Nursing Best Practice GuidelinePractice RecommendationsThis best practice guideline is developed on the foundation provided by the following st<strong>and</strong>ards ofpractice of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO):Practice guideline: Consent (CNO, 2004a), which provides an overview of the major features of the legislation,pertinent definitions <strong>and</strong> the steps nurses need <strong>to</strong> take <strong>to</strong> obtain consent. It does not address consentunder the Mental Health Act.Practice guideline: Culturally sensitive care (CNO, 2004b), which guides nurses in problem solving forcommonly encountered culturally sensitive situations.Practice guideline: Disagreeing with the multidisciplinary plan of care: Fact sheet (CNO, 2004c), which wasdeveloped <strong>to</strong> provide direction <strong>to</strong> nurses when they disagree with other care providers regarding the planof care or when they believe the client has not been given informed consent <strong>to</strong> the plan. It provides thenurse with a <strong>to</strong>ol for advocacy.Practice guideline: Guide <strong>to</strong> decide (CNO, 2004d), which was designed <strong>to</strong> assist nurses <strong>to</strong> underst<strong>and</strong> theiraccountability in performing procedures <strong>and</strong> provides a framework for decision making.Practice guideline: Medical directives – Revised 2000 (CNO, 2004e), which may be implemented for a numberof clients when specific conditions are met, <strong>and</strong> when specific circumstances exist.Practice st<strong>and</strong>ard: Confidentiality <strong>and</strong> privacy – personal health information (CNO, 2004f), which provides anoverview of current Ontario legislation, <strong>and</strong> clarifies nursing st<strong>and</strong>ards for confidentiality <strong>and</strong> of privacyhealth information.Practice st<strong>and</strong>ard: Documentation (CNO, 2004g), which outlines nurses’ professional accountability in recordkeeping, <strong>and</strong> the expectations for documentation for all nurses in direct practice.Practice st<strong>and</strong>ard: Ethics (CNO, 2004h), which describes the ethical values that are most important <strong>to</strong> thenursing profession in Ontario.Practice st<strong>and</strong>ard: Infection prevention <strong>and</strong> control (CNO, 2004i), which describes a nurse’s role in infectionprevention <strong>and</strong> control, recognizing that some client care situations may require consultation with anInfection Control Practitioner.Practice st<strong>and</strong>ard: Medication (CNO, 2004j) which provides st<strong>and</strong>ards for nurses <strong>to</strong> administer medicationssafely <strong>and</strong> effectively in all practice settings.19
