GREEN BAY 35, KANSAS CITY 10Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Sunday, Jan. 15, 1967; Attendance: 61,946; Time: 2:37; Weather: 72° F; sunny, hazyThe Packers launched the Super Bowl series by whipping Kansas City’s AFL champions, 35-10, behind Bart Starr,Max McGee and a key interception by All-Pro safety Willie Wood.Vince Lombardi’s repeating NFL champions broke open the game with three second-half touchdowns. Wood setup the first, returning an interception 50 yards to the Chiefs’ 5, with the Packers up only 14-10. Len Dawson’s passwas intended for Kansas City tight end Fred Arbanas.McGee, replacing Boyd Dowler (injured on the Packers’ first series), after having caught only four passes allseason, snared seven from Starr for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Elijah Pitts ran for two other scores, one on a5-yard run in the third quarter, the other on a 1-yard bolt in the final period.The Chiefs’ lone touchdown came on a 7-yard pass from Dawson to Curtis McClinton.Starr, the game’s first MVP, completed 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards and two TDs. The aging McGee caught both scores, 37 yards inthe first quarter and a 13-yard catch in the decisive third period.The Packers collected $15,000 per man and the Chiefs $7,500 apiece – the largest single-game shares inthe history of team sports at the time. The game was not a sellout; more than 30,000 seats remained empty.Kansas City ChiefsGreen Bay PackersOffense Defense Offense DefenseLE 88 C.Burford LE 75 J.Mays LE 84 C.Dale LE 87 W.DavisLT 77 J.Tyrer LT 58 A.Rice LT 76 B.Skoronski LT 77 R.KostelnikLG 71 E.Budde RT 86 B.Buchanan LG 63 F.Thurston RT 74 H.JordanC 66 W.Frazier RE 85 C.Hurston C 50 B.Curry RE 82 L.AldridgeRG 64 C.Merz LLB 78 B.Bell RG 64 J.Kramer LLB 89 D.RobinsonRT 73 D.Hill MLB 69 S.Headrick RT 75 F.Gregg MLB 66 R.NitschkeRE 84 F.Arbanas RLB 55 E.Holub RE 81 M.Fleming RLB 60 L.CaffeyQB 16 L.Dawson LC 24 F.Williamson QB 15 B.Starr LC 26 H.AdderleyHB 21 M.Garrett RC 22 W.Mitchell HB 22 E.Pitts RC 21 B.JeterFB 32 C.McClinton LS 20 B.Hunt FB 31 J.Taylor LS 40 T.BrownFL 89 O.Taylor RS 42 J.Robinson SE 86 B.Dowler RS 24 W.WoodReferee: Norm Schachter (NFL)Max McGee1 2 3 4 TotalKansas City . . . . . . . 0 10 0 0 — 10Green Bay . . . . . . . . 7 7 14 7 — 35Team Qtr Time Play Description (Extra Point) (Drive Info) KC GBPackers 1 6:04 M.McGee 37 yd. pass from B.Starr (D.Chandler kick) (6-80, 3:06) . . 0 7Chiefs 2 10:40 C.McClinton 7 yd. pass from L.Dawson (M.Mercer kick) (6-66, 3:44) . . 7 7Packers 2 4:37 J.Taylor 14 yd. run (D.Chandler kick) (13-73, 6:03) . . . . . . . . 7 14Chiefs 2 0:54 M.Mercer 31 yd.
