One of my favorite photos in this year’s annual report is the image of the Goso brothers found on page 

two. Gadisa and Hambisa Goso can light up a room with their smiles. They are rays of warm sunshine 

on a cold winter’s day. Both brothers are graduates of Nativity Prep, and both have returned to their 

alma mater to give back to the school community that gave so much to them. Their brotherly affection 

and heartwarming service make them ideal models of the people all our students are called to become 

- loving brothers who are men for others. 

The pages of this annual report are filled with the names and photos of people much like the Goso brothers 

– men and women who light up the world as our students navigate their way through adolescence in the 

tough and treacherous inner-city neighborhoods of Boston. Nativity Prep is like a second family for our 

students. Benefactors, trustees, volunteers, tutors, teachers, and friends are all members of the extended 

family that has served our students and sustained our mission for over twenty years. 

It is no secret that strong family support makes it possible for people to survive through tough times. At 

Nativity Prep we are deeply grateful for all the members of our extended family who helped to make our 

20th anniversary year such a huge success. Your generous support has sustained us through the most 

challenging economic conditions our school has ever faced. Your continued support, as we forge ahead 

into our next twenty years, will make our family stronger and more resilient than ever.

ANNUAL REPORT 2010 1

Originally from Ethiopia, the Goso family sought refuge in Sudan to 

escape the civil war, famine and disease that plagued their 

homeland. Gadisa was born in Sudan during this time, and the 

family obtained United States visas in a government sponsored 

lottery program. The courageous Gosos moved to Minnesota where 

a sponsoring church helped them to learn English, find an 

apartment and prepare resumes to look for jobs. The family moved 

from Minnesota to Boston later that year; Hambisa was born shortly 

after. 

The Goso children attended their local public elementary school in 

Boston, which did not provide enough of an academic challenge for 

them. The family felt that the expectations and standards for the 

students were low, and the Goso boys were more advanced than 

most of their peers. Gadisa's principal noticed his strong work ethic 

and suggested to the parents that they look into sending him to 

nearby Nativity Prep.

Nativity Prep is blessed to have not one, but two of its graduates on the faculty 

this year. Gadisa and Hambisa Goso, brothers and graduates of Nativity Prep have 

dedicated themselves to the school that made a meaningful and long lasting 

impact on their lives.

The Goso parents were so impressed with 

the Nativity program after Gadisa enrolled, 

that they decided it was definitely the place 

they wanted Hambisa to attend as well.

Although it was an adjustment to go to a new school, both boys rose 

to the occasion. Gadisa and Hambisa credit Nativity Prep as the 

place where they embraced many of the morals and values that 

guide their lives today. They both recall with enthusiasm the many 

activities they participated in as students at Nativity Prep. 

Kayaking, sailing, visiting the Cape and spending one month away 

at overnight summer camp were some of the highlights of their 

youth. According to Gadisa, “Growing up in the inner-city of Boston 

we lived in a haphazard bubble. Nativity Prep provided us with a 

chance to experience new things and exposed us to new people 

that we otherwise would not have met.”

While in high school and college Gadisa and Hambisa both took full 

advantage of Nativity’s robust Graduate Support department. The 

Graduate Support staff partnered with them on high school 

placement, financial aid, scholarships and internship opportunities. 

The Goso family’s appreciation extends beyond the experiences of 

the two boys. The Graduate Support department also lent a hand to 

their three sisters with high school and college advice. 

After graduating from Nativity in 1997, Gadisa attended the Groton 

School and then went on to Stonehill College where he majored in 

International Relations. After graduating from Stonehill in 2005 he 

returned to Nativity Prep as a volunteer teacher. He chose to return 

because he truly felt it was the right thing to do. He taught 

computer literacy and writing lab for the first two years. After that, 

he transitioned to directing the after-school program, high school 

placement program and the admissions department. This past 

summer he became the Director of Graduate Support where he 

provides comprehensive support to other alums in high school, 

college and beyond. 

Upon graduating from Nativity in 2002, Hambisa went on to study 

at the Noble and Greenough School and then attended Trinity 

College in Hartford, CT where he majored in Economics. While a 

student at Nobles he traveled to Romania where he volunteered at 

an orphanage, and while at Trinity he spent a semester abroad in 

France. 

HAMBISA GOSO

After graduating from college in the 

spring of 2010, Hambisa felt called to return 

to Nativity and give back to the school that 

had given so much to him.

His love of working with children, coupled with a mathematically 

oriented background suit him well in his role as the 7th and 8th 

grade volunteer math teacher. In addition to being an educator, 

Hambisa also serves as the coach for lacrosse and is chairing the 

parent committee. 

According to both brothers Nativity offered them the “full package.” 

The school recognized both their gifts and their needs. The boys 

received a top-notch education, a good moral compass, and access 

to opportunities that otherwise would have been beyond their 

reach. In return, today's Nativity Prep students and alumni are the 

fortunate recipients of Gadisa and Hambisa Goso's dedicated 

teaching, guidance, love and support. 


Encouraged by Barry, Jack and his good friend Jim Moynihan 

decided to donate the proceeds of their annual Christmas luncheon 

to the new, tuition-free, Jesuit middle school in Roxbury that was 

serving low-income boys from Boston. Jack’s affinity and admiration 

for the mission of Nativity Prep remained strong. His quiet acts of 

kindness to Nativity developed into a lasting family legacy. 

Born and raised in Belmont with his nine siblings, Jack Mahoney 

graduated from Northeastern University and went on to pursue a 

career in the computer industry, working for companies such as 

IBM and Honeywell. Together with his wife Marcia, they raised five 

children. After moving several times, the Mahoney Family 

eventually returned to the Boston area and settled in Dover. 

Lovingly referred to as “O” by his children and grandchildren, Jack 

can be described in many ways: a hard worker, a man’s man, a 

person with a great sense of humor, a golfer, a carpenter, a 

dedicated Catholic. But most of all, he is described as a loving and 

devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. 

Shortly after celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary, Jack 

Mahoney passed away unexpectedly in February 2007. Because of 

Jack’s belief in its mission, Nativity Prep was the beneficiary of 

numerous gifts from family and friends upon his passing. 

In the months following his father’s death, John (Jay) Mahoney 

decided to create a more permanent legacy for his father and

Like many of Nativity’s supporters, Jack Mahoney was introduced to Nativity Prep 

twenty years ago by Barry Hynes, the school’s founder. 

established an endowed fund at Nativity. In a letter written to the 

school in October 2007, John wrote, “My family and I are very 

excited about supporting your efforts and doing it in a way that 

honors my dad’s memory and his own strong interest in Nativity 

Prep.” In June 2010, John significantly enhanced the fund with the 

addition of a very generous $200,000 gift. Beginning this year, 

Nativity will draw monies from the fund to support short-term 

operating needs, and the principal will be reinvested for growth. 

John’s four siblings – Mark, Ann, Mel and Sally – also contribute to 

Nativity in their own meaningful ways through personal donations 

and hometown drives to raise money for new books and other school 

supplies. Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews continue to 

support Nativity and honor Jack’s legacy through annual 

contributions to the Mahoney Fund. Upon moving back to the greater 

Boston area from Chicago three years ago, Mel reached out to 

Nativity and offered her services as a volunteer. She first volunteered 

in the library. Today she serves as the school’s social studies 

coordinator and SSAT Prep teacher. Along with her husband Brad 

and their 3 sons, Mel is an integral part of the daily life of Nativity. 

Although Jack Mahoney is no longer with us today, his legacy lives 

on. The John H. Mahoney Memorial Fund not only provides a 

lasting tribute to Jack Mahoney, but also assists Nativity with its 

need to build a stronger and healthier financial future.

Jason Perry, Class of 96: Will be going to Hangzhou, China later this year to speak at the American Lifestyles Expo, where he will 

be addressing over 50,000 technology venture capitalists about music distribution, entertainment and Amalgam Digital, the East 

Boston record label he has worked at for the past year. The goal of the Expo is to provide visibility for American companies to Chinese 

investors and to promote international business.

Welbis Ortiz, Class of 07: Spent the Spring 2010 semester abroad at The Island School, in Eleuthera, Bahamas. While at The 

Island School he worked on many environmental research projects dealing with the importance of lemon sharks on the island and 

composting soil effectively. During the three-month semester he also achieved one of his personal goals, which was to learn how to 

swim. In fact, in the end, he was able to complete a four-mile open water swim.

Carlos Romer, Class of 07: Spent one month this past summer in Argentina where he toured the country, learned its customs 

and traditions and performed community service for the homeless.

Jovanni Soto, Class of 07: A student at the Boston Arts Academy, Jovanni is currently studying several dance styles including 

hip-hop, modern and jazz, as well as traditional and contemporary ballet. His normal school day consists of academic classes in the 

morning and dance classes every afternoon. Outside of school, he also performs with the dance group, Origination Inc. In October he 

was part of three performances put on for the general public in Wellesley by Origination Inc.

on your generosity and we are grateful for your commitment to our students, 

graduates and families. Your support allows us to inspire boys from Boston to 

become men for others in an academically rigorous and highly structured 

environment. Thank you! 

financial highlights 

REVENUE 

Nativity Prep reported $1.50 million in operating revenue in 

2009-2010. 37% of this income was received through annual fund 

contributions; 33% came from special events; 20% was received 

through gifts to the student sponsorship program; 9% as a result of 

grant writing; and 1% from other sources including activity fees 

collected from families. In addition, $335,757 was given to 

restricted endowment funds. 

EXPENSES 

Nativity Prep spent $1.43 million on 2009-2010 operations, making 

the following possible for our students, graduates and their families: 

❖ Approximately 875 more hours per year in class or in a schoolrelated 

activity compared to their peers in the Boston Public School 

System, including: 

– A school day that begins at 7:30 am and ends at 8:30 pm 

– Breakfast, lunch and dinner 

– Afternoon sports and activities 

– Evening Study and Tutoring Program 

– Summer Academic and Leadership Program 

❖ Afternoon activities including: soccer, lacrosse, basketball, baseball, 

chess, swimming, knitting, ice skating, audio/visual arts, drama, 

school newspaper 

❖ Counseling services for students and families 

❖ Community service activities and projects 

❖ Graduate Support services for our high school and college-aged 

alumni providing a smooth and successful transition to high school 

and college: 

– Preparation for the SSAT and SAT 

– Funding for tuition gaps, text books and other supplies 

– Tutoring, internships, work experiences and mentoring for 

academic, personal and professional growth

Lorraine Smith has been involved with Nativity Prep since the very 

beginning of the school's history. First as a Nativity parent, and then as 

a volunteer, for the past 20 years she has served the school in a variety 

of ways including chef, driver, mentor and member of the Board of 

Trustees. Currently, “Mama Smith” as she is lovingly called by the boys, 

prepares a nutritious and delicious dinner for all of the students every 

Monday night. If you pass her in the kitchen you might overhear her 

discussing the reasons she enjoys being part of the Nativity community;

through the present day. Rooted in her strong commitment to 

helping enhance the literacy of our community, Tink has been 

dedicated to maintaining and continually improving the school 

library. Over the last 14 years, Tink has also served Nativity in other 

capacities, including: cooking dinner, tutoring in the evening study 

program, assisting with secondary school placement, and teaching

and Boston College’s School of Theology. Ed is a partner in the Boston 

intellectual property law firm, Sunstein Kann; but with a push from St. 

Ignatius pastor and Nativity Board member, Bob VerEecke, he enrolled 

in the School of Theology five years ago, fulfilling a goal he’s had since 

undergraduate days at Dartmouth to pursue theology studies. Then, with 

encouragement from Bill Campbell and John Wronski, the lawyer added

In addition to the dedicated adult tutors, for the past several years 

Nativity has been blessed to have the PULSE tutors from Boston 

College joining us for Evening Study. The PULSE program is an 

interdisciplinary philosophy and theology course that includes a 

service component, which is completed at Nativity Prep. Students 

in the PULSE program dedicate 10-12 hours per week helping with 

student supervision, preparing and serving dinner to the students, 

and assisting with homework and one-on-one tutoring.

social justice program offered by St. Ignatius Parish. After first 

volunteering at Nativity as a cook in the dinner program, her role has 

since expanded over the course of the last three years. Debbie now 

assists with teacher consultation and curriculum development, and 

supports students both in and out of the classroom.

Nativity Preparatory School is an accredited, tuition-free, 

Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from lowincome 

families residing in Boston. Staffed by experienced 

teachers and dedicated volunteers who work closely with 

families, the school prepares students for success in high 

school and college. Nativity’s academically challenging and 

highly structured environment helps students grow in a love 

for learning and an abiding sense of responsibility to their 

community. In the Jesuit tradition, the school promotes the
