<strong>Southern</strong> Serves!Many homes near campus remain affectedby the April 27 tornado in Apison,Tennessee. To demonstrate <strong>Southern</strong>’sheart for helping, this year’s “We Serve– Freshman Community Service Day”had a large storm cleanup component.Matthew Harris and 668 other freshmenspread out across the area, with almosta third of them assisting tornado victimsspecifically. “Truthfully, I didn’t want towork,” Matthew admits. “I was throwinga little tantrum in my mind until I felt Godtell me, ‘Relax Matt, be you.’ It was apretty good day.”2Columns

Once the storm passed,David Schilling, junior sports studies major, helped neighbors escape from carsand damaged houses. Later that week he wrote this account of his experience.David’s father, Bruce, is a professor in the Chemistry Department at <strong>Southern</strong>.I woke up Thursday morning and started takingpictures of the house and the devastation. I tookpictures of the other houses in our area andwent up to Clonts [Road] to figure out whathappened to everyone. That’s when I heardconfirmation of those people we couldn’t findbeing dead. The people on the other side of ourproperty were also dead. Later that day peoplefrom <strong>Southern</strong> showed up—teachers, students,and others—to cut the trees away from ourdriveway so we could get out.As it stands we are staying at <strong>Southern</strong>Village apartments [on the university campus]and have two rental cars from <strong>Southern</strong>. Wehave been getting food and stuff from a ton ofpeople who God has sent our way. Through thiswhole experience God has blessed us immensely.We haven’t been able to do much withthe house since we haven’t had the insurancepeople out yet, since they have thousands ofhouses to go. At <strong>Southern</strong>, community service is more than a reason to skip a day of classes in January; it’s a way ofliving. Whether students are planting churches, tutoring kids in inner-city schools, or working as volunteersacross the world from Uganda to the Philippines, many of them take time out of their busy lives to give backand help others.More than 500 participated this year in Community Service Day, 70 served as student missionaries acrossthe world, and hundreds gave up weekend hours to participate in one of the campus ministries.A vital part of the campus culture, service is even written into the university’s mission statement: “<strong>Southern</strong><strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>University</strong> as a learning community nurtures Christ-likeness and encourages the pursuit of truth,wholeness, and a life of service.” And it’s a mission that students across campus have taken to heart.Ganbare NipponLeroy Abrahams doesn’t usually cry.But once the videos started playing,it was tough for the junior biologymajor to keep from getting emotional.Hunched over his roommate’s computer,he first saw YouTube clips of theaftermath of Japan’s deadly 9.0 magnitudeearthquake and the devastatingtsunami that followed.“Seeing people screaming and jumpingin their cars to get away—these arepeople who live like we do in the U.S.,and they’rein such adesperatesituation,”the 21-yearoldsays. “Itreally struckme.”The images stayed with Leroy fordays, but it took a Sunday morningphone conversation with his mom severaldays later for the details of a plan tostart coming together.“It sort of dawned on me, ‘I’m thecommunity service director [for theStudent Association], and I have extramoney in my budget. I could use myposition to organize students to dosomething about it.’”That Friday was Asian Club vespers,and Asian Night was just around thecorner; why not raise money for disasterrelief at those two events?“This has given students a chance tosee that they can have an impact…We’re getting trained to shine ourlight to people around the world.”He talked to Asian Club PresidentKeri Mau, and it turned out she’d beenthinking the same thing.The two sprung into action, launchinga campaign titled “Ganbare Nippon,”which is Japanese for “Don’t GiveUp, Japan.”After hearing testimonies from someof <strong>Southern</strong>’s Japanese students andwatching a documentary by KristineBarker, senior film production major,students donated $1,100 during a loveoffering at Asian vespers.“When we showedthe documentary atvespers, some of theresponses were overwhelming;some peopledonated all of themoney in their wallets,”Keri says. “TheLord really blessed.”The next evening a donation box atAsian Night brought in an additional$2,700.Through the end of the school year,student leaders like Leroy and Keri puta donation box in the student centerand sold red and white “Don’t GiveUp, Japan” wristbands and T-shirts.They also visited local churches,encouraging the congregations tosupport the project.By the end of the school year,students had raised $7,500. Allof the money will be turnedover to the Asia-Pacific Division ofthe Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong> Church fordisaster relief.Throughout the project, there werecountless inspiring stories of people whofelt called to give, Leroy says. Juniornursing major Rhina Urdaneta prayedthat God would help her find somemoney to donate to the project, becauseshe had none of her own to give. Thenext week, an older woman whomRhina had been driving around town torun errands said she wanted to give thestudent $100 for her help.At first Rhina declined, but thenrealized it was the answer to her prayer.Students are finding their own waysto serve, with the help of groupslike the Student Association.“One ofmy goals<strong>Fall</strong> <strong>2011</strong> 7


[as community service director] wasto make community service a lifestyleamong our student body … to makecommunity service more than just theannual Community Service Day,” Leroysays. “This has given students a chanceto see that they can have an impact onpeople’s lives across the ocean. We’regetting trained to shine our light topeople around the world.”There are few Christians—let aloneSeventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong>s—in Japan,Keri says, so she hopes the students’ effortswill help people see Jesus’ love.“We want to be able to spread thegospel through this disaster and givethem a little hope.”West Side 4 JesusEvery Friday around 3 p.m., a groupof boys starts to gather in the grassycommon area outside the housing projectsin Chattanooga’s Westside.There are about 11 middle schoolersand high schoolers waiting for the vanfull of <strong>Southern</strong> students they’ve cometo expect once a week.Flag football is the main event onFridays, but the games are only part ofwhat has, in two years, become one ofthe most attended ministries organizedby <strong>Southern</strong> students.Junior nursing major Chett Claytonsays it was when he realized theWestside boys were actually waiting onthe <strong>Southern</strong> students for the weeklyfootball game that he knew his ministryhad taken root.“It was sort of shocking,” he says.“They’re really disappointed if we don’tshow up.”Senior pastoral care major EliudSicard had been doing some Bible workin the Westside area when he decidedit was time for <strong>Southern</strong> to reach outto the community. There aren’t manychurches within walking distance fromthe projects, and many residents haveno transportation to leave the area,he says. So along with several friends,Eliud, <strong>Southern</strong>’s outreach director forCampus Ministries, began West Side 4Jesus.It’s a multifaceted ministry: Fridayafternoons are for flag football, GEDtutoring, and health expos. On Sabbath,some students participate in theResidents have told him thatviolence and gang activity stopswhen the students are there, sothe community feels safer whenthe volunteers are around.children’s ministry, playing games withthe local kids; some go door-to-door,praying with people and collectingprayer requests; while others hold Biblestudies inside people’s homes. Theirgoal is to hold an evangelistic series inthe projects in September 2012.The key to the West Side 4 Jesusministry is consistently buildingChristian relationships, Eliud says.He remembers one couple who wasexpecting their first child and had tomove out of their house. Homeless,they had nowhere to turn.When the students heard about thesituation, they took up a collectionamong themselves and raised enoughmoney to buy the couple a night’s stayin a hotel. Later, Eliud followed up withthem and got them connected with alocal homeless shelter.“The look on their faces was sopriceless; that’s something that willtouch them for eternity,” he says. “Thegospel is that God loves you, but alsothat Christ took care of people’s needsfirst.”Chett and other students have beensurprised how open the Westside communityis to having <strong>Southern</strong> studentsvisit. Residents have told him thatviolence and gang activity stops whenthe students are there, so the communityfeels safer when the volunteersare around. Sometimes, before studentseven begin talking, residents will grabtheir hands and ask them to pray aboutsomething that’s going on in their lives.“I feel God is coming very soon, andthe people in Westside are really opento God,” Chett says. “There really are alot of people down there searching forGod, but they don’t know how to getout of the situation they’re in becauseall of their friends are doing drugs or ingangs. They want to know why we’redifferent and how they can get that.”Therapeutic RidingFrom her perch on top of the horse,the little girl didn’t speak at all.She was about 5 years old andhad autism.She may have been quiet, but JoshuaWalker, senior architectural draftingmajor, was struck by the girl’s happinessas he led her horse slowlyaround the ring.“This little girl, for the entiretime, had this huge smile onher face, and her mom said shereally enjoyed coming for theexercise,” Joshua says. “It waskind of a blessing, and it was reallycute to see how happy shewas. She didn’t talk; she justsmiled.”In his past two years at<strong>Southern</strong>, Joshua has spenthours cleaning stalls, feedinghorses, and leadinghorses around the groundsat Tri-State Therapeutic RidingCenter. What started out as a way tofulfill a community service requirementfor a class turned into something heoften looked forward to.“Volunteering is mandatory for8 Columns


“Volunteering is mandatory forschool, but after you do the volunteering,if you put your heart into itat all, it’s more of a blessing to youthan to those you’re helping.”school, but after you do the volunteering,if you put your heart intoit at all, it’s more of a blessing toyou than to those you’re helping,”Joshua says.Tri-State TherapeuticRiding Center giveschildren and adults withmental, emotional, andphysical disabilitiesthe chance to increasetheir dexterity and toexercise their trust inanimals and people.Whether the staff isleading a horse andrider around the arenaor helping moreseverely disabledchildren into anenclosed saddle tokeep them upright,they’re always inneed of an extraset of hands.When DeniseWright firstbecame directorof this Cleveland,Tennessee-basednonprofit andwas in needof volunteers,she thoughtimmediatelyof <strong>Southern</strong>.“In college,I wasalways lookingfor volunteerinternships.I started contacting the local schools,”Denise says.She wasn’t disappointed. From theminute the first two <strong>Southern</strong> volunteersstepped into the barn, Deniseknew the partnership was a good fit.“The students at <strong>Southern</strong> are sowilling. They just gave a whole lot; theyhave a heart for it.”Denise says she’s on the lookout foradditional dedicated volunteers. Tri-State Therapeutic Riding Center hasstarted a mentoring program for at-riskteenagers, and all mentors must be overthe age of 18.“We really rely on college students.They tend to have such good attitudes,”she says.Christian Service ProgramMelissa Tortal, ’09, has always beenpassionate about service. As a junior at<strong>Southern</strong>, she was a natural at directingCommunity Service Day, where sheorganized more than 700 students andfaculty members in volunteer projectsthroughout the Chattanooga area.“It’s important for all students to realizethey can use their gifts, skills, andcareers in service,” says Tortal. “Godhasn’t just called pastors and teachers toserve, but people of all professions.”Next, she took a year to serve asa task force worker at Camp Kulaquain Florida. Returning to campus hersenior year, Tortal once again led theCommunity Service Day event. Aftergraduating, <strong>Southern</strong> hired her forthe new position of service initiativecoordinator.For the last year and a half, the universityhas conducted a pilot initiativeto explore an official service-learningprogram. Tortal has documented existingservice projects, assessed communityneeds, and established a system forhelping students find projects relevantto their career paths. As a result, anew Christian Service Program waslaunched this fall, and a service componentwas integrated into <strong>Southern</strong>’scurriculum.The idea is to give students experiencesthat will empower them to gointo their communities after they graduate,identify the specific needs, and usethe precise skills they have developed at<strong>Southern</strong> to address those needs.“The new program will help us be“It’s important for all students torealize they can use their gifts,skills, and careers in service,”says Tortal. “God hasn’t just calledpastors and teachers to serve, butpeople of all professions.”sure that all students are involved inservice,” says Bob Young, vice presidentfor academic administration. “I believeit will be a blessing to the local community,help our students grow in significantareas, and raise general awarenessof the call to Christ’s followers to servethe needs of others.”Whether through short-term orlong-term mission work, communityservice projects or fundraisers, <strong>Southern</strong>provides opportunities for students togive back to their communities, improvetheir leadership skills, and catchthe inspiration for a lasting commitmentto service. nTo see video clips of several service projects,visit southern.edu/columns.<strong>Fall</strong> <strong>2011</strong> 9


Trips Overseas Provide Extra Edge for <strong>Southern</strong> Students Who Take Advantage of Summer Study ToursBy Caitlin Foster, ’11After spring final exams have been completed and summer officially begins at <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Adventist</strong><strong>University</strong>, many students pack up and head home until fall semester. Some, however, pack for anentirely new and different destination. International study tours give students the opportunity tolearn more about their courses of study while expanding their worldviews.Business in ChinaThe opportunity offered by the School of Business andManagement to earn credit hours by traveling to a foreigncountry sounded perfect for senior international businessmajor Haslel Toruno.“I love to travel, so the summer study tour to Chinaseemed like the best of both worlds!” Toruno said.The China trip was also appealing to senior social workmajor Xenia Figueroa, who admits that at first, she didn’t fullyanticipate the impact the journey would have on her experienceat <strong>Southern</strong>.“I’m so glad I went, because not only did I get to see anothercountry and its culture, but I got to experience how thecountry does business,” Figueroa said.From May 8 to May 27, students kept a journal that theyturned in for credit at the end of the trip. The daily scheduletypically involved visiting a local business in the morning,and then sightseeing in the afternoon. This created a balancebetween learning about China’s business practices and itscultural heritage at places like the Hong Kong InternationalTrade and Stock Exchange and the Forbidden City.Both Toruno and Figueroa believe the trip greatly contributedto their future careers by allowing them to directly observeand speak with those already working in international business.The experience made it easier to understand the diverse natureof business between cultures in a way that would not have beenpossible in a traditional classroom environment. Plus, as Torunoobserved, a study tour to China looks good on her résumé!Music in PolandAs the business students were learning commerce in China,members of <strong>Southern</strong>’s orchestra were displaying their musicalskills in Poland. For two weeks in early May, student musiciansperformed at cathedrals, music conservatories, and Seventh-day<strong>Adventist</strong> churches in Pszczyna, Warsaw, and Gdansk. Betweenconcerts, they were able to explore the cities and learn aboutthe country’s history. The group also visited Wawel Castle inKrakow, the salt mines, and the Auschwitz concentration camp.Cathedral performances, with their grand architecture andhistory, stood out for many <strong>Southern</strong> musicians. The statelyhouses of worship provided excellent acoustics and a reminderfor students of their focus as musical witnesses for God.In one cathedral, the orchestra held a benefit concert toraise money for a child in the hospital with heart problems.10 Columns


Their final concert, which took place ina cathedral in Warsaw, was stirring forjunior nursing major Jeremy Pastor. Asthe orchestra played inside, people weredrawn in from the street by the sound oftheir music and “as soon as they steppedinside, they became very reverent,” Pastorsaid. “It felt profound.”Social Work in EuropeExposing students to different cultureswas the main goal of the School ofSocial Work’s European tour, accordingto assistant professor Stanley Stevenson.The trip was organized to be a culturalimmersion experience, in whichstudents would learn about Europeansocieties by becoming part of them fornearly a month.By the end of the trip, students hadvisited eight European countries. Fromthe crowded streets and Eiffel Tower ofParis, to the pristine mountain air ofSwitzerland, to the Bohemian atmosphereof Amsterdam, the students hada lot to absorb.Some students found that theycould relate their observations directlyto what they are studying in school.Junior nursing/pre-med major AlexBowen says that this was the case forhim and that “seeing the different typesof healthcare systems in Europe reallygave me a new perspective and brokedown any prejudices I had.”Learning about Europe by reading isbeneficial, but it simply does not havethe same impact as actually going there.This, professor Stevenson feels, is whatmakes this trip a very important part ofanyone’s education.“There’s something very tangibleand visceral about actually touchingand standing in a place you’ve studiedin history class that you can’t get bywatching a video or reading a book,”Stevenson said.Archaeology in IsraelStudents traveled to Israel to helpexcavate the biblical city of KhirbetQeiyafa, which existed during the reignof King David and is believed to be afortress. The large majority of artifactsfound were pieces of pottery, but themost significant and exciting find wasthe olive press, which is the earliestHellenistic press found in the city. Alibation vessel, one of only a few in theworld, was also found, giving evidenceof the mixing of religions and cult practicestaking place there at some point.During the trip students gained confidencenot only in their archaeologicalskills, but also in their faith. Throughtheir efforts at the dig site and firsthandobservations during weekend toursaround Israel and Jordan, the Biblestories they had been told since childhoodbecame more real to them. Juniortheology and near east/classical studiesarchaeology major Ethan White hopesto use what he learned about archaeologyin Israel in an evangelistic series,and he recommends the archaeologytrip to everyone.“The impact on your spiritual walkis amazing; the experience of touring Jerusalemand seeing where Jesus walkedand the places mentioned in the Bibleadded detail and personalized the Biblefor me,” White said.Junior theology and near east/classicalstudies archaeology major CherieLynn Milliron also feels that her spirituallife has improved as a direct resultof the trip.“I came back with a sense of urgencythat the Bible is real,” she said.“[As a child] I learned the names ofBiblical places in church, and it’s moreabstract. By Angela Baerg, ’06Professor’s study affirms the ability of God’s Word to alter personalityDespite growing up an <strong>Adventist</strong>, Robert Montague, Ph.D., professor in the Schoolof Business and Management, didn’t take his faith seriously until one day in collegewhen a visiting speaker challenged him to read the Bible on a regular basis.12 Columns


“When I did that, all of a suddenI realized God’s word waspowerful,” says Montague.“From then on, my life changed for thebetter. My grades in school shot up, myrelationships changed, and my futurebecame bright with hope.”Montague’s experience inspired himto conduct a study to find out if the averageperson’s personality and life habitsare altered for the better when he orshe engages in consistent Bible reading.He looked in particular at how Biblereading affected the “Big Five” personalitytraits as defined in psychologicalliterature: openness, conscientiousness,extraversion, agreeableness, andneuroticism. For example, would peoplewho were more intimately connectedwith God be less “neurotic” becausethey were more able to cast their burdenson Him?Since it is impossible to quantifyinward spirituality as a result of Biblereading, Montague decided to explorethe correlation between personality andsomething that could be more objectivelymeasured: biblical knowledge. InAugust 2010, Montague made preparationsto scientifically poll membersof eight randomly selected Protestantchurches of various denominationsacross the United States to find out iftheir experiences were like his.<strong>Southern</strong>’s School of Business andManagement sponsored the ventureout of interest in the study’s potentialability to be a witness to the academiccommunity. Graduate assistant DianaSantos, studying toward a master’sdegree in business administration, did alot of legwork on the project, personallycanvassing dozens of pastors to encouragethem to participate in the research,making hundreds of phone calls, andspending hours entering survey results.When asked why a business professorwould conduct a study in the area ofreligion, Montague asks why not? “I’vemixed religion in business all of my life,first when I was a hospital administratorand now that I’m a professor,” he says.“As a Christian, I believe the two areinseparable.”Measuring the Impact of BibleReading on PersonalityAlthough a lot of research hasinvestigated areas of Christianity andgeneric spirituality, not much has beendone specifically regarding the Bibleand personality. In Montague’s study,each participant filled out an 84-questionsurvey about his or her personalitytraits, lifestyle habits, and biblicalknowledge. On a scale from one to five,church members rated how much theyagreed or disagreed with statementssuch as “I am able to do things as wellas most other people” and “I see myselfas someone who gets nervous easily.”Other questions measured where theperson scored on a spectrum of Bibleknowledge. Questions ranged fromcommon knowledge such as “What wasJesus’ mother’s name?” to more obscurequestions such as “What did Abigail doafter Nabal died?”survey ResultsMost of the results are now in, andalthough subsequent data could showotherwise, so far the trends are encouraging:People who know more about theBible self-report lower on the neuroticismscale, indicating they have fewernegative emotions such as anxiety,depression, and anger. They also selfreporthaving more hope for the future.Montague hopes to publish the resultsof his study, highlighting the positivecorrelations between Bible readingand personality. Manypeople tend to assume that this justmaterialized gradually, a natural fit forthe Protestants who dominated Englishculture. What they don’t realize is thatalthough Protestants sought tolerationfor themselves, it took them quite awhile to extend that same courtesy toCatholics. Religious tolerance did notjust happen; it was fiercely debated andintentionally implemented by passionateindividuals.“We can’t just assume that a liberaldemocracy like the one we live in hasbuilt-in protection for everyone,” Dillersaid. “Understanding the way religioustolerance developed in the past helpsus recognize what that means for oursociety today, especially for groups weperceive as politically dangerous.”Biology DEPARTMENTKeith SnyderFor the past three years, Keith Snyder,Ph.D., has participated in GordonAtkins’ long-term study of cricketspeciation in the spring and fall fieldcrickets. They have found that callsbetween the two species are sometimesmore similar than call variation withineach species and that there appears tobe a gradient change in cricket callsfrom the north to the south for bothspecies.Snyder and Atkins are trying todetermine how quickly speciation cantake place. These results may haveramifications for how fast one speciescan split into two.“We are interested in this from a scientificview and from a religious view,”Snyder said. “It is interesting to see howquickly new species can develop after acataclysmic event like the Flood.”SCHOOL OF Social WorkRene DrummWhen Rene Drumm, Ph.D., andher research team studied spouse abusewithin the Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong>Church, they were sad to see that <strong>Adventist</strong>statistics were on par with otherU.S. study populations. SCHOOL OF NursingHolly GaddAs well as being a professor, HollyGadd, Ph.D., is a family nurse practitionerwho works alongside nursingstudents to assist patients in severaldifferent settings, helping patients learnto manage chronic health problemssuch as diabetes, high blood pressure,obesity, smoking problems, and abnormalcholesterol levels. Data from herwork in these settings is used to trackwhich health challenges improve mostunder direct care from an onsite nursepractitioner, which ones require differentstrategies to be successful, and whatthose strategies might be.“Ultimately, the goal of managingthese health problems is to reduce riskof more severe health problems, tomaintain the highest quality of life foreach individual patient, and to reducehealthcare expenditures over the longrun,” Gadd said. “My goal is that myresearch will help my patients livehealthier, happier lives.”SCHOOL OF Journalism andCommunicationLinda CrumleyAfter student Renee Baumgartner,’08, saw some negative effects of Americangift-giving to locals during shorttermmission trips, she began a studywith instructors Linda Crumley, Ph.D.and Mindi Rahn, and many studenthelpers. Their research has revealedthat these well-intended gifts oftenhave unexpected consequences such ashaving people fight over presents, localsdeveloping an attitude of entitlement,or motivating people to become beggarsbecause it is so lucrative.“With more than 100,000 Americansparticipating in short-term missiontrips each year, it is a potentially volatilesituation,” Crumley said. “Certainlyit is off-target from Christ’s command ofmaking disciples.”Crumley and Baumgartner hopetheir research can result in better trainingfor good-intentioned missionarieswho need direction in selecting giftsthat will truly benefit the communitiesto which they are ministering.Physics AND ENGINEERINGDEPARTMENTKen CavinessWhen Ken Caviness, Ph.D., is notteaching physics to his students, hespends his time researching to betterunderstand it himself. Caviness is currentlystudying causal networks generatedfrom sequential substitution systems.Causal networks are rules of causeand effect. In Caviness’ research, substitutionsare sequentially made into thesenetworks using a computer program,and the trends generated by the resultsare studied. »professorinspirationProfessor Helen Pyke’s door was always open for her students.The End of an EraBy Caitlin Foster, ’11Learning to write well can be a difficult and nerve-wracking task, butHelen Pyke, associate professor of English, made it enjoyable.Pyke’s smile and warm greetings calmed freshmen nerves about theirnew environment and grades. Her cookies—creative treats containinganything from chocolate chips to pineapple to raisins and coconut—were baked from scratch for students on days when their papers for herwere due. For these reasons and more, Pyke is sorely missed on campusthis fall, retiring recently after 24 years at <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Pyke originally planned to work at College Press, but began teachingcomposition classes during the summer of 1987 after talking with DavidSmith, who was chair of the English Department at the time.“After less than a week in the classroom, I told David that this iswhere I belong,” Pyke said. “All other teaching experiences had justbeen training for this.”Freshmen still anxious about their abilities to perform well in collegeclasses became self-assured writers and all-around confident studentsafter taking classes from Pyke. Senior English major Olivia Nieb was oneof these worried new students when she first came to <strong>Southern</strong> and wasassigned Pyke as her academic advisor.“When I came to school as a freshman, I was very, very nervous andshy,” Nieb said, “but Ms. Pyke had a very friendly smile. She told mewhat to expect and made me feel right at home.”Pyke supported student writers as a creative writing instructor andone-year sponsor of the Writer’s Club. Her often-repeated statement,“There is no one way to write; there are millions of ways,” was the coreof what she tried to teach. This approach to writing inspired Nieb towrite articles for the Seventh-day <strong>Adventist</strong> magazines Guide and Insight.“She really urged us to share our writing with others and gave greatadvice on how to get published,” Nieb said. “She made us feel goodabout what we did!”Pyke remains passionate about teaching students how to be goodwriters.“Anyone who really wants to write can learn to do it right,” Pykesaid. “Writers are not born. They learn their craft because they are passionateabout sharing ideas and want to write better than they do, nomatter how long they do it or how good they get.”Like Nieb, senior social work major Lauren Souza found inspirationin her relationship with Pyke. Souza started workingfor Pyke the second semester of her freshmanyear. Since then, she’s come to see Pyke not onlyas a good boss, but also as a mentor and friend whowas always willing to listen and offer guidance.“Every time I came to work, we would havewonderful conversations about how to handle situationsin life,” Souza said. “One time I had a reallybad day, and I just started crying in her office. Shecame over and gave me an incredible hug; I mean,she just squeezed the life out of me! It was so niceto know that she cared, that she loved me.”The same caring personality and dedicationSouza experienced was also clear to all whoenjoyed Pyke’s famous cookies, made fresh for dayswhen final draft papers were due. These treatsremain legendary in Brock Hall and beyond.“Those cookies were so good! I really appreciatedthat she took the time to make them foreveryone,” Nieb said. “That, along with rememberingeach student’s name, showed that she caredabout each individual.”Having positively affected so many people’slives, Pyke’s absence will be keenly felt.“It’s hard to believe she won’t be working andteaching here anymore. I was very lucky to workfor her; she is an incredible woman,” Souza said.“It really feels like the end of an era.”Though she doesn’t plan to teach collegeclasses again, Pyke will remain involved withteaching and writing by leading a youth Sabbathschool class, and possibly teaching creative writingworkshops. For now, she is living and working onher small farm in Alabama.“My right hand is already beginning to recoverfrom holding a pink or purple pen all those years,”she said. “But I will miss the students and theirpapers.” n<strong>Fall</strong> <strong>2011</strong> 17

Circled in red ink was my grade: A+.But that wasn’t what got my attention. At the endof the assignment was a note from my teacher.It read, “Congratulations. You went above andbeyond the call of duty.” I had never heard thisphrase before, so I asked my teacher what it meant.She explained that I had done much more thanwhat was required for the assignment and that Ihad done it with excellence.Since then I have tried endlessly to re-createthe feeling I had when I saw that note. To knowthat I did more than what was required, to give mybest, and to do it with excellence seemed worthexcessive studying and checking for accuracy.Hard to Be PerfectIn high school, it was tough to emulate thatfeeling, yet I somehow managed to do it. Takingsix advanced placement classes and completingassignments that my teachers would ask to keep forexamples made me strive all the more to go aboveand beyond. I frequently skipped meals, went tobed early, and turned down offers to hang out withfriends for the sake of excellence. When I receivedmy high school diploma, I vowed to make it clearin college too that I was no ordinary student, butone who went above and beyond the call of duty.As a naïve freshman, I signed up for many clubsand activities. It was not until I started receivingemails from each of them and tried in vain to meettheir demands that I faltered in my middle schoolvow. Three years later, I look back at my involvementas a resident assistant, double major, painterat Plant Services, Asian Club pastor and socialvice president, Sabbath School leader, Patten Towersvolunteer, member of Bible Workers Club, andvarious other activities that I realize everything Igave up in my attempt to go above and beyond—namely sleep, a social life, exercise, healthy food,vacations, and more importantly, the very desire Istarted with to go above and beyond. If I had a split personality, managingall of those tasks would have been a lot easier, but I realized I’d beenmaintaining instead of excelling.Where Did I Go Wrong?The other day as I was reflecting with my girlfriend on the challengesof the year and the stress I frequently exhibit, she said something thatstruck me.“You’re trying to go above and beyond in every single thing you’reinvolved in.”I had never told her about my middle school experience or articulatedmy vow; nevertheless, she saw what was getting at me. I was involvedin too much, and I was trying to be the best in everything. As a result, Ifound myself struggling in everything.Since coming to <strong>Southern</strong>, I can safely say that I’ve done too much.God never designed one individual to do everything, but rather for eachmember of the body to excel in its job for the function of the wholebody (see 1 Corinthians 12). Here are some things I’ve learned in threeyears of college:• Life gives us too many options, and <strong>Southern</strong> is no exception. Thisisn’t necessarily a bad thing; it just requires wisdom to choose carefullyso at the end of the day, after schoolwork, homework, andregular work, we’ll have enough energy left for our extracurricularactivities.• It’s important to plan free time. Free time is just as essential asmealtime and should be treated the same way.• A lot of stress is avoidable by learning to say “no.” There are somethings that we just should not do. It’s okay not to do them, so weshouldn’t be afraid to use that two-letter word.Modeled After ChristWhen I think about Jesus’ ministry, I realize that one of the thingsthat made it so effective was its focus. Even Jesus did not heal, convert,or reach everyone, but his ministry was still effective because He continuallytrained His disciples to take over for Him when He left. It tookmore than three years for them to get the point, but after Jesus ascended,the fruit of His labor was found mostly through the work of His disciplesand the success of the early church.The same lesson, I realized, is applicable in my life: Better to goabove and beyond in one area and be effective than to be mediocre inmany things. n18 Columns

And the coursework isthe easy part.Finding opportunities to share thesenew truths with others, and being comfortableenough to engage when themoments do arise, is often more dauntingthan the hours spent diving into prophecyand practicum work. To help with this,SALT spends considerable time teachingeffective evangelism and one-on-onetechniques that make the sharing ofbeliefs come more naturally to Christians.Classes for the inaugural SALT courseMichael Cafferky, professor of Businessand Management at <strong>Southern</strong><strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>University</strong>, has written andpublished a new textbook, the first everof its kind.Management: A Faith-Based Perspectiveis the only full-length college textbookever written on management from aChristian perspective. The textbook cameoff the press in September, and professorsat six different colleges have alreadystated their plans to use it. The bookwill also be used at <strong>Southern</strong> starting inwinter 2012 for the class “Principles ofMarketing.”Inspiration for the textbook came toCafferky in 2003 as he first began teachingat <strong>Southern</strong>. Upon realizing there wasno management textbook like this for himThe SALT leadership team had a chance to reconnect during the ASIConvention in Sacramento. After three yearsof communication, they showed a seriousinterest and he began the long processof writing the textbook. This is theMARYLANDhighest honor bestowed bythe United States governmenton science and engineeringprofessionals in the early stages of theirindependent research careers.Gulley, who entered the tenure trackat the National Institutes of Health in2010, was recently tenured based on hisleadership in the field of immunotherapyfor cancer. He has brought a vaccinedeveloped in the Laboratory of TumorImmunology and Biology (within the NationalCancer Institute) into human trialsthrough preliminary efficacy studies andnow into a phase 3 clinical trial. The studysuggested a 44% reduction in the risk ofdeath compared with placebo. »headlines[around the nation]Student TurnsWakeskate Skills IntoTraveling OutreachMinistryWith a pair of sneakers and awakeskate under his feet, MatthewManzari, junior theology major at <strong>Southern</strong>,is in his element—ready to hit thewater, jump waves, and try new tricks.Wakeskating is a combination of skateboardingand wakeboarding that requiresathletes to balance without foot bindingson a board pulled by a boat. Matthew, aprofessional wakeskater, began competingwhen he was 13 years old. By age15, he had several sponsorships, whichnow include Nike 6.0, CWB Board Co.,Arnette Sunglasses, Sea Doo, andPerformance Ski and Surf.Shifted PrioritiesAs Matthew became more involvedwith wakeskating, he noticed that hestarted to drift from God. His prioritieschanged as he went to competitions allover the world.“I didn’t have plans for college,” saysMatthew. “I intended to be in this sport ’tilI was at least 30 and then work as a teammanager or something else in the sport.”One morning everything changed.Matthew woke up unable to ignore thefeeling that God was speaking to him andthat something in his life had to shift. As Matthewcontinues to study at <strong>Southern</strong> andparticipate in wakeskate competitions, herealizes why God brought wakeskatinginto his life.“One reason is to relate to youthbecause it opens a door to them, as arider based in ministry,” says Matthew.“A second reason is that it has been andstill is a great life experience. [around the world]»headlinesPacific Island Trip Helps Complete Book On <strong>Fall</strong>en MissionaryRainey Park,’10, didn’t realize that enrollingin the Literary Journalism classfrom Andy Nash, Ph.D., would lead topublishing her own book, Love, Kirsten.The class, which is focused on the artof telling true stories, requires studentsto turn in one 20-page article that couldbe a portion of a book. While studentswere on the hunt for the perfectstory, Rainey thought aboutKirsten Wolcott, a studentYAP missionary from <strong>Southern</strong> whowas murdered in November2009 while serving on theisland of Yap. Rainey says whatinitially attracted her to the story wasthat it was close to home and relevant.She also thought the story deserved tobe told accurately.“There was a lot about the story wedidn’t know,” says Rainey. “I wanted toget to the truth of who Kirsten was.”Contacting the FamilyRainey’s first step was contactingKirsten’s family.“I was nervous at first about callingKirsten’s parents,” says Rainey. “I knewthey were still grieving, and I didn’t wantto upset them by asking permission towrite their daughter’s story.”As it turned out, Hollis and KarenWolcott were warm and willing to helphowever possible. They supplied Raineywith Kirsten’s journals, which became theprimary source of insight into Kirsten’sworld. After visiting the Wolcott family, Raineyfinished her 20-page assignment and thesemester ended, but the journey didn’tstop there. Rainey decided to travel toYap to gather more information and finishwriting the book-length story.“It was a risky decision,” says Rainey. “Ididn’t have a contract with a publisher oreven know if I would be successful, butI knew I needed details from Yap if I wasgoing to finish the story. I thought, ‘Howcan I write about places I haven’t seen orpeople I haven’t met?’”Rainey decided to take the risk, usingleftover scholarship money to purchase aplane ticket to Yap. While on the island,she met with other student missionaries,interacted with Kirsten’s students, interviewedtwo senators, and even met withKirsten’s confessed murderer.Upon returning from Yap, Rainey satdown to finish the story. She says thatalthough she had read Kirsten’s journals,she had to start over in the writing processbecause of the new perspective shegained on her trip to Yap.“After visiting Yap and talking to thedifferent people involved, the journalcame alive,” says Rainey. “Kirsten’s wordstook on a new significance, and I understoodher better.”The Finished Product“During the summer, I made contactwith the acquisitions editor at PacificPress, and after submitting severalexcerpts, it finally got accepted,” saysRainey. This past summer <strong>Southern</strong>sent a group of 50 to help excavate atKhirbet Qeiyafa, the biblical site ofShaarayim (1 Samuel 17:52).This archaeological site is presumablythe location of the historic battle betweenDavid and Goliath, and it has recentlybeen a topic of much scholarly debatebetween those denying the existence ofthe kingdom of David as described in theBible and biblical scholars who upholdthe historical authenticity of David. CNNfeatured this controversy in a report withfootage that includes <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Adventist</strong><strong>University</strong> volunteers. »mission minutePig Heads,Pirates, andPurpose in PeruBy Hannah Melara, junior graphic design majornine short months, Peru went from beingIn just the name of another country to being myhome.I can remember back to the very first morningmy fellow missionaries and I arrived in Pucallpa,Peru. My first impression was that it was peaceful.I distinctly remember that as we pulled into thelong driveway, shaded by mango trees, there was alittle bit of fog in the air. The chickens were aboutdone with their morning ritual of screaming theirheads off, and the bees were humming busily in theponderosa tree, alive with hot pink blossoms.I’m glad God doesn’t always allow us to seewhat’s coming next. I’m glad that every day is asurprise package. Because little did I know that thenext nine months of my life were going to be filledwith adventure, danger, and complete craziness(but in a good way).About a month after arriving and completingour simplified medical training—giving each othershots and pulling teeth from a dead pig head—the doctor announced that it was time to have acampaign.“This week is really going to test your limits,”he said, “physically, mentally, and spiritually.”He was right. I acted as a triage nurse for ourcampaign in Ivan Sikic on the outskirts of Pucallpa.As a triage nurse, my job was to take thesymptoms and vital signs of each patient beforethey saw a doctor. Easy enough, right? But when you’re sitting under theblazing Amazon sun with 200 people pressed around you, barely givingyou enough room to take a drink of water; when you have sweat pouringout of every pore in your body; when you don’t understand half of thethings that people are saying to you; when it’s 3 p.m. and you haven’teaten anything because there are still more patients to see, Satan startsmessing with you. You get frustrated. Quick-tempered. It was hard. Andby Tuesday I was ready to quit.But then I noticed that something was happening; something wassoftening inside of me. I began seeing the people. I began realizing thatthey were moms and sisters and grandpas, just like my mom and sistersand grandpa. They desperately needed someone to care, and that someonecould be me.By the grace of God, I learned a lot of Spanish that week. I learnedevery part of the body and became very familiar with terms like dolorde cabeza, bichos, and dolor de estomago—which, roughly translated, areheadache, worms, and stomach ache. And as I befriended the people, theystarted touching my life.By the end of the week, I didn’t want to leave. I was flying throughtriage. I was doing something, and even though I went without eatingmost of the week and crashed from exhaustion every night, it was thebest week I had in Peru up to that point.As soon as we finished, it was off to another campaign. Finish one,start another, with barely enough time to breathe. Okay, maybe time forone quick breath. But then it was back to all the action; this time, fourdays on a river.Reality of RepetitionImagine with me. The boat hums and the sun warms your face whiletraveling down the Ucayali River. Exotic birds are calling from massivetress with vines that twist and turn. The boat winds through a narrowsection of the river; then, as the view opens up, there’s a small villagewith only 20 families. The hustle and bustle of civilization is far away.The locals help carry boxes from the boat to a small house—yourclinic. The team unpacks medical supplies and begins attending to2424 Columns


patients. Later, you start a soccer gamewith the kids and tell them stories aboutJesus. All too soon, it’s time to go.You’re back on the boat, marvelingat the beauty of the sunset on the wateruntil arriving at the next destination, alarger fishing town called Tacshitea. Youset up a hammock between two poles,or throw a sleeping bag on the sand anda mosquito net over your head, beforedozing to the sounds of locals playingcards and eating chicken.The next day the clinic is busy.There’s barely time to breathe betweenpatients. It’s all go, go, go, but you knowpeople are being helped. In exhaustion,there’s satisfaction. When the patientsare gone, you search for something toeat and realize that the only water tocook with is the same water you bathedin and arrived in by boat. After scoopingthis questionable brown liquid intothe pot for boiling, you pray that theLord will kill all of the parasites beforethe spaghetti is ready.And then—well, you know the routine—backon the boat and on to thenext village.Life Changes FastIt’s funny how most days start exactlythe same, yet in just one day, onehour, 10 minutes, your life can completelychange.After four days on the river withonly one “bath,” there was nothing Iwanted to do more than peel off mydirty, stinky clothes and take a shower.My friends and I sat in the front of theboat on our journey home. After talkingand reading for a bit, I leaned myhead back to take a nap. I was driftingasleep when all of a sudden, BANG!I whipped my head around and sawa double-barreled shotgun pointingstraight at me.Oh, God help us! I cried in my head.Pirates. Three men with masksand painted faces were shouting at us,“Por la playa! Por la playa!” Our driversteered the boat to the beach. Withguns still pointed at us, the men ransackedour boat. One by one, I watchedas things were taken out of my bag.I could hear my heart pounding inmy ears.One of the pirates looked straight atme and asked for my cellphone.“No tengo nada! No tengo nada!”It was all I could spit out, and it wastrue. I didn’t have anything, not even acellphone.He came to search my pockets.The doctor’s wife was crying as hetried to explain to the robbers that wewere medical missionaries and didn’thave anything of value.“We are just trying to help people,”he said.“Don’t look at me. Shut up!” one ofthe pirates said, as he continued to holda gun to the doctor’s neck.I’ve never had so many thoughts flythrough my head at once, all bouncingoff of each other, going a million milesan hour. I thought about my family andfriends—all those I love. I was tryingto remember if I had any enemies. Ithought about my future and past. I wastrying to imagine what it would feel liketo get shot or to die. I thought about mylife, hanging by the thread of a robber’simpulsive trigger finger. The funnything was that even though all of thesethings were going through my head, ablanket of peace covered me.Right before the attack, I had startedthe book Don’t Waste Your Life by JohnPiper. In it he quotes a small poem:Only one life,’Twill soon be past;Only what’s doneFor Christ will last.That little sentence hit me hard.The men’s voices interrupted mythoughts.“Where’s the other boat?” they keptasking.The other half of our team and supplieswere on a second boat, which hadgotten ahead of us and was out of sight.“Where’s the other boat?” theyrepeated. “What’s on it?”“Angels,” the doctor and his wifesaid. The robbers started making jokesabout God. “Where is God?” theylaughed.One of the men kept urging theothers to go. The pirates threw some ofour bags into their boat and took off asquickly as they came.Lessons LearnedMy point is not to tell you an adventurestory. It was terrible, and I wouldnever wish the same thing on anyone.What I want to emphasize is just howvaluable your life is. Look at the peopleyou surround yourself with, at the kindof life you are living, and make sureyou’re on the right path. You only getone life, so be immensely thankful forit. Today, the schoolstays true to form by encouraging an increasinglysedentary society to get moving again.Phil Garver, Ed.D., current dean and head ofthe program since 1975, believes God is workingthrough his program to bring balance back tounbalanced lives. “We’ve found that He blesseswhen we do the right things for the right reasons,”Garver said.Four DegreesSchool professors are preparing students toincrease activity in a culture that spends too muchtime sitting in front of computers, televisions, andgaming systems. This imbalance is contributing toincreased health risks for heart disease, diabetes,and osteoporosis. There has never been a greaterneed for health educators, and <strong>Southern</strong> has fourdistinct degrees contributing to that end.Health Science. Of the four bachelor’s degreesoffered through the school, this area has experiencedthe most growth with pre-professionalundergraduates who plan to continue studies inmedicine, dentistry, and physical therapy. Somefuture physicians, for example, are opting for classroomdiversity as a counterbalance to hours spentin laboratories.Wellness Management. More practical applicationsare being incorporated into this concentrationwith new classes such as Personal Conditioning.Students will learn how to make more tailoredrecommendations for their clients.Health, Physical Education and Recreation.Future P.E. teachers on this traditional track arefollowing a revised curriculum while earning ateacher certification.Sports Studies. The school provides a nonteachingqualification with an emphasis in humanA student instructor leads a spinning class in the Hulsey Wellness Center.performance, journalism, management, marketing, psychology, recreation,or public relations and advertising.Beyond the ClassroomUnder the recreation and outreach arm of the department, <strong>Southern</strong>’sgymnastics team continues to perform nationwide while promotingstrong health principles and an anti-drug message. More than half ofthe student body participates in intramurals and clubs, while thousandsaround campus–both students and community members–stay active on20 acres encompassing the track, disc golf course, ball fields, and tenniscourts.Employees on campus also benefit from the department’s focus onhealth and wellness, with incentives to actively use the facilities andresources. As a direct result, university healthcare costs are consistentlyunder budget.Administrators and faculty have chosen “Living in Balance: PhysicalActivity” as the focus for the university’s five-year evaluation processnecessary to maintain accreditation through the <strong>Southern</strong> Associationof Colleges and Schools. Reaching every student on campus and trackingtheir activities are just two of the goals set in the early planningstages of this pivotal undertaking, scheduled to begin in 2012.National ProminenceRegularly recognized among the nation’s healthiest companies,<strong>Southern</strong> has earned two gold Well Workplace Awards from the WellnessCouncil of America. And just this past summer, the school receivedone of only two awards presented by the National Wellness Institute(NWI) to outstanding undergraduate health promotion programs acrossthe United States. In citing why <strong>Southern</strong> was chosen, the NWI pressrelease described the university as having “one of the most innovativeprograms in the country.”Garver plans to keep the momentum of those awards going by hostingan international wellness conference at <strong>Southern</strong> 2012. Approximately 8,000 peopleexperienced the tastes, sights, andsounds of Jerusalem as they sat in onthe Last Supper, spent an evening withJesus in the Garden of Gethsemane,followed Him to the cross, and witnessedHim rise from the tomb. With such arealistic rendition of Christ’s sacrifice,the goal is that many will fully graspJesus’ love for them for the first time.


»the wordBy Gordon Bietz, presidentprodigalYou’ve heard of the prodigal son, but have you heard of the ProdigalFather? By prodigal, I mean extravagant to the point of beingwasteful. God is like that with His love. This is good for us, since in ourbroken world His love is the only thing that can fully mend our hearts.We see small indications of God’s total, healing love in our friends,but rarely do we grasp its wide expanse. We fail to view God’s love asa force—a wild and strong force—that pursues us everywhere. As thePsalmist wrote, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee fromyour presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bedin the depths, you are there” (Psalm 139:7-8, NIV).God’s love is like a gravitational force, drawing us to His heart. Youcan deal with it in several ways, but no matter what, it will follow you.The question is not whether He loves us, but how we will respond to theextravagant love He pours out.Unrequited LoveMichael Brown tells the story of a boy who was the apple of hisparents’ eyes. “Tragically,” Brown writes, “in his mid-teens, the boy’s lifewent awry. He dropped out of school and began associating with theworst kind of crowds.One night he staggered into his house at 3 a.m., completely drunk.His mother slipped out of bed and left her room. The father followed,assuming that his wife was in the kitchen, perhaps crying. Instead, hefound her at her son’s bedside, softly stroking his matted hair as he laypassed out drunk on the covers.“What are you doing?” the puzzled father asked.The mother simply answered, “He won’t let me love him when he’sawake.”The mother stepped into her son’s darkness with a love that existedeven though he did not yet love her back. So it is with God and us.”*We love because He loved us first. What can separate us from thatlove?Paul asks, “Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakednessor danger or sword?” (Romans 8:35, NIV). No. “Neither deathnor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future,nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anythingelse in all creation, will be able to separateus from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus ourLord” (verses 38-39, NIV).God’s Love Makes Us ConquerorsThe confidence we have as a result of God’slove is that “in all these things we are more thanconquerors through him who loved us” (verse 37,NIV). God is on our side, not against us. He’s notout to spoil our fun, trip us up, or catch us doingsomething wrong. Rather, He demonstrated Hislove and desire to fight for us when He “did notspare his own Son, but gave him up for us all”(Romans 8:32, NIV). He has chosen you, andnothing can separate you from His love. You aresecure in Christ, because of Christ. His love issuper-bonding you to Himself. “What, then, shallwe say in response to this? If God is for us, who canbe against us?” (verse 31, NIV).What will be your response? Will you deal withGod’s love by running from it all of your life andthen falling to it in the end? Will you reject it andthink that it has rejected you? Or will you accept itnow and bask in the energy and radiance it brings?Remember, the one thing you can’t do is turn offGod’s extravagant love.You can make His love ineffective in your life,But you can’t make Him stop loving you.You can construct a shield of amusements todivert your attention from Him,But you can’t make Him stop loving you.You can create a careless attitude of apathy,But you can’t make Him stop loving you.You can reject all you have been taught anddisbelieve in God’s existence,But you can’t make Him stop loving you.You can build a hard shell of bad behavior,But you can’t make Him stop loving you.Just as using an umbrella does not stop therain, no matter how hard you resist, you cannotstop God from loving you. Inthe last five years, new programs have included early childhoodeducation, outdoor leadership, and mental health counseling.Our latest one-year program is the Bible Worker certificate, andour social work program was reaccredited in 2010. Additionally,recent changes in religion requirements place a greater emphasison personal spiritual development, integration of <strong>Adventist</strong>beliefs, and biblical interpretation. Theinstitute will launch an annual lecture series,create a church historyThe annual <strong>Adventist</strong> Heritage tourgives students the opportunity torelive church history while visitinghistoric sites in New England.writing contest for students,continue studies on EllenWhite apologetics, andorganize <strong>Adventist</strong> Heritagetours.Israel Study Tour/DigStudents can earn three religion credit hourswhile venturing on the trip of a lifetime—astudy tour in Israel. The two-week Middle EastStudy Tour is both a faith-building and educationalexperience. Along with the tour, eachsummer archaeology students partner with theHebrew <strong>University</strong> of Jerusalem to excavate thehistorically significant site of Khirbet Qeiyafa,presumable location of the battle betweenDavid and Goliath.Previous sites included:• Cyprus in 2003• Hazor in 2004, 2005, and 2007SIFE-Students in Free Enterprise<strong>Southern</strong>’s SIFE team, sponsored by the Schoolof Business and Management, won the SIFERegional Competition for two consecutiveyears. Advancing to the national competition,the team had the opportunity to present theirprojects with 174 other teams. Of the team’s 15recent projects, one was to launch an awarenesscampaign for Collegedale’s recycling plant,another to analyze the processes of a hospitalin Tanzania, and another to start a for-profitbakery for academy students in Uruguay. SIFEencourages students of every major to use theirskills to solve problems in the community, thecountry, and the world.Business Encourages GlobalLeadershipThe School of Business and Management offersstudents the opportunity to learn about businessaround the world through study trips. Everyother summer the school offers a three-weektrip to China, where students meet with localexecutives and learn the true meaning of aglobal marketplace. During another study tripto Kenya, students were able to partner withnon-governmental organizations. They learnedhow to develop and build projects in economicallydevastated countries.<strong>Southern</strong> ConnectionsIn 2008, we established <strong>Southern</strong> Connections101, a freshmen orientation class that has reinforcedour goals to support student success andencourage meaningful relationships. As part ofthe <strong>Southern</strong> Connections class, the mentorshipprogram pairs student mentors with professorsof the same department. utreach Caring<strong>Southern</strong> in PracticeStudents Rally for No MoreThumbprintsFor the 2010-<strong>2011</strong> school year, theStudent Association organized andheaded a campaign to raise $5,000for No More Thumbprints, a projectthat supports literacy in El Salvador.Sponsored by Hope for Humanity,No More Thumbprints was a projectunder the <strong>Adventist</strong> IntercollegiateAssociation.The entire student body cametogether to work for this cause; theysent in donations, purchased “NoMore Thumbprints” merchandise,and participated in the various teamscompeting to show the most support.And when the $5,000 goal wasreached, our own President Bietzemerged with purple hair, signifyingthe purple team had won.“[No More Thumbprints] reallyshowed me how <strong>Southern</strong> as awhole cares about the world beyondcampus,” says Alec Jackson,<strong>2011</strong>-2012 Student AssociationPresident. “This campaign issomething that keeps givingbecause by teaching one personto read, we’re teaching a family.”40 Columns

For example,students in the Modern Languages Departmentvolunteer for several organizations, the mostpopular being community health fairs and localchapters of Habitat for Humanity and UnitedWay. ynamicGrowthFacilitiesOrigins ExhibitThe Biology Department’s new Origins Exhibitdepicts a creationist worldview of our beginnings.Sections of the exhibit include the cell,the geologic column, and intelligent design.While walking through the exhibit, studentsand visitors observe hand-painted versions ofthe most basic building blocks our Creator used.The exhibit is part of a three-phase plan toestablish an institute for origins.Expanded Biology TrailVolunteer organization Friends of White OakMountain partnered with community members,the Biology Department, and the OutdoorLeadership Department this year to add 11miles to the Biology Trail. Located on <strong>Southern</strong>’scampus, the Biology Trail is a popularlocation for biking, hiking, and running. Itspaths and trails feature some of themost beautiful plant life in the areaas well as several geocaches for themodern explorer. The Biology Trailis a great place to admire God’soutdoor sanctuary.Florida Hospital HallThe outpouring of gifts from corporations,nurses, and physicians allowed us to equipFlorida Hospital Hall with all of the resourcesand technology needed to prepare qualifiednurses. Students were able tocontribute more than they hadimagined, often offering ideas betterthan the original concept. Whileworking on the exhibit, the studentscoalesced into what Hight calls a“creative machine.” They demonstratedto him the high level oftraining students receive in theSchool of Visual Art and Design.“I kept thinking, ‘Look how muchthey can do, look how much they’vegrown,’” says Hight. “God stretchedthem in ways I wouldn’t haveimagined. sionProgreHighlights From <strong>Southern</strong>’sFacilities Master Plan:Housing for Living and LearningWith enrollment reaching record numbers,<strong>Southern</strong> has expanded its housing options toaccommodate a larger number of students. Twonew <strong>Southern</strong> Village apartment buildings havebeen added, and the Virginia Apartments wererenovated.To create residential space that encouragesthe development of student communities, theuniversity plans on constructing a new 300-bedresidence hall with cluster-style living areas bythe fall of 2013. Instead of long halls, each winghas rooms that all open up to a common livingarea (living room, kitchen, recreation space)on each floor. Students who live in these typesof housing designs naturally form relationshipswith their peers and participate in an environmentmuch more social than the traditionalresidence halls. The new facility will alsoinclude a chapel and classroom space.New Campus CenterConstructing a new hub for campus activityis an intentional effort to create a space forstudent involvement. This new building will bemade up of a student center, welcome center,and learning commons.The new student center will create a vibrantsocial experience for students of all majors. Besidesproviding a large enough space for studentactivities, the student center will also house anew food court that will accommodate a largerstudent body. All student services, campus ministries,and student government offices will berelocated to the new center, and there will benew prayer rooms, meeting rooms, and studentorganization workrooms. By placing the welcomecenter in the new student center, guestsand potential students will see campus life fromthe moment they walk in, creating a sense ofbelonging from the beginning.The learning commons will be adjacent to thestudent center and will provide students witheasy access to learning and information resources.Inside, students will have the ability to conductresearch and study in groups. The learningcommons will also accommodate the programsmanaged by the Student Success Center, suchas career counseling and tutoring. Having allthe programs in the same location will strengthenopportunities for wholistic student success.Pedestrian CampusIn order to enhance campus aesthetics andcreate a more pedestrian-friendly environment,part of our facilitiesmaster plan is tore-route traffic awayfrom the center ofcampus. The portionof <strong>University</strong> Drivelocated in the centerof campus will close,sending traffic awayfrom a green quadin the center. Summary of Changes in Net AssetsThe university experienced a net increase innet assets of almost $19 million over the fiveyears of this report.Operations: <strong>Southern</strong> experienced an increasein net assets from operations each year. Fiscalyear <strong>2011</strong> was a particularly strong year, with anet increase from operations of almost $3.7 million.Operating increases are important in orderto provide the cash flow necessary for capitalneeds and loan principal payments.Endowment: The Endowment Fund experiencedincreases and decreases. The decreases in fiscalyears 2008 and 2009 were due to the decline inmarket value of investments. Auxiliaryoperations, including student housing, food services, the book store, and leaseholds contributes16.2 percent. Independent operations, the majority contributor being the Village Market, produced8.7 percent of the revenues.
