Reduce Impacts of FloodingWell‐vegetated shorelines provide barriers against moving water by slowing the movement ofwater downstream, and by reducing the force, height, and volume of floodwaters. This allows them tospread out horizontally across the floodplain therefore reducing the potential of damage to the area(Nature in Deed, 2011).4. Provide Wildlife with Food and HabitatShorelines are vital to many different animals throughout their development and life. Shorelinesprotect wildlife from weather and predators; woody debris, such as tree trunks or roots in the waterprovide cover for fish to hide, basking areas for turtles, and resting sites for waterfowl (Nature in Deed,2011).3.2: Different ZonesUpland Zone: Higher and drier ground containing various shrubs and trees as well as animals that prefershoreline habitat. (Usually the area where a residence is built)Riparian Zone: Transitional area between dry land and water. Riparian zones often offer a variety ofplants and wildlife species due to the presence of water which provides organisms with food andexcellent shelter. Vegetation helps with runoff, soil erosion and shades and cools shallow water.20
