Wis. Masonic Youth Soccer
Camp and All-Star Games
What is it?
It is a free youth soccer camp hosted by the Masons of
Wisconsin. Kids attending the camp are middle school aged
kids (11-13 yrs. old) from families with limited resources
and are not able to afford soccer camps.
When we began the Wisconsin Masonic Youth Soccer
Camp 4 years ago, we had no idea how much of an integral
part of the Wisconsin Masonic Soccer Program it
would become.
As part of their camping experience the All-Stars work
with and watch over the youth campers.
The Youth campers learn form the All-Stars and coaches.
They learn more than just the game of soccer, they are also
introduced to what it takes to succeed not only in soccer,
but also in life. Of course, we also hope that the exposure
to the Masons gives them an additional group of positive
roll models as they learn what we as Masons do.
How it began
The Wisconsin Masonic Youth Camp began four years
ago.
At the time we had stopped going to the Shrine Hospital
and the Special Olympians were not able to participate in
many of the areas where we had the All-Star camps and
games. Also, The Wisconsin Masonic Soccer Foundation
was seen as a pass-through charity and was not eligible for
many potential funds. This created a desire to expand the
charitable aspects of the Wisconsin Masonic Soccer Foundation
beyond just hosting the All-Star Camp and Games.
The Masonic Soccer Committee got together and discussed
several possible options. Scholarships for college
kids, scholarships to soccer camps, and sponsoring soccer
clubs were a few of the thoughts.
Lightening struck, why don’t we have our own soccer
camp for kids who would not otherwise be able to attend
soccer camp (which can be very costly). Better yet, hook
them up with the best high school soccer players from all
over the state. The following July we hosted the first Wisconsin
Masonic Youth Soccer Camp.
The first year we invited 12 kids to join us at camp. We
brought in a high school coach to run the soccer clinics.
We also had two All-Stars come in a day early to work as
assistant coaches.
In 2012, 24 youth campers are invited to attend. Six
All-Stars will be there as assistant coaches and a high school
coach will lead the soccer clinics.
