Ibo’s Forts.
Fortaleza São Joao Baptista. Smaller than its counterpart on Ilha de Moçambique, it
nevertheless used to house the entire population of Ibo town during the raids by the Dutch,
French and various pirates, and during the dark days of the Frelimo struggle against
colonialism up to 700 prisoners were kept there at a time.
Forte S. Antonio. A smaller fort guarding the East side of Ibo village. Closed to the public
due to structural instability.
Fortim S. José. A small blockhouse overlooking the docks.
Ilha Fion. (Fion Island).
Just East of Tandanangue, you pass it (LHS) on the way to Ibo. There are plans to develop
it.
Ilhéu Manuel da Silva. (Manuel da Silva’s Island).

Ilha do Matemo (Matemo Island)
The magnificent beach now has a top-end lodge overlooking it and some of the dunes have
been levelled for the airstrip. Matemo is probably the largest of all the Quirimbas and has a
substantial permanent population.

Location. North of Ibo Island.
Accommodation. 24 thatched air conditioned chalets with en-suite bathrooms fitted with
indoor shower and separate bath as well as a private outdoor shower. Outdoor hammock,

Ilha das Rolas. (Rolas Island).
Good snorkelling with excellent corals and reef fish on the south and eastern side of the reef.
Good diving and snorkelling on Baixo Zala a few kilometres to the north. Plenty of pigeons,
hence the name, also one of the only places in the area host to the rare coconut or robber
crab, the world’s largest terrestrial (it cannot swim) arthropod.
Ilha Mogundula (Mogundula Island).
Mogundula Island lies within the Quirimbas National Park and the Lodge is due to open 2007:
