18 THE ART OF TEACHING GRADES ONE–EIGHTFOUNDATION STUDIES19Grades Seven and Eight participants are REQUIRED to bring recorders and coloredpencils. <strong>Art</strong> supplies and musical instruments can be purchased at the Bookstore at <strong>Rudolf</strong><strong>Steiner</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<strong>The</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>of</strong> Teaching Grade SevenJuly 15–21 with Ryan Anderson, Valerie Baadh Garrett, Antje Bojarsky,Mikko Bojarsky, Eva Cranstoun, Helen Lubin, and <strong>The</strong>odore Mahle<strong>The</strong> seventh grade challenges the teacher with a demanding and stimulating curriculum. One<strong>of</strong> the critical components is the understanding <strong>of</strong> the emergence <strong>of</strong> modern consciousness andscientific thought at the time <strong>of</strong> the Renaissance. For students, it’s a time <strong>of</strong> adventure. <strong>The</strong>y learnabout voyages to unknown lands, discover the substances <strong>of</strong> our earth, and observe the heavens.Plus, there is the challenge <strong>of</strong> trying to draw something that really looks like what they see. <strong>The</strong>teacher has a wonderful opportunity to fill in the gaps <strong>of</strong> his or her own education and share thejoy <strong>of</strong> discovery with the students. Topics include: adolescence, physics, chemistry, math, Englishskills, nutrition and physiology, music, painting, the Renaissance, the Reformation, the age <strong>of</strong>discovery, games and movement, speech, and eurythmy. Studies in science and mathematics arefundamental to developing objectivity and rigor in thinking during this stage. In meteorology,the student experiences how weather phenomena can change quickly from calm to stormyjust as quickly as an adolescent can shift moods. <strong>The</strong> study <strong>of</strong> drama and other arts providesopportunities for the young person to express his/her awakening feelings.
