Wilburn grew up near Holden Hospital in Holden,W.Va., and knew many doctors in his neighborhood. Their son, Mark, is a graduate ofWest Virginia University School of Medicine and has a family practice near Fayetteville, W.Va.Their daughter, Carole, is a surgical nurse in North Carolina.“I have always known the value of medicine and the need for good doctors and nurses,”Wilburn said. “I felt the Marshall University School of Medicine was a good place to helpout.”As a retired accountant for Southern Public Service Company in Salem, Va., Wilburnhas been financially comfortable since he retired. Because of their commitment to the fieldof medicine, he and his wife chose to make a charitable rollover gift from their IRA to TheMarshall University Foundation Inc., designated for the School of Medicine. This gift not onlyhelps the school’s endowment, but is a way of reducing taxes for the Whites.
