196 THE FELL AND ROCK CLIMBING CLUB JOURNALThe reason for his eminence as a Lakeland figure lay first inhis single-mindedness and reverence. To the District thathe loved, he brought, moreover, a scholarship both careful inmethod and far-reaching in grasp. He cared immensely forhistorical truth and did much to establish a sound tradition ofantiquarian and historical research, especially as he was for manyyears President of the Cumberland and Westmorland AntiquarianSociety and Editor of its Transactions. The time I saw himmost put out, more than some would think reasonable, was oncewhen the Carlisle Pageant authorities had sacrificed historicalaccuracy to dramatic effect.If there is a place where such men after death meet with thosewhom they have served, W. G. Collingwood has assuredly beenwelcomed by many good men of the past, some of them not atall like himself, whose names or doings he has saved fromundeserved oblivion. It is pleasant to think of him, short ofstature, dome-like in forehead, with the friendly yet penetratingblue eyes of the scholar, passing his time with local worthiesof whom he told the bare truth—or with the South Germanminers of Dutch Agnes, who brought prosperity in the Sixteenthand Seventeenth centuries—or with those magnificent Northmenof Thorstein who sailed up the creeks a thousand years ago toclear the lovable green fields in the bottoms of our valleys andto leave their thwaites and howes and saeters in many a welllovedname.Collingwood joined the Club in 1913.
197IN MEMORIAMMARY E. THOMASMary Thomas joined the Club late in life (in 1928), but hadalways been keenly interested in it, and in the pursuits for whichit stands. She was generally to be seen at the Grasmere andthe Windermere meets, and for many years had a Whitsuntideparty at Kilnhow, Rosthwaite. To be one of the twenty or moremembers of that party was a privilege greatly appreciated by all.Living near to Manchester, with her brother Eustace, shewas always in close contact with the Rucksack Club, and wasalmost worshipped by many of its members. Indeed, if that Clubhad admitted ladies to membership she would have been madean honorary member long ago for her invaluable services.A brilliant pianist, holding the degrees of L.R.A.M. andA.R.C.M., she delighted to play at its concerts. She threw herhouse open to its members at all times, and on one ever-memorableevening when we acted a home-made play she served coffeeand cake to 63 members and friends. And above all she actedas hostess to any " celebrities " who came to Manchester to seeeither " Pinnacle " or " Rucksack." She was, indeed, theperfect hostess, she delighted in entertaining, and in her week-endvisitors' book are to be seen the names of Martin Conway,Raymond Bicknell, Capt. Farrar, Frank Smythe, H. W. Nevinson,Walter Amstutz, Howard Somervell, Haskett-Smith, andmany more. She had more of that indefinable quality which wecall charm than anyone I have ever known, and it will ever be oneof my greatest pleasures to feel that I have enjoyed her friendship.H.E.S.COLIN BENT PHILLIPThe Club has lost a distinguished member by the death ofColin B. Phillip last year. He joined the Club in 1909, two yearsafter it was founded, and two years later consented to become aVice-President. Since that date he lived at intervals at Coniston,Elterwater and other places in the District, and was able to attenda number of Club Meets and several Annual Dinners at which hispresence was always much appreciated.
