. He andhis wife, Jannell, celebrated their 29th weddinganniversary in March. Their son, Jonathan, hasbeen accepted <strong>to</strong> the next <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong>class, and their daughter, Stephanie, is in the 11thgrade at Hunting<strong>to</strong>n High. She plays first seed onthe tennis team and was selected <strong>to</strong> represent theschool at a National Youth Leadership meetingin Washing<strong>to</strong>n this April.Danny M. Phillips, Class <strong>of</strong> 1987, after almost 20years in emergency medicine, plans <strong>to</strong> retire fromactive practice and open RoxboroMedAccess,the first Urgicare Center in Roxboro, N.C. Thepractice, which will open in late summer, willfocus on acute care and minor emergencies,but will also have a component <strong>of</strong> occupationalmedicine as well as primary care. MedAccess willbe the focus practice in a small medical park heis developing.P. Mitchell Charles, Class<strong>of</strong> 1988, has been recognizedas a “Hero <strong>of</strong> Emergency<strong>Medicine</strong>” by the AmericanCollege <strong>of</strong> EmergencyPhysicians (ACEP). Theaward, which is part <strong>of</strong> ACEP’s40th anniversary, recognizesemergency physicians whohave made significant contributions <strong>to</strong> theirfield, <strong>to</strong> their communities, and <strong>to</strong> their patients.Dr. Charles is an emergency physician at CabellHunting<strong>to</strong>n Hospital and direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> the MS-4Clerkship in Emergency <strong>Medicine</strong>. He is alsoa faculty sponsor <strong>of</strong> the Emergency <strong>Medicine</strong>Interest Group at Marshall’s <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong>.He reviews articles for Annals <strong>of</strong> Emergency<strong>Medicine</strong> and AAMC, and currently serves asthe West Virginia ACEP chapter president. Hehas received the American Heart Association’s“Legacy <strong>of</strong> Life” award, the WVACEP “Excellencein Emergency <strong>Medicine</strong>” award and numerousteaching awards. His passion for emergencymedicine has dramatically increased the number
