Encouraged by Barry, Jack and his good friend Jim Moynihan decided to donate the proceeds of their annual Christmas luncheon to the new, tuition-free, Jesuit middle school in Roxbury that was serving low-income boys from Boston. Jack’s affinity and admiration for the mission of Nativity Prep remained strong. His quiet acts of kindness to Nativity developed into a lasting family legacy. Born and raised in Belmont with his nine siblings, Jack Mahoney graduated from Northeastern University and went on to pursue a career in the computer industry, working for companies such as IBM and Honeywell. Together with his wife Marcia, they raised five children. After moving several times, the Mahoney Family eventually returned to the Boston area and settled in Dover. Lovingly referred to as “O” by his children and grandchildren, Jack can be described in many ways: a hard worker, a man’s man, a person with a great sense of humor, a golfer, a carpenter, a dedicated Catholic. But most of all, he is described as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Shortly after celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary, Jack Mahoney passed away unexpectedly in February 2007. Because of Jack’s belief in its mission, Nativity Prep was the beneficiary of numerous gifts from family and friends upon his passing. Like many of Nativity’s supporters, Jack Mahoney was introduced to Nativity Prep twenty years ago by Barry Hynes, the school’s founder. established an endowed fund at Nativity. In a letter written to the school in October 2007, John wrote, “My family and I are very excited about supporting your efforts and doing it in a way that honors my dad’s memory and his own strong interest in Nativity Prep.” In June 2010, John significantly enhanced the fund with the addition of a very generous $200,000 gift. Beginning this year, Nativity will draw monies from the fund to support short-term operating needs, and the principal will be reinvested for growth. John’s four siblings – Mark, Ann, Mel and Sally – also contribute to Nativity in their own meaningful ways through personal donations and hometown drives to raise money for new books and other school supplies. Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews continue to support Nativity and honor Jack’s legacy through annual contributions to the Mahoney Fund. Upon moving back to the greater Boston area from Chicago three years ago, Mel reached out to Nativity and offered her services as a volunteer. She first volunteered in the library. Today she serves as the school’s social studies coordinator and SSAT Prep teacher. Along with her husband Brad and their 3 sons, Mel is an integral part of the daily life of Nativity. Although Jack Mahoney is no longer with us today, his legacy lives on. The John H. Mahoney Memorial Fund not only provides a lasting tribute to Jack Mahoney, but also assists Nativity with its need to build a stronger and healthier financial future.
alumni travels - Nativity's 247 graduates continue to make their mark in our community and beyond. Here is a small sampling of the paths that our alumni are traveling along today. Hudson Evei, Class of 96 and current Nativity Prep Trustee: Recently left Pyramid Hotel Group, where he worked as a centralized controller, to begin an MBA program at Dartmouth College's Tuck School of Business. ................................................................................................................................................ Jason Perry, Class of 96: Will be going to Hangzhou, China later this year to speak at the American Lifestyles Expo, where he will be addressing over 50,000 technology venture capitalists about music distribution, entertainment and Amalgam Digital, the East Boston record label he has worked at for the past year. The goal of the Expo is to provide visibility for American companies to Chinese investors and to promote international business. ................................................................................................................................................ Welbis Ortiz, Class of 07: Spent the Spring 2010 semester abroad at The Island School, in Eleuthera, Bahamas. While at The Island School he worked on many environmental research projects dealing with the importance of lemon sharks on the island and composting soil effectively. During the three-month semester he also achieved one of his personal goals, which was to learn how to swim. In fact, in the end, he was able to complete a four-mile open water swim. ................................................................................................................................................ Carlos Romer, Class of 07: Spent one month this past summer in Argentina where he toured the country, learned its customs and traditions and performed community service for the homeless. ................................................................................................................................................ Jovanni Soto, Class of 07: A student at the Boston Arts Academy, Jovanni is currently studying several dance styles including hip-hop, modern and jazz, as well as traditional and contemporary ballet. His normal school day consists of academic classes in the morning and dance classes every afternoon. Outside of school, he also performs with the dance group, Origination Inc. In October he was part of three performances put on for the general public in Wellesley by Origination Inc. student voices My favorite thing about being a Nativity student is... Rashad Everyone gets along as a family. I also like evening study. Charles The friends you meet and the great education you receive. Felipe That every single person here will support you in a time of need. Quang The opportunities and the brotherhood. I have teachers and friends who care for me, and I get a great education. Maximo The nice staff and the way we pray each and every day. Anthony That we have the privilege to do activities here that other schools do not offer. Mason I get a lot more opportunities here than I did at my old school. Osman The dress code and that we have student sponsors.
