14 THE ART OF TEACHING GRADES ONE–EIGHTTHE ART OF TEACHING GRADES ONE–EIGHT15<strong>The</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>of</strong> Teaching Grades One–EightWe plan to serve our participants through both the “art” and “craft” <strong>of</strong> teaching. Emphasis on therole <strong>of</strong> the teacher as an artist in the classroom, hands-on work, and experiential learning inspireand initiate the mood <strong>of</strong> each grade. Each week starts with an overview <strong>of</strong> the grade, highlightingblocks and skills to be developed, and includes strategies for planning, assessment, and recordkeeping. Participants build a picture based on a foundation <strong>of</strong> knowledge that includes theanthroposophical view <strong>of</strong> child development and curricular content specific to <strong>Waldorf</strong> schools,and apply these through the arts. It is our hope that participants will find substance and spirit inour courses and feel equipped and empowered to continue their educational journey.NEW! While gradually moving from the magical consciousness <strong>of</strong>early childhood into the practical world, the second-grade child learns about the wisdom andfoibles <strong>of</strong> the animal kingdom and, in contrast, the legends <strong>of</strong> heroes and saints that depict highhuman ideals. At the same time, math and language skills are strengthened, along with physicaldexterity, through movement and crafts that also help foster cognitive development.This course is designed for those who have an understanding <strong>of</strong> the principles <strong>of</strong> <strong>Waldorf</strong>education.
