PAGE 8 EAST COUNTY GAZETTE MARCH 29, 2012InspirationA grandparent’s day at the parkby Rev. James L. SnyderFun is a relative quantity. One person’s fun maybe somebody else’sdrudgery and pain. I knowsomeone, and her name shallremain anonymous, whose ideaof fun is rooting through thriftstores all day long. That conceptof fun has never darkened theshadowy corridors of my mind. The idea of spending timein the park has to be amendedto include one very importantingredient. On my own, I probablywould not even think ofgoing to the park. Not that I donot like the park, I just wouldnot come up with the idea allby myself. Then, the important equationof fun is a little granddaughter.A day at the park by myselfdoes not equal to very muchfun. After all, I have talked tomyself and I am rather boring. IEl Cajon’s ‘Piano Lady’Diana DeniseNadel of Coronado,California, passedaway on February29, 2012.Diana was bornon August 21, 1941in Harrisburg, PA,the daughter ofRuth and WilliamDayton. Diana wasa graduate of Carnegie-MellonUniversityin Pittsburgh,PA with degrees inMusic and MusicEducation. She wasa member of KappaKappa Gamma Sorority and was crowned HomecomingQueen. She was an accomplished pianist and harpist, skilledat both performance and teaching.Diana’s gift was that she touched the lives of hundreds ofchildren and adults to whom she taught piano, harp, and guitarlessons at her piano conservatory in El Cajon and Coronado,CA for over 40 years. A member of the Music Teachers’ Associationof California, she was actively teaching piano untilthe time of her death.Diana was an involved community volunteer, with particularemphasis on child abuse prevention, devoting her time andtalent to Friends of Children United Society for several decades. She loved the beach and made it her home for the past 25years. She was a member of the Coronado Cays Yacht Cluband adored boating with friends. An animal lover at heart, she leaves behind her loyal dog“Muff.”Diana was a beautiful woman known for her generosity oftime and spirit. She had the ability to speak with anyone andto light up a room. She is survived by her sister, Patricia Hardy of Tampa, Florida;daughters, Amy Slotin of Gainesville, Georgia, and Paige Carasof Austin, Texas; grandchildren Kelly, Taylor, and Chelsea Slotin, and James and Ashley Caras; and many nieces and nephews.Diana will be greatly missed by her family, her devotedfriends, and the countless students she inspired over the years.A ceremony celebrating Diana’s life will take place in Coronadoon April 28th. If you would like to attend please RSVPor to return loaned instruments to the family, please email:Livetoski@hotmail.com. In lieu of flowers, please considermaking a donation in Diana’s memory to the San Diego HumaneSociety by calling 619-243-3401 or www.sfhumane.orgin Diana’s memory.have heard all my stories beforeand by the time, I tell myself thestory for the 19th time it is nolonger funny.A day at the park with thegranddaughter does equal fun.I think grandchildren areGod’s way of reminding grandfathershow much energy we donot have and, for that matter, never had.The date was set and my wifeand I set off to take our littlegranddaughter to the park. Onthe main features of this parkwas a merry-go-round. I amrather certain they had merrygo-roundwhen I was a childbut for the life of me, I cannotremember the last time I tooka spin.As we set out for our destinationin the park, I nonchalantlytold the little granddaughter thatthere was a merry-go-round inthe park. That was the end ofmy talk for the trip. The wholeway there, all she could talkabout was the merry-go-roundand how fast it went in howmany ponies there were. By thetime we got to the merry-goroundI had learned about allthere is to know about a merrygo-roundfrom a six-year-old’sviewpoint.According to her, the merrygo-roundis about the mostfun you could ever have in thewhole wide world. And, sheemphasized, “I’m serious.”We rounded the corner, beforeus was the park and inthe middle of the park was thismysterious, mystical merry-goround.It elicited a deep heartfelt“Wow,” from the youngermember of our walking troop. She immediately began runningand pulling me along tothe point where I had to walka little faster than I normallywalk. I mean, at my age runningis completely out of thequestion. And so, she ran, Ishuffled enthusiastically andbefore long we were in front ofthe merry-go-round.“Isn’t it beautiful, grandpa,”she almost whispered. Wedid not stand long admiringthe merry-go-round. She letout a squeal and said, “Comeon, grandpa. Let’s go ride themerry-go-round.”My plans were very simple. Iwould let her get on the merrygo-round,pay for the ticket, sitdown on the bench and watchher go round and round andround. Well, that was my plan. She, on the other hand, hadother plans. With almost superhumanforce she drug me pass theadmission gate, I hardly hadenough time to pay for the rideand to the pony she was goingto ride. “This is my pony, grandpa. Where’s yours?”I quickly searched my plansand could nowhere find anynotation about riding a ponyon a merry-go-round on thisparticular day. Instead, I helpedher up on her pony and I stoodby her and said, “We’ll do thisone together.” She was too excitedabout riding the merry-goroundthat she did not respond.I grabbed hold of one partof the pony, right next to uswas another pony and I heldonto that.“Are we ready to go, grandpa?”No sooner had she saidthat until the bell rang and themerry-go-round began goinground. And round. And round.Being grateful that we havefinished our ride, I proceededto disengage her from the pony. However, that was not her plan.“Oh, grandpa, just one moretime.”The problem with grandfathersis that nowhere in theirvocabulary lurks in any fashionany sound resembling “no.”Consequently, we went roundon the merry-go-round “justone more time.”I learned a deep lesson thatafternoon. When a little granddaughtersays “just one moretime,” it is not in any literalsense of the word that they sayit. I’m not prepared to say howmany times we went on thatmerry-go-round, needless tosay, by the end of the afternoonI was in a complete whirl notknowing whither I was comingor whither I was going. As we walked over to getour ice cream treat, I rememberedwhat the apostle Paulsaid about Timothy. “And thatfrom a child thou hast knownthe holy scriptures, which areable to make thee wise untosalvation through faith whichis in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy3:15( KJV ).Dear Dr. LuaunaDear Readers,Many people ask meimportant questionsabout prayer because the Lordhas called me to create a PrayerMountain in the United States. How do I pray? What are thekeys in prayer? Does God reallyhear our prayers? Why aresome prayers never answered? The first thing I do everymorning is pray. I inquire ofthe Lord for every question, problem, and situation; even ingood times. Then I search His scriptures. Why do I proceedthat way? Because Jesus said the Holy Spirit is the Spirit ofTruth and He will remind us of Christ’s teachings, John 14.I found some very powerful verses on this subject, the firstone gave me a powerful key to prayer, prayer is not abouttalking to God, although that is important. Prayer is abouthearing, fine tuning the skill of listening. The answer to everyprayer will always come to those who hear:Psalm 85:8-9, “I will hear what God the Lord will speak, for He will speak peace to His people and to His saints; butlet them not turn back to folly. Surely His salvation is nearto those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land.”This verse was written by a Chief Musician, in other wordsa man of prayer of worship. The next verse was written by a wise man, King Solomon,a man who spoke from the wisdom of heaven:Ecclesiastes 5:1, “Walk prudently when you go to thehouse of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give thesacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil. Donot be rash with your mouth, and let now your heart utteranything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and youon the earth; therefore let your words be few. While his advice may seem harsh, he is speaking as aKing who is warning us, exhorting us not to be foolish whenwe come before Almighty God in our prayer time. Whenwarnings from experienced and wise people, are ignored, the consequences are always destructive. The following verses speak for themselves:Proverbs 22:17-21, “Incline your ear and hear the wordsof the wise, and apply your heart to my knowledge; for it isa pleasant thing if you keep them within you; let them all befixed upon your lips, so that your trust may be in the Lord;I have instructed you today, even you. Have I not written toyou excellent things of counsels and knowledge that I maymake you know the certainty of the words of truth, that youmay answer words of truth to those who send to you?”Finally, James 1:19-20, “So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousnessof God.”This advice from God’s Spirit and Holy Word will help usas we commit ourselves to consistent prayer. The Lord hasanswered so many prayers in my life and for our ministry. Please join us at A Touch From Above Prayer Mountain tolearn how to pray and hear the voice of God. But how many are aware of what’sacceptable or not about a credit report when submitting a rental application. Here are some guidelines that our company applies to credit reports we review:Low Risk (726-830): Excellent credit rating, pay their bills on time, no collections ornegative notations on credit history. We like these applications.Medium-Low Risk (700-725): Very good credit rating, pay their bills on time, nocollections or negative notations on credit history, may have a couple of aged slow paysor applied for a loan or credit recently that dropped the score a bit. We like these applicationsas well.Local Skechers store representatives were joined by Viejas tribal officials, Chamber of Commercemembers and area residents for a ribbon cutting and Grand Opening ceremony at the newSkechers store at Viejas Outlets Monday.Medium Risk (626-699): Decent credit rating, pay most bills on time, no collectionsor negative notation on the credit history, may have a couple of aged slow pays or appliedfor a loan or credit recently that dropped the score a bit. MARCH 29, 2012 EAST COUNTY GAZETTE PAGE 13— AT THE MOVIES —The hand-held camera is not a friend to ‘Hunger Games’Review by James ColtHarrisonDespite the distastefultheme of teen-agershunting and killingother teens, The Hunger Gamesis the most anticipated film ofthe year for fans of the SuzanneCollins book trilogy. Harkingback to the Roman times andthe coliseum-type setting, thistime the arena turns out to bethe forests of Asheville, NorthCarolina.Because of a rebellion 70years ago, the nation of Panemhas risen like a phoenix out ofthe ruins of what used to bethe United States. To keep thepeople from uprising again, araffle is held in which a boy andgirl ages 12-18 from each districtmust fight to the death, with thewinner never having to worryabout food or shelter ever again. Most of the populace looksas though they are dressed indowdy clothes of the 1930sDepression era and are formerresidents of the Ozarks. Butsomehow Katniss Everdeen (abrown-haired Jennifer Lawrence)has turned out to bea natural teen-age beauty. The boys viying for her attentioninclude Gale (AustralianLiam Hemsworth), Peeta (JoshHutcherson), and Cato (AlexanderLudwig).Katniss is spunky, fierce, intelligent, skilled, and determined. She volunteers to take the placeof her younger sister Primrose(Willow Shields) in the games.Katniss and Peeta will representtheir district against bigger andolder contestants, or “tributes,”in the games. It’s rare that Hollywood takeschances on a female to be thelead in a $100 million film, butat age 20. Lawrence takes theentire film on her shoulders.Had she not been capable, thefilm might have fallen with athud, but she’s up to the taskand is terrific. The studio’s faithin her is justified. Initially rathershy when thrust into the forestto hide or kill, Katniss graduallyevolves into someone to contendwith as she is skilled withthe bow and arrow. The filmcleverly disguises Katniss actuallykilling people, so we are notrebuffed by her character. She’stough and clever enough to stayalive by doing what she must.Peeta seems to play a significantrole in Katniss’ younger lifewhen she was starving as wesee in flashbacks. Hutchersonis young enough to show thathang-dog and puppy love facewhen appropriate. He hits theright notes in his scenes withLawrence and is secure enoughto show vulnerability to herstrength.Hemsworth landed the mostsignificant role of his young andshort career. The relationshipof his character Gale with thatof Katniss is pivotal. They grewup together and learned to huntand survive in the forest. This allproved to be crucial in Katniss’sgames period when Gale wasleft at home. He also yearns tobe even closer to her now.Stanley Tucci plays CaesarFlickerman, an over-the-topTV host and narrator of theHunger Games. Decked out ina futuristic version of a black18 th century wig and enhancedsparkling white teeth, Tucciunctuously commands everyscene and should be on the listof Best Supporting Actors comenext year’s awards.Another outstanding supportingrole is that of ElizabethBanks’ Effie Trinket (a tributeto Edgar Bergin’s Effie Klinkerradio dummy character perhaps?).Banks is completelyunrecognizable plastered inthick white makeup and “beestung”red lips (harking back tothe silent films). She plays anescort to the kids at the Games.Other cast members somewhatwasted are talented WesBentley as Seneca Crane; TobyJones as Claudius Templesmith,Hunger GamesStudio: LionsgateGazette Grade: B+MPAA: “PG-13” for intensive violent thematicmaterial and disturbing images all involvingteenagers.Who Should Go: Fans of the booksCooking up Memories at Bonny’s CafeLots of Charbroiled Burgers & Sandwiches for every taste!Fluffy 3-Egg Omelettes, Pancakes, Waffles,Chicken fried Steak & Eggs... and so much more!Best Southern Style Biscuits and Gravy in all of East CountyFresh Home-Made Chili, Soups and SaladsJennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth star in Hunger Games. Photo Credit: Murray Close/Lionsgatethe man throwing switches atthe control board and DonaldSutherland as President CoriolanusSnow, in for a few scenes.Lenny Kravitz, mostly knownas a musician, plays one of hisrare film roles as Cinna, Katniss’make-up artist. The hand-held cameraworkby cinematographer Tom Sternand editing by Stephen Mirrioneand Juliette Welfing is hideous,to put it kindly. It is so shakyin some scenes that gobblingan entire bottle of Dramaminewill not lessen the blowing ofchunks. The only positive effectthe Jell-o-jiggling camera doesdo is lessen the blood and gorebecause your eyes can’t focuson the hacking and slashing ofnubile teen-age bodies.Despite the 142 minutes ofrunning time, the film does notdrag and is rather entertainingeven with the unpalatable maintheme. In this writer’s opinionthe film is a condemnation ofwar despite the spoils for thevictor.BRING IN THIS AD FOR 10% OFF ANY FLOOROR 1 YEAR INTEREST FREE FINANCING*Pernicano’sSince 1946Italian RestaurantPizzaCelebratingover65 Yearsof service to East County dinersof service to EastCounty diners$4 00 offlargepizzaor$2 00 off1130 BroadwEl Cajon, CA 92Phone: (619) 444Fax: (619) 444-5smallpizzae-mail: ads@ecgazetwith couponexp. 04/30/12LUNCHSPECIALS(Includes Salad and Garlic Bread)Spaghetti......................... $7.95Lasagna........................... $8.95DinnerSpecials(Includes Salad and dinner roll)Monday:Lasagna & Spaghetti.... $10.95Tuesday:Zucchini Parmigiana.... $10.95Wednesday:Eggplant Parmigiana... $10.95Thursday:Ravioli (meat or cheese).$9.50Friday:Tortellini (chicken, cheese orspinach............................ $8.85Saturday:Half & Half....................... $8.85Sunday:Lasagna........................ .$10.45Please signOk to printOk to printNeed seconCelebrating 18 Yearsin El Cajon!Try our delicious Monte Cristo Sandwich!sOpen for Breakfast and Lunch everyday 7AM-2PM596 Broadway, El Cajon • (619) 579-3464All major credit cards acceptedHomestyle Cooking at its Best!CATERING FOR PICK UP,UP TO 100 PEOPLEORDERS TO GO619-444-45461588 E.
