VOL. 55 March, 2006 Number 3~ GENERAL MEETING ~ MARCH 15TH ~2006 Officers & Board Members of MLCAWork Bee ~ March 19th

PRESIDENT’S COLUMNAlrighty then, it’s March and we will soon beout of the winter season. February is theshortest month, but this year seemed shorteryet. I think I had a meeting or event everyday of the entire month, but they were allproductive meetings and I think we are movingforward. Remember in my first article, Iwrote that we are headed for some seriousbelt tightening; well, I may not have manyfriends left when it all takes effect, but wewill be more financially stable, I hope. Please don’t hate me for the changes, jump inand help with the cost cutting to help the club operate more efficiently, after all, this place does belong to all the members equally. It’s yourbank account too.The January Work Bee was almost overwhelming. We had 70 peoplecome out to work and we really got a lot of projects caught up that day!The following Tuesday at Bingo, we finally had enough workers showup so that every job had a volunteer to cover each position. Thank you.I don’t know if this is a sign of things to come, but I am certainly gladto see this happening, as we have been short on help for a long time. Westill have a lot of open maintenance issues that we need to address, so Ihope we can continue with this kind of work force showing up to help.It is a good feeling when we all work together and get the job done, andit helps answer the often asked question, “why do I belong to this club”?January also saw the annual Worker’s Appreciation Party where the outgoing past President, Officers, and Board recognized the New Memberof the Year, John Brandt; The Member of the Year, Gary Chase; and theWalter Horstman Achievement Award Winner, Tony Potter. These areall people who have gone way above and beyond with hard work anddedication. Congratulations and thank you all. Oh yeah! And it was agreat party as well, my wife and I certainly had a good time.February started off with a huge success, thanks to Andy Willetts andfamily. The Super Bowl Party is one of our best parties of the year. There were nice fat 50/50 raffles, loads of good food (which by the wayis all we asked of the participants, to bring a dish!) and some very niceTVs were also raffled off. Of course, the TVs went through some durabilitytesting because we watched the game on them before giving themaway. I won’t embarrass anybody by saying who won them, but Barryand Anna sure are lucky when it comes to TV raffles.I am really happy and proud to see a lot of long time members andfriends of mine coming back to Multi-Lakes and getting involved again. There are more names than I can mention here, and surely more peoplethan I could afford to by a beer for. We are not really just a bunch of“Old Dudes” and as a newer member, if you see an older memberaround working on a project, introduce yourself, offer to help and seewhat I mean. We want to get you involved so you feel comfortable andwant to get on a committee. We especially need help on some of ourFish Fry crews, one of the long time crews is down to just 3 people andthey are scheduled for the first Friday of Lent! If you can be availableto work on a crew every 7th Friday, where you can do a little work andhave some fun, call me or Sam Mullins, please. You will also see in theBoard Minutes that we will be adding another deep fryer to the kitchenon Friday nights for two reasons. One to lighten the load on the crewsthat cook, and second, to see if we can reduce the waiting line for ourcustomers.Lastly, I am going to try and update the fellowship board in the frontentrance. I will do my best to keep fresh photos, some with humorouscaptions posted for all to see what kind of fun we have around the club.Super Bowl Party is on display now. In case you have read the historian’scolumns and can’t quite put a face with that name, MickeyMcCanham is the guy in the picture on the board with the slightly oversizedjersey on, smiling like a little boy wearing his dad’s pjs.Come out and have some fun, you’ll see why you belong to this club.MULTI-LAKER DEADLINEDeadline for articles for the April ‘06 Multi-Laker Magazineis Wednesday, March 15, 2006.NOTE: All copy must be typed, double-spaced and approved by the Editor.3860 Newton Rd.363-9109THE MULTI-LAKER(USPS) 350-060Published Monthly by theMulti-Lakes Conservation AssociationOffice Fax: 248-363-8092Club Manager - Barry AndersonOffice Manager - Terry MartinCLUBHOUSE - 248-363-9109Skeet and Trap Building - 248-363-8811Indoor Range House - 248-360-3965Sporting Clays - 248-360-2765Member Michigan United Conservation ClubsMichigan Coalition for Responsible Gun OwnersPeriodicals Postage Paid at Walled Lake, MI 48390www.multilakes.comCommerce Twp.48382Subscription Rates:Members - $12.00 of the members Annual Dues is paid as a year’ssubscription to The Multi-Laker.Non-members - $15.00 per year payable in advance.2006 OFFICERSPRESIDENT .................................. After many monthsof planning and so many people working together, this year’s Wild Game Dinner has demonstrated once again the spirit of Multi-LakesConservation Club. It’s with great pride that I acknowledge all those involved in helping to make this a truly unique dining experience, offering a wide variety of wild game to tantalize your taste buds, and to those who are already looking ahead to next year.We can’t have a wild game dinner without wild game, so to all those who shared in the prosperity of their hunts – THANK YOU!To the cooking staff and wild game committee who helped, usually at a moment’s notice, in the processing of the deer, fish, and pheasantsreceived– THANK YOU!To IMP Printing for meeting all our printing needs with fast, accurate, and efficient service. Jr. Rifle UpdateWe had a welcomed increase of young boys and girls participatingin Multi-Lakes Junior Rifle Program. We are veryhappy to see so many young people take advantage of oneof Multi-Lakes shooting disciplines. With so many young shooters at different skill levels thereis a need for enough eyes on the firing line. So when a newyoungster comes in, someone must leave the range in orderto give them our basic rifle and safety talk. In the past,we have been lucky to have someone present to help on theline. But we cannot leave an important thing like “safety” to“chance.” So we are implementing a new policy with youngsterswho wish to participate in the Junior Rifle Program. From now on, new shooters can come in on the secondMonday of each month in order to get their safety talk.We have arranged to have additional help. This will leavenothing to “chance.”We would like to take this time to thank all the Multi-Lakemembers who have helped this year to make this programa success. Multi-Laker Story, by Arlen Alexander - Member #527Just Like A FishMy hunting companion had some shirt tail Swedish relatives living in the far western portion of the upper peninsulaof Michigan in the town of Ironwood. My friend invited himself and me to go hunting with his relative and histwo companions. One fellow was a bricklayer, another was a logger, and the third had never had a job. He wasmarried, and three children, and lived in a $3000 house. This fellow had shot twelve illegal deer that year in hisyard. The object of his friends was to have him shoot one legal deer. One of our group had a family log cabin on county land. No one else could build on this land, but the cabin wasin the family before it was redistricted, so it was allowed to stand. When we arrived at the cabin, via a barely visiblemile long two track trail through a frozen cattail swamp, the snow was already fourteen inches deep, and itwas still snowing. It had a tar paper outhouse about fifty feet from the cabin. Our water to drink and cook withwas brought in a large plastic jug. If we needed other water we got it from a two foot wide road tile turned on endand sunk in the soil just outside the cabin. For lighting, we had gas lanterns. Heat was from a big wood stove inthe center of the room. Above it hung a bed spring suspended from the ceiling to dry wet clothes on. I slept ona mattress on the floor next to the wood pile. A couple of double bunks lined the other walls. It was primitive, butcomfortable. A bear had previously eaten one corner of the cabin, which we had to repair. My hunting companionwas upset over the location of his bunk, the location of the wood stove, and the location of the cabin door. After he ran out of beer (I don’t drink because of health problems) he borrowed their beer and complainedbecause it wasn’t like his. After two days of snowing, the young men informed me that if I wanted to get my truck out before next spring, I’dbetter move it out now. Even though all four wheels drove at the same time (a true 4x4 specially built) my truckbent a skid plate and other under body parts getting out. I left it at the main road and snowmobiled back to thecabin. Our cabin name was the “Silver Bullet”. As the deer kill was broadcast over the radio each day, a namefor each camp made it easier to track the daily deer kill in the area. The hosts had a spot for me to hunt deer. It was on top of a rocky ridge overlooking a big valley. A bait pile wasset out for me at the bottom of my rocky outlook. Getting to my rocky perch was a quarter mile walk down a pathin the snow, made for me by a snowmobile. Sitting on my rock, I spotted a big deer, not on my bait, but on thefar side of the valley walking through the deep snow. The deer was about a hundred fifty yards away. As I shot,he dropped instantly in the deep snow. I was using a 140 grain bullet in a 7M-08 Browning A-Bolt rifle. Climbingdown from my stand, I walked through the deep snow to tag my deer. After looking for some time, and not findingmy deer, I went back to my spot to see if I could pin-point, between what trees, the deer had fell. After threetrips back and forth, the deer was found in deep snow that had covered him where he fell. He had been shotthrough the heart. Before cleaning the deer, I went back to the cabin for a snowmobile to help drag the deer backto camp. Upon arriving at the deer, the other young hunter said I had to clean the deer, before he would drag thedeer back to the cabin for me. He was a native of the Upper Peninsula, and really wanted to see if I could cleana deer. To his satisfaction the job was completed and the drag back began.Upon arriving at the cabin, we hung the deer on the deer pole. The other hunters from the camp, upon seeingthe deer, were saying out loud, “Just like a fish,” as I had opened up the deer all the way up to its chin. They justmade a very small opening. My deer was propped open with a stick, so the game would cool, plus making it easierto clean. One of the young men was a good cook, and made sauerbraten from the back strap tenderloin. He used lots ofbutter and sour cream. It was excellent.Although the deer was huge, the rack was small. We shot six deer in four days, and won the award for the mostsuccessful deer camp. Everyone was very proud, as it was announced over the radio for all camps and the townto hear. The young men from our camp had also prepared a blind and bait in the center of a big swamp for my companion. He was upset because I had shot a deer first, and refused to sit in his blind, and moved to my spot instead. As luck would have it, he shot a nice buck walking along the bottom of the hill my stand was on. It then took twoextra days for him to have it butchered and flash frozen. (Two days which I didn’t have money or time for).We put my mattress and gear on a snowmobile for the trip back to my Ford truck. Back in town, I gave my deerto one of our group who had a young family, and although he also shot a deer he could use the extra meat. Onthe way home, my traveling companion wanted to add ice to my new truck, so his deer wouldn’t melt all over thetruck floor.Well, we made it home, with our relationship strained to the limit, and with his deer intact. I’m still in touch withthe young men in the U.P. They say deer have been scarce for the last few years in the upper.13

The ground is starting to dry out and we are getting eager to do something with the garden. If youhave a bird feeder, I hope you put it outside a frequently used window. Such as the kitchen. Because, if you planted a few crocus bulbslast fall, they will start to grow through the snow. That is, if they were planted on the south /southwest side of the house. You will haveto wait until April or early May to see any grape hyacinths or other bulbs. Spring is starting to show. Some of the plants have buds thatare swelling. The days are a little longer, a little warmer and there is a noticeable number of birds singing. Officially spring starts on the20th of March.Do not work on the lawn if the ground is too wet. When the ground is dry enough, some upkeep work can be done. Raking the lawnis always a good place to start. Depending on the time available to you, rake the lawn in sections. Don’t try to do it all in one night. Youwant to remove build-ups of old grass cuttings, leaves and trash that has blown in. Another reason to rake the lawn is the raising of thegrass blades that were matted down by snow. This will allow sun light to reach the soil, aiding in the warming and drying of the lawn. Ifthe shrub forsythia is blooming in your area, you could put down a pre-emergence herbicide. Be sure to read the label thoroughly. Somepre-emergent herbicides should not be used too early. The shrubbery beds should be raked also. Gently rake out the leaves and trash that has blown in during the winter. While raking, beon the look out for emerging bulbs like crocus. If new shoots of bulbs on the south or south / west side of the house are uncovered, theyshould be covered again with some snow or leaves. If left uncovered, the sun will encourage their early growth and they could be damagedby the bitter night cold. During the raking look for winter damage. This might be broken limbs, rabbit, vole or winter kill. Brokenlimbs can be pruned out. Be careful with the winter kill. As shrubs come out of winter, their leaves may suddenly turn yellow. Do not betoo hasty to prune out the winter kill. The stems may still be alive and produce new leaves. Do not prune spring flowering shrubs toohard. As you prune, the flower buds are being removed, and you might not have any flowers left. Privet and spirea plants or hedges canbe cut down to within eight inches of the ground. this will rejuvenate the plants and stimulate new stems.Fruit tree pruning can still be done in March. The wounds caused by pruning will still have time to dry before the growing season. Awound that dries will not produce water sprouts(suckers). While pruning, look for insect egg masses. You could find tent caterpillar eggmasses and oystershell or San Jose scale. Tent caterpillar looks like burnt marshmallow on the underside of a limb. It is black with hundredsof tiny dimples. There is an egg at the bottom of each dimple. Oystershell scale is grey and looks like a tiny oystershell. San Josescale is pinhead size, circular in shape and brownish grey. You can wrap your hand in a piece of burlap and wipe them off of a limb, orspray dormant oil. Only apply dormant oil when plants are dormant and the temperature is above freezing. Some dormant oils are called60 second dormant oil. Referring to the amount of time needed for the oil and water mixture to dry. The oil coating will prevent emerginginsects from getting any oxygen and they will die. Do not spray dormant oil on evergreens.March is a good month to be outdoors and observe mature trees. The leaves are not hiding the branch structure. At least, most treeshave shed their leaves. Some American Beech, English White Oak, black oak, red oak and some hornbeam still carry a few leaves. Youcan see the difference between an apple and a crab apple. The apple, if left alone will grow tall and has a fairly smooth bark. The crabapple is usually shorter, with pretty rough bark. One of the more common crab apple is the Sargent Crab Apple (Malus Sargentia). Thistree usually still has cranberry sized fruit hanging on its fruit spurs, this time of year. If you can still find an Ash tree. It is easy to see thedifference between an ash and a Mountain Ash. The ash usually has a central trunk, a strong root system and lightly furrowed bark. TheMountain Ash, which is not an ash, has several leaders, a very poor root system and smooth apple-like bark. The ash is Fraximus Albaand the Mountain Ash is Sorbus Accupari. Sorbus is not an ash. It is a rowan, which puts it in the apple and rose family.Every year in March I mention dehorning. When a branch, limb or leader is cut back more than one third, it has been dehorned. Thisis bad for the tree. If that part of the tree is that offensive, consider removing the whole branch or limb. Dehorning is some times calledtopping. Don’t do it!It is only acceptable when repairing storm damage or clearing power lines.Don’t forget to look at the spring plant catalogues and try to get your tools ready for spring and summer.See you when the wind shifts!Marty ZarembaMarty Zaremba is a certified Arborist and a member at Multi-Lakes. Marty is also the Chairman of the Tree Committee. Marty has graciously agreed to do a monthly advicecolumn on caring and maintaining trees, shrubs and common plants that are found in Michigan and in most everyone’s yards. We hope you enjoy these tips and use them inthe care of your trees and plants.23
