EDITOR'S NOTES 213lines, it has a magazine format (and therefore makes a strikingcontrast to the sober and dignified get up to which we areaccustomed), and its aim is to take a general view of mountaineeringactivity and not merely some given Club view, to bein touch with everything that goes on in the mountaineeringworld and to produce articles of real technical authority. Onthe whole, one rather likes the gayer bookstall format—for achange; though the type used is irritating and one could wishthat the editor had stuck to one of the customary types withserifs. It is curiously difficult to accustom oneself to readingcontinuously from any of the types without serifs. The conceptionof the Journal is admirable—there is real need forsuch a paper.One does feel, however, that much more care ought to havebeen taken with the Reviews which, in a Journal of this kind,should occupy a very important place. For instance, surelysomebody with proper knowledge of the history of AlpineClimbing ought to have been put on to review such an importantcontribution to Alpine literature as Christian Klucker's book.The reviewer makes no attempt to discuss the book seriously andhis description of Klucker as a guide who " appears to have beenwell above the average " is merely laughable.It is unfortunate, too, that the reviewers adopt quite so excathedra a tone; this is particularly the case in technicalcriticisms of production. The Wayfarers', for instance, aregiven a detailed lecture on how to produce their Journal whichone feels is out of place here though it might be admirablysuited for a bunch of typography students from an expert in thesubject. Certainly it doesn't come well from the pen of a contributorto the B.M.J., which has a number of aesthetic faults ofits own. It is, for instance, a bad mistake to print photographswith no margins; or to back advertisements on to a page ofletterpress. These Journals are well worth binding and howannoying to have to bind a lot of out-of-date advertisementswith the valuable matter of the Journal.One feels at liberty to make these strictures since our ownJournal came out most unexpectedly well, but for an exhortationto use 150 screen blocks and to print but four blocks at a time.In regard to the second admonishment, anyone who knowsanything about half-tone block printing is aware that the ideal
214 THE FELL AND ROCK CLIMBING CLUB JOURNALway is to print one block at a time and so ensure an individualinking which suits that particular picture. If the Hon. Treasurerwill permit me, I am more than willing to meet the B.M.J.criticism here and indeed to go one better. In regard to thesecond admonishment, it is unfortunate that the reviewer didn'texamine our plates more carefully ; actually we have been using150 screen blocks for the last five years or more. The two numbersof the B.M.J. are reviewed elsewhere.Correspondence.A good deal of trouble would be saved to the Club officers ifcorrespondents would write to the " Competent Authority " onany subject they wish to bring up and not haphazard to the firstofficer whose address happens to catch their fancy !The Hon. Secretary deals with all matters relating to theRules, Year Book, Meets, Annual Meeting, Membership andmatters of general interest.The Hon. Treasurer deals with matters of general finance.The Hen. Librarian deals with all matters connected with theborrowing and presentation of books and lantern slides andkindred Club Journals.The Hon. Editor deals with all matters concerning the productionof the Journal, literary, technical and financial, advertisementsexcepted.The Assistant Editor deals with the sale of Journals, bothcurrent and old, and with the advertisements in the Journal,and with the distribution of the current Journal to members andkindred Clubs.
