History of the University of SaskatchewanCollege Building Construction - November, 1911The University of Saskatchewan was established on April 3, 1907, only 18months after Saskatchewan became a province.The people of the province were instrumental in shaping the new University.The provincial government requested all residents who were graduates ofa Canadian or British university to form the Þrst Convocation and elect theUniversity’s Senate. The Senate, in turn, elected Þve members to the Þrst Boardof Governors, while the province appointed three. In 1908, the Board selectedProfessor Walter Charles Murray as the Þrst President.Classes in Arts and Science began in September, 1909, in downtown Saskatoon.Construction of the campus began in 1910 and the Þrst buildings wereoccupied in the fall of 1912. They included the College Building (AdministrationBuilding), Saskatchewan Hall (a student residence), residences for the Dean ofAgriculture and the President, a laboratory for Engineering and a number of farmbuildings.From the beginning, the University established an emphasis on research andteaching in a context of community service, and encouraged co-operationamong departments and divisions in tackling common problems. Thedevelopment of rust-resistant strains of wheat, for example, initiated by theUniversity and federal and provincial research agencies, has been of untoldvalue to the prairie economy.The University of Saskatchewan overlooks the South Saskatchewan River from a755 hectare site.
