EDITORIAL...Kishor Bhimji ShahMedia & CommunicationChairpersonEditor - Oshwal NewsJai JinendraPranam & Namo ArihantanamTo produce a regular and consistentlyprofessional magazine requires an underlyingvision, enthusiasm, commitment, a dedicatedteam and sheer hard work. Producing each Issueis a mammoth task, as this involves planning, research, writing articles, design, graphics, typesetting, proofreading, co-ordinating with mycolleagues on the Executive Committee, all nineareas, dealing with members, advertisers andprinters, as well as working to strict deadlines.Believe me, this does entail many late nights aswell as taking days off work to ensure each issueis completed on schedule. I take this opportunityto thank my sisters, who are part of my team fortheir assistance and support. In all the Issues to date, I have included all thereports, circulars forwarded by the Areas andmembers of the Executive Committee. In each Issue, I have also endeavoured toinclude informative, interesting, insightful andthought provoking material and articles across abroad spectrum of topics, some of which are lifechanging, speak to the soul and occasionallytouch the heart. I have also includedcontemporary articles on our Jain faith and theJain Way of Life, not only to increase ourunderstanding but also to foster spiritualdevelopment and greater enthusiasm to selfdiscovermore about our faith and the Jain Wayof Life. I am pleased and delighted to say thatmany many members have complimented us onthe content of material in each Issue and in-facthave received many requests for some of thearticles to be translated from English to Gujaratiand vice-versa.I apologise that members in some areas receivedthe Diwali Issue late due to the backlog followingthe postal strike.Time stands still for no-one, and yet again, another year is fast coming to the end. For theAssociation, it has been another challenging andmemorable year with many highlights asmentioned by our President in his message. There is much that we as a community can beproud of but we also have to acknowledge thereare many challenges facing us. We as anAssociation have now to be proactive and startdiscussions to develop ideas and plans that notonly cater for our immediate needs but alsoanticipates the future needs of our community. In the first few months of the new year, electionswill take place to elect new committees both atArea and Executive level. This is an idealopportunity for all members to participate and toensure that forward looking, enthusiastic andcommitted committees are elected. Anorganisation will only flourish if new memberscome forward and are then given the opportunityto present and carry out new ideas. Our Association was formed by far sightedpioneer members to foster cultural, educationand social activities as well in the main to extendour rich Jain heritage to present and futuregenerations. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE...Jai JinendraThis year has been very exciting and challenging for Oshwal Association ofthe U.K. During the year lots of events have taken place, with thecompletion of our Jinalay the main highlight. In August 2007, the DeraserInauguration Ceremonies took place and was another milestone in thehistory of our Association and all the Jains. We witnessed two veryauspicious days when the weather, the planning and the organisation ransmoothly, and with the help of our valued volunteers brought together atruly memorable occasion. Once again, I thank all those who participatedin the events and all the members, friends and guests who attended. This was followed by the start of Paryushan Mahaparva in September which was celebrated withimmense dedication. Collectively, my fellow Office Bearers and I managed to cover all of the areas forat least one of the days. It is heart warming to see our younger Oshwal’s participating in Pratikramanand with a record number of Tapasvi’s this year, it is clear that our faith has a strong foundation and abright future. On 23 rd September 2007, North West Area held their Swamivatsalya Bhojan combinedwith Dhaja Din. Again on this day we were blessed with good weather and a large number of devoteeswere present for the ceremonies.Chaatrii Maas Aymbel Oli was celebrated in March, when for the first time Prasad was distributed at allthe Area’s Gujarati school to mark the occasion of Mahavir Janmakalyanak and I am grateful to theReligious Sub Committee for organising this as well as the pooja in June 2007 when many devoteesattended.Three days of Diwali celebrations were held at Oshwal Centre, starting with Chopda Pujan on Friday. Thiswas followed by a folk dance and magic show by Rangilo Rajasthani group from India on Saturdayevening. On Sunday, despite the cold weather, there was a large turn out at Oshwal Centre when manypeople had the opportunity to participate in the Aarti at regular intervals inside the Deraser. Once againI would like to thank the Culture & Heritage, Jinalay and Religious Committees and all the volunteers forall their hard work during these three days.Apart from these events, I have had the pleasure of representing OAUK by attending events such as theJaina Convention in New Jersey in July, launch of the Jain manuscript at Buckingham Palace in Maywhere I was honoured to meet Prince Philip, Diwali celebrations at Trafalgar Square in October where Iwas delighted to meet Mr. Ken Livingstone. In the first week of November I also had the pleasure tomeet the Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the House of Commons. All these dignitaries have expressedkeen interest in visiting the Centre and view the Deraser. The Derasar is now virtually complete. We have a few minor matters to resolve which are in hand andwill be completed shortly. It is pleasing that the centre is now regularly visited by Scout Groups, schools, universities and colleges as well as a number of other interested groups who have all been toview the Derasar and Jinalay Complex and all have been highly complimentary. Together, we havecreated a focal point for the Jain Faith here in the UK. I urge you all to visit the Derasar, bring yourfamily and friends and regularly take part in devotional pujas. The New Year will see preparations for All Area’s AGM’s and Elections, followed by the ExecutiveCommittee’s AGM where elections for the new Executive Committee shall take place in April 2008. Iencourage you all to attend your local area AGM’s and participate in the forthcoming elections and I urgethe younger members to take active roles in the Area Committee’s and bring new ideas. It is by workingtogether that we can take this community forward.Once again, on behalf of the fellow Office Bearers, Executive Committee members and the AreaCommittees, it is the ideal time to express gratitude to those who have helped us wherever we haveneeded them the most. I feel immensely privileged to serve the Association and would like to conveysincere best wishes for a peaceful, prosperous and a healthy 2008.Jai OshwalAshwin Dharamshi ShahPresident OAUKOSHWAL NEWS - WINTER 2007 & NEW YEAR’S ISSUE PAGE 5

The purpose was for the benefit of themembers and together we ALL assisted in the running of this great Associationof ours.In more recent years, we as members have become too comfortable andperhaps a little complacent with our lives to be an integral part of theAssociation. We have often heard “What is the Association doing for me”, whenin reality, as Jain’s, our motto should be “WHAT CAN WE DO FOR THEASSOCIATION”. It is only through joint effort and hard work from all of us, wecan progress even further and be PROUD TO BE AN OSHWAL.With this spirit in mind we have decided to re-form the “Oshwal VolunteersGroup” whereby a group of Individuals will contribute 2 hours of their time eachmonth to assist us in a wide variety of General Duties. Working together we canimprove our facilities and actively contribute to our Association. This group will mostly meet on the LAST SUNDAY of each month at 8.30ambut any changes will be notified to you (if registered with us). Refreshments willbe served thereafter and you can be home by midday to spend time with yourfamily.TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, SO PLEASE COME ANDVOLUNTEER JUST 2 HOURS EACH MONTH AND BE AN INTEGRALPART OF THE ASSOCIATION. And I willsay now we were not at all disappointed – a show whereencores were given and in the second part Maya broughtthe curtain down. Great show Maya? Thank you to myEast Area committee friends – we had a wonderful timeand a great night. As is our good Oshwal practice the first part of theprogramme opened to the 326 paid audience with recitalof our Navakar Mantra from Haridan Gadhvi and hisgroup. He then slowly started intense delivery of words, and music with a lot of spinning wit. This show was morecharacterised by traditional Dairo and folk songs. After the end of this performance there was a short breakfor Raffle draw. There were fabulous prizes won by fivelucky winners. One of which was donated by PravinbhaiDharamshi Mepa Shah of ‘Mausum’, Stanmore. ThereCAPTIVATED AUDIENCEwas a tea biscuits interval. The tea was so refreshing .Theconsensus of opinion of people who drank this tea paidcompliments to the tea makers of this high quality andtasty beverage. East Area also appreciates the kindunsolicited donation of £101.25 received from KantibhaiHaria of In House Kitchens Wembley. Thank youKantibhai for your good heart and East Area appreciatesyour kind generosity. In the second part we were presented to Mrs MayaDeepak Panchal of Ahmedabad who gave good –humoured professional performance for nearly 1 ½ hours. There was a lot ofdelightful singingbacked by this localyoung Master ShikunjBarot with tuning ofpounding tabla and herGuru playing Manjira.Maya encouraged theaudience to clap theirhands amidst hermesmerising melodies.Maya strummed herway through many oldfavourites and also in SHIKUNJ BAROTthe end followed by a masterful rendition of ‘aye merepyare watan…’ in response to many request from thefloor. This one was a touching meditation flecked bypersonal memories by Harish Shah of Harringay in lovingmemory of his late wife Chandni .The sense of thissentimental singing from the deep within the body ofhumanity was a fitting tribute to Chandni and all our lovedones. Chandni was a very special person who did somuch for others. The touch of Oshwal Patriotism wasseen when everyone in the hall stood up to pay theirrespects.Maya dressed in a simple saree but her cultured voicemade the show energetic and there is no denying thatMaya was a great Oshwal entertainer. Audience reactedgenerously at the close of the night specially to thebreathtaking skills of local 15 year old tablaplayer whose unwavering intensity was reallyentertaining. It is pity that 40 confirmation bookingsmembers did not turn up and another 70people who cancelled within 5 days ofperformance had to miss out on this OshwalHouse relaxed traditional atmosphere EastArea great event. 110 people missed out aOSHWAL NEWS - WINTER 2007 & NEW YEAR’S ISSUE PAGE 13

I couldn’t believe it when ourparents kept bidding. As our mum put it, “I had avoice inside me telling me to bid and not let go…”Jaini said “Every year we sit in the ‘audience’,singing and applauding as the brightly dressedparticipants perform this Aarti; it looks interestingand fun, but we are just watching from the sidelinesand not understanding the true meaning behind itand why it is significantThis year we were lucky enough to be the participants of the Aarti and asNishad and Khilna put it, “you can only really understand the value ofsomething if you are involved in it”.The evening of the Aarti came…family and friends joined to make aprocession. We were all quite nervous as we did not know what toexpect! The doors opened…all eyes on us. My brother (snake charmer)and I (cobra) started enacting a story whereby positive energy (snakecharmer) overcomes negative energy (cobra). Himatmasa explained "bylooking at the fight of karma satya and dharma satya, I experienced thepower of karma and dharma in my own life...”Before and during the Aarti, the music and clear explanations provided by the Tapovan guests fromIndia were fantastic and really helped our understanding about whomKumarpar Raja was and some stories behind this celebration.Bharti and Jayaben said “itwas fulfilling that the rest ofthe community were able tojoin in by performing theirown Aarti’s, and the musicwas so uplifting that it leadmany to do Raas Garba andreally feel the spiritualenthusiasm.”Looking at our dad’s face, we could tell he was privileged to be able to doKumarpar Rajani Aarti. The evening was extremely memorable for us and we will be carrying thewarm feeling of it with us throughout our lives.SpiritualEnthusiasm...BYPARAS &NEIL JAYENDRA SHAHVNVNVNVNVNVNVNVNVNVNVNVPAGE 26OSHWAL NEWS - WINTER 2007 & NEW YEAR’S ISSUE

The Dirty BowlOnce a devotee asked his Guru, “Blessed Guru, youare full of compassion. Please give me the gift ofspiritual knowledge . I am tired of the miseries ofthe world. I want to seek liberation.”The Guru said, “O student, spiritual knowledge issacred. It cannot be imparted to one who isunqualified. Practice spiritual discipline under myguidance. When your heart is purified, you willreceive illumination.”But the student persisted, “I want to attainliberation now. O Guru, please be kind to me. You areso compassionate, I cannot understand how you cankeep the knowledge secret from me.”The Guru replied, “I shall explain this tomorrow whenI come to ask for food from your house.”The next day, the student prepared the mostdelicious dishes for his Guru. Sometime later, theGuru came with his bowl, and asked the student tofill his bowl with food. The student happily broughtvarious types of delicious food and when he preparedto pour them into the Guru’s bowl, he found theinside of bowl very dirty and foul-smelling.He stopped and said to his Guru, “Guruji, I mustclean this bowl first. Otherwise, this delicious foodwill be spoiled.”The Guru said, “Please do not bother to clean thisbowl. I am so hungry, why don’t you give me the foodnow?”The student said, “It is not right to spoil this food. Ihave prepared it with great care, difficulty anddevotion. I have to clean your bowl before servingyou the food.”The Guru smiled and said, “That is what I wanted toexplain to you about the sacred knowledge. Just likethe bowl, your heart is not purified. Just like it isnot possible for you to pour ordinary food unto anunclean bowl, similarly it is difficult for me to pourthe spiritual food into your heart.”And he continued, “Therefore, be patient until yourheart is purified. Then you will receive theimmortalising food of wisdom.”The student understood his Guru and bowed his headand asked for his blessing. …. HEALTH ...BRAINPowerAs we get older we tend to forget things. Our abilities to concentrate or recall many things maydecline. However, we get wiser because the basic creativity, insight into complex situations, andthe ability to evaluate situations accurately may actually improve with passing years. EXPERIENCEIS THE BEST TEACHER. So, what is reward for getting older - time makes us wiser and morecreative. As we get older, we usually struggle more frequently to come up with the right word or name. Weeven call our child with other sibling’s name. We take longer to learn new information or skills.Remembering to do some pre assigned task in the future becomes less reliable. We become lessattentive, our power of concentration declines - we are more distracted by irrelevant information orloose focus on the task at hand.We can ward off these age-related changes by practising good health habits and exercising ourmind. Participate in cognitive exercises designed to boost reasoning skills, memory and mental. Wecan also challenge our minds at home with activities such as crossword puzzles, math games andSudoku. In addition, we can also read materials that take us out of our mental comfort zone. Itdoes not hurt to learn new skills; which will keep our mind challenged.STEPS TO IMPROVE MEMORY⇒⇒⇒⇒⇒Aerobic exercise boosts circulation - theflow of blood and oxygen to the brain, which enhances mental performanceSleep is crucial for brain functions. You cantake following steps to enhance the qualityof your sleep time:Exercise during the day (not close to thebed time)Eat early enough so dinner is digestedbefore snoozing offAvoid caffeine after lunch⇒ Get plenty of sun exposure during middayto keep your body’s sleep-wake clock insynch.⇒ Eat brain boosting food; fruits andvegetables are best due to antioxidantsand nutrients that⇒ protect the brain and body.⇒ To prevent stress, practice deep breathingexercises a few times a day⇒ Practice some form of relaxation techniquelike yoga, meditation or tai chiKeep the aging Brain SharpParticipate in mind games - Puzzles, word games and other mind buildersHHHIIIHHHIIIHHHIIIHHHIIIAUCHITYA:Doing what is appropriate (uchit) as per the situation and time.VIVEKDRASHTI:Knowing the difference between right and wrongKnowing what is worth leaving (heya), worth knowing (gneya)and worth achieving (upadeya)SATTVA:Conviction and courage to stand up for what is right.Defend the truth without getting carried away by popular opinion.PAGE 40OSHWAL NEWS - WINTER 2007 & NEW YEAR’S ISSUE

GRATITUDE ...Gratitude is not just etiquette but a natural wayof celebrating life. When expressed inspontaneous ways, gratitude helps restore peace, awe, and a sense of well-being in your life.GRATITUDE AND ENDORPHINSStudies have demonstrated that when we are inthe mode of gratitude there is release ofendorphins in the brain. Endorphins are chemicalsreleased by the brain cells which act as natural‘pain killers’. They enhance our sense of wellbeing and boost our immune system. The focuson gratitude could also give you the ‘high’ in life, that people get by using any drugs and othersubstances.Gratitude expressed from the heart and sincerityis yet to break a relationship, whether it is atwork or home. Focus on gratitude helps to glueand cement the relationship leading to love andintimacy. In this day and age where violence is soprevalent, any act which stimulates love andcompassion is worth over and above the violenceexhibited.JAINISM AND GRATITUDESince Jainism firmly believes in the doctrine ofkarma, the prayers are deep expression ofgratitude, appreciation and adoration of thevirtues possessed by the liberated souls orArihants and the expression of ardent desire toachieve these virtues in one’s own actual life. TheNamokar Mantra and Jain scriptures have actuallyenumerated the virtues of different categories ofsouls such as Arihanta, Siddha, Acarya,Upadhyaya and Sadhu.I believe and have learnt that the practice ofJainism is living in gratitude moment to moment. We study the path shown by those who haveachieved liberation with utmost respect andsincerity, because it is the proven path, whichthey have actually taken during their lives andhave obtained the results. We feel very thankfulto these great souls for providing us such usefulguidance. Therefore, in prayer we express ourgratitude, extol and enumerate their virtues andwish that such virtues might also develop in ourlife. Such prayers constantly reminds us whatmade them great and in turn help us to developsuch virtues in us. In Jain philosophy, this is theprocess of reverence and celebration of life.Like dharma dhyana which takes our mind awayfrom artta (pain) and raudra (cruel and harsh)dhyana, which causes the accumulation of thekarmas, and are the degrading forces to the self.Having an attitude of gratitude keeps focused onthe goodness of life and living and our potentialto enrich and enhance life moment to momentand constitutes the best type of Satsanga, which leads us to right path to realise the Truth. From an article by Mandakini Pokharna, MD, USAHHHHIIHHH‘TAKING ACTION’...Today people are logical and independentthinkers. They want answers to these questions.Jainism promotes detachment from the actionsyou take. It does not preach the abandoning ofthose actions themselves. Tirthankar Mahavirsaid, “Asam Ca Chandam Ca Viginca Dhire” -“wise people give up their desires andattachments yet continue to do good”.Jainism is about taking action. It is about findingfulfilment through one’s good deeds. TirthankarRishabhdev, in this avarpini kal (regressive halfcycle), was the first promoter of purusharth -taking action. He first taught people how to workand then he instructed them in religion. In otherwords, work is essential. Deeds are indissolublylinked with life and creation. If along with thedoing of deeds the mind is awakened by religiousteachings, then those deeds become purebecause they are being performed without anydesire for reward in return. That alone makesthem effective and inspirational. They becomegood deeds. As such deeds are emulated, goodwill spreads like a chain reaction. Actionsperformed with detachment do not bind, ratherthey open the door for liberation. If abstainingfrom action were sufficient to extinguish karmicconsequences, then why were we asked topractice actions like fasting, meditation, ritualscharity and other such cardinal virtues? Why didwe need to establish religious orders at all? Atone time you could just go into jungle and gainliberation through solitary meditation there, butJainism has not accepted the abnegation of actionas religion, rather it has asked us to keep a tastefor doing things, whilst remaining detached fromthe results of our actions. P REPARING FOR SILENCEOne of the true gifts in a busy life is an extended period ofsilence, a time when we intentionally turn our attention awayfrom the rush of conversation and commitments, images andmessages, and lists and obligations, and quietly attuneourselves to an inner space.♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦For some of us, imposed silence has been a punishment inour past, for example, a parent may have admonished, “closeyour mouth and go to your room.” The silence we areentering here is a choice. This silence is a chance fordiscovery, to find out new and different things. The absenceof talk is quite different when we are choosing not to speak.Silence is not a lack of communication. There is a subtlelanguage that connects us to one another through the eyes, with a smile, or a gesture. Fluency inthis subtle language calls for our ability to observe the small details of life. As we develop our facilitywith this subtle language, we find that we are less dependent on the mechanical devices that canconnect us but that can also make us feel more separate. In moving into an inner space of silence, we are attuning ourselves to the spirit of nature and lettinggo of the tendency to be critical.Silence provides the opportunity for me to identify the qualities in myself that have the capacity totransform me. In silence I can connect to the highest quality of my lightest, clearest thinking.Action emerges from the seeds of thought. Actions are the fruits of these seeds. What is the soil inwhich I choose to plant the seeds of my thoughts? Violence or peace? Anger or love? These choicesare transformative. The state of awareness I attain in silence connects directly to the quality of my understanding.Understanding “in sound” is a cognitive process, while understanding “in silence” is more subtle, resulting in realisations that emerge from within. These are very different experiences. In silence I discover my innate qualities, the qualities that are intrinsic to who I am. Here in silenceI touch my eternal self, and I come to trust this deepest essence. The experience of recognising my intrinsic and unique qualities increases my own power to receive. In silence I touch my inner strength and experience trust, faith, safety, beauty, worthiness. It isfrom this base of inner strength that my actions evolve. In silence I can listen to the call of God, the call of nature, the call of others in need.Silence is an inner space of learning. When I do not understand something, I continue to hold on toit. When learning occurred, I can release it and move on.In silence I discover truth by getting in touch with the true self. Silence increases my capacity tohold the truth within.Silence is an opportunity to rest in the lap of my own greatness. Remember to care for yourself withthe special attention you would accord any great soul.Use these thoughts about silence as a tray of hors d’oeuvres, picking what you want to supportyou, as you transition into a silent inner space.By BK Mohini PanjabiSilence & self control is non violenceSilence - what a beautiful word. Take an hour for yourself at least once a week.Go exercise your body and mind. SVADHYAYA (SELF STUDY)The simple meaning of Svadhyaya is ‘to study’. The word Svadhyaya consists of two words - Sva (self)and Adhyaya ( study). As nutritious food is necessary to maintain a healthy body, Svadhyaya andcontemplation are necessary to keep our mind and emotions healthy. Svadhyaya is for all, regardlessof one’s level of knowledge, spiritual progress, intelligence, grasping power or memory power. It isincomparable and indispensable which yields immediate rewards. Svadhyaya is considered as one ofthe most important daily internal penances - six essentials (Avashyaka) - in Jainism as knowledge isessential for spiritual growth, which in turn has the most impact on our thought pattern, outlook, values and behaviour. Svadhyaya is one of the least painful and most rewarding penances, yet, unfortunately most of us do not practice it effectively in our daily lives.Traditionally, there are five aspects of Svadhyaya:Vachana (Reading) : Studying and explaining the sacred texts and its meaning.Pruchchhana (Questioning) : Asking questions to clarify doubts.Anupresksha (Pondering over) : This is probably the most important, and includes contemplating, reflecting, digesting, absorbing and understanding any article or book that we are reading beforereading the next one.Paravartana (Repetition) : Repeating the texts and its meaning.Dharam-Katha (religious teaching) : Listening and engaging in spiritual discussions, inquiries ,teaching etc.SOME THOUGHTS ON SVADHYAYA:“ Without the light that comes from study, it isimpossible to rid oneself of the darkness ofignorance” ….. Acharya Amitagati“One should make a continous and zealous effortwith the mind, body and speech to study spiritualscriptures, ponder over them, contemplate on Souland then discuss and teach others”…… Acharya Amitagati“ How much time do we devote to study spiritualscriptures and articles on a daily basis?. Most of usspend our adult lives in dealing with the worldlyaffairs, allocating very little time to spiritualreading. Many of us put it off until retirement, whenwe may not develop interest in reading unless wehave cultivated the habit early on. Net result isthat many of us will never realise the value ofdiamonds treasured in our scriptures during ourlifetime. Regardless of our age and preoccupationwith our daily lives, we should try and spent sometime every day reading something spiritual with aproper understanding” ………..Anop Vora“ Svadhyaya is an elixir, which turns ignorance intowisdom and gives wise men the capability ofilluminating themselves as well as others”….. Pujya Gurudev Upadhyaya Shri Amar MunjiIf we make time to study the scriptures properly, we will have sound conviction that it is important topractise the teachings of our faith in our lives - to Live the Jain Way of Life. We will discover theinner self. The difference between our intentions and outward conduct will disappear.During 2008, let us all resolve to spend some time daily in self study. This can be done individually orwithin a study group, which can facilitate healthy debate and discussions. It also encourages thosewithin the group to study carefully in advanced the proposed topic and share knowledge amongst eachother. There are now many books available in English on Jainism.
