Originally from Ethiopia, the Goso family sought refuge in Sudan to escape the civil war, famine and disease that plagued their homeland. Gadisa was born in Sudan during this time, and the family obtained United States visas in a government sponsored lottery program. The courageous Gosos moved to Minnesota where a sponsoring church helped them to learn English, find an apartment and prepare resumes to look for jobs. The family moved from Minnesota to Boston later that year; Hambisa was born shortly after. The Goso children attended their local public elementary school in Boston, which did not provide enough of an academic challenge for them. The family felt that the expectations and standards for the students were low, and the Goso boys were more advanced than most of their peers. Gadisa and Hambisa Goso, brothers and graduates of Nativity Prep have dedicated themselves to the school that made a meaningful and long lasting impact on their lives. ..................................................................... The Goso parents were so impressed with the Nativity program after Gadisa enrolled, that they decided it was definitely the place they wanted Hambisa to attend as well. ..................................................................... Although it was an adjustment to go to a new school, both boys rose to the occasion. Gadisa and Hambisa credit Nativity Prep as the place where they embraced many of the morals and values that guide their lives today. They both recall with enthusiasm the many activities they participated in as students at Nativity Prep. Kayaking, sailing, visiting the Cape and spending one month away at overnight summer camp were some of the highlights of their youth. According to Gadisa, “Growing up in the inner-city of Boston we lived in a haphazard bubble. Nativity Prep provided us with a chance to experience new things and exposed us to new people that we otherwise would not have met.”

The Graduate Support staff partnered with them on high school placement, financial aid, scholarships and internship opportunities. The Goso family’s appreciation extends beyond the experiences of the two boys. The Graduate Support department also lent a hand to their three sisters with high school and college advice. After graduating from Nativity in 1997, Gadisa attended the Groton School and then went on to Stonehill College where he majored in International Relations. After graduating from Stonehill in 2005 he returned to Nativity Prep as a volunteer teacher. He chose to return because he truly felt it was the right thing to do. He taught computer literacy and writing lab for the first two years. After that, he transitioned to directing the after-school program, high school placement program and the admissions department. This past summer he became the Director of Graduate Support where he provides comprehensive support to other alums in high school, college and beyond. Upon graduating from Nativity in 2002, Hambisa went on to study at the Noble and Greenough School and then attended Trinity College in Hartford, CT where he majored in Economics. While a student at Nobles he traveled to Romania where he volunteered at an orphanage, and while at Trinity he spent a semester abroad in France. HAMBISA GOSO ..................................................................... After graduating from college in the spring of 2010, Hambisa felt called to return to Nativity and give back to the school that had given so much to him. ..................................................................... His love of working with children, coupled with a mathematically oriented background suit him well in his role as the 7th and 8th grade volunteer math teacher. In addition to being an educator, Hambisa also serves as the coach for lacrosse and is chairing the parent committee. According to both brothers Nativity offered them the “full package.” The school recognized both their gifts and their needs. The boys received a top-notch education, a good moral compass, and access to opportunities that otherwise would have been beyond their reach. In return, today's Nativity Prep students and alumni are the fortunate recipients of Gadisa and Hambisa Goso's dedicated teaching, guidance, love and support. ANNUAL REPORT 2010 3
