The solution: an eletrical main propulsion system which providesextremely low noise levels as there are no large low-speed diesel engines that can be heardat long distance. The same technology was applied to four similar vessels belonging to thesame series.M/S Speciality• 2 x 900 kW main propulsion drives• 350 kW bow thruster drive• 6 x 150 kW cargo pump drives• 3 x 52 kW drives for slop/ballast pumpsCharacteristic of these oil product tankers is the requirementof the lowest possible noise level. Electric motors arequiet compared to their hydraulic alternative. The usefulnessand efficiency of the variable speed control of a fixedblade propeller is clearly better than the fixed speed with avariable angle. Additionally, the fixed speed propeller alwaysruns at the maximum speed, which causes more mechanicalnoise even at partial loads. In these tankers, all propellersare equipped with a fixed space angle (CP) to ensure asufficient noise performance. The main goal is to avoid noisefrom hydraulic machinery when discharching the cargo. Thisis a clear advantage for the neighbourhood, especially atnight time.An electrical main propulsion drive offers numerous importantbenefits over a diesel-engine direct-driven propeller. Forexample, the power generation plant can be optimized, consistingof several smaller units, thus reducing the emissionsof environmentally harmful gases. The motor speed of thetankers´ main propulsion will be controlled by two 900 kWliquid-cooled Vacon NX drives. Speed control also decreasesthe electromechanical stress for the electrical system andprovides flexibility in power generation and distribution. Alltogether four similar vessels belong to the same series.7
