Notes from the Chair...
Welcome to the Summer edition of the
Department Newsletter. Inside you will
find items that we hope will be of interest
to you.
First: more “bricks and mortar” updates.
The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology
Clinic and Pediatric Infusion Center within
the UC Davis Cancer Center's new addition
will open September 24 and will offer
very specialized service to children and
their families in a beautiful new facility.
In addition, the new Telehealth Resource
Center will open in the late fall and will
house our robust Pediatric Telemedicine
program, headed by Dr. Jim Marcin. For
those of you who have not visited the
Sacramento campus recently I can also
tell you that the new 1200 car capacity
parking structure opened last month at
the corner of Y and Stockton. This new
garage should help enormously with the
ability of our visitors to have easier access
to parking close by the Medical Center.
Our new class of interns began their duties
and studies in late June and are all
doing very well. They come to us from
Ohio, Georgia, Texas, W. Virginia, Nevada
and, of course, California, including three
from UC Davis. We also have new Pediatric
fellows in Neonatology, Pediatric Endocrinology,
and Child Behavior and Development.
In September the Pediatric Hematology
and Oncology group will welcome Dr. Jong
Hee Chung (“Jo”), who recently finished
her fellowship at Oakland Children’s. In
General Academic Pediatrics, Rina Shah
(Hospitalist) and Mohammed “Mo” Mortazavi
(Clinic and Nursery, Sports Medicine)
are joining us as well. We are also very
pleased to tell you that Pediatric Gastroenterology
has also been rejuvenated with
the additions of Drs. David Kawatu (Chief
of the Section), Johann Peterson, and Allison
Wong, and the clinics are literally
booming.
As I mentioned in my last newsletter, Dr.
Robin Steinhorn, an internationally known
neonatologist and current Vice Chair of
Pediatrics at Northwestern University has
agreed to join us as the next Chair of our
Department as of November 1, 2012. Dr.
Steinhorn will be the recipient of the Dennis
and Nancy Marks Endowed Chair in
Pediatrics. We are very excited to have
Dr. Steinhorn and her husband, David,
who is a Pediatric Critical Care physician,
join us!
Lastly, you may have heard that our UC
Davis Children’s Hospital entered the
ranks of “Top 50 Children’s Hospitals” in
the recent data published by US News and
World Report. We ranked in the top 50 in
Pediatric Endocrinology, Nephrology, Urology,
and Orthopedics (this last category
partnered with Shriners Hospitals for Children,
Sacramento)

for two years as member of the
Committee on Pediatric Workforce
(COPW) by the American Academy
of Pediatrics.
Congratulations to Juan Trujano,
who on June 5 received an Employee
Excellence Award for Excellence
in Teamwork/Collaboration for
his outstanding work on the Meaningful
Use project (a federallyfunded
program, emphasizing improving
quality of health care, initiated
by the Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services)! This was a
highly competitive process as HR
received over 150 nominations.

Microbiota and Mucosal Health”
team (P.I., Satya Dandakar) and Dr.
Tarantal is a member of the “UC
Davis Center of Excellence in Translational
Molecular Imaging” team
(P.I., Dr. Simon Cherry).
Welcome new Pediatric Chief Residents Jean Pearce and Jacob Henderson.
Please welcome new PGY2 Kristina Stillwell and the Class of 2015 - Thea
Bregman, Kim Cheong, Manpreet Dhillon, Theresa Kim, Cami Le, Mikah
Owen, Pam Pablico, Mitch Ratanasen, Karl Reiber, Kristin Sohn, and Tammy
Woo.
A big thank you to out-going Chief Residents Carrie Gardner and Mark
Ratanasen. Both Mark and Carrie now practice general out-patient pediatrics
at Kaiser in South Sacramento.
Noon Conference UPDATE: On July 6th, Department of Pediatrics Residents
transitioned to a new block conference schedule. Former daily noon conferences
are now held every Friday from 12 noon to 3 pm.

New Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
Mary Wyckoff , RN, MSN, PhD, ACNP- BC, FNP- BC, CCNS, CCRN had
joined the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner team. Mary has been a nurse
since 1985 and has an extensive Level III Neonatal background, including
time as a bedside clinician, transport nurse , nurse manager and a
Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. Mary has also worked with adult and pediatric
patients in acute care and the surgical intensive care settings. Mary
is one of the advisors and authors of the nationally recognized PICC
training program that clinicians at UC Davis are trained under. She
brings with her a passion for end of life care and is a certified ELNAC
(End of Life Nursing Care) instructor.
