Air CheckDear Members,Normally in this space, I write to you about the highlights of the award-winning programmingand services you have helped make possible through your vitally important membership support ofthis unique institution. But that is business as usual, which doesn’t applyin this environment. This month, I hope you’ll understand my decision to instead speak to youdirectly about the financial challenges we face that are severely hindering ourability to maintain the programs you have come to expect from us. I knowthis economy has shaken us all. Families, businesses, cultural institutions –all of us – have been making painful choices about our priorities. In thisenvironment, I want to express my heartfelt thanks for your continuedmembership support of WTTW and WFMT.At a time when your mailbox is overflowing with ever more requests for support of worthy causes –the fact that you have stayed with us is deeply appreciated. We seek to be your connection to thecultural and intellectual life of our region and world. As our cherished daily newspapers are struggling,we seek to help you understand the events and trends that affect the life of our community andnation and are committed to doing our part in filling the ever growing need to provide journalismnecessary for a functioning democracy. We seek to be a safe harbor in a dangerous world for childrenand families. We are committed to doing this without a particular point of view other than objectivityand balance. With the storm clouds forming over the past two years we have made deep expense cuts from ouroperations with the guiding principle to preserve and protect mission critical programs and services. Ihope you haven’t noticed. This year, however, the decline in revenues has accelerated as corporations, foundations, and families have been hit hard by the economy. And, with the paralysis in Springfield, our State of Illinois support has dropped from $1.4 million last year to $150,000 this year.Needless to say, your continued support is more important than ever and will keep WTTW andWFMT your window to the world for many years to come!Thank you!Inside the Guide3 Member Connections4 Member Perks5 TV Listings6 WTTW Digital Channel Highlights9 How-to SaturdaysSincerely,Dan SchmidtPresident & CEO14 Primetime Grid17 Kid Grid18 At-a-Glance19 Radio Listings31 SponsorsOn the cover: Ellie Kendrick as Anne Frank. Hisinner traditionalism, coupled withthe neo-classicism he had helpedinvent, now made it possible forhim to play a leading role in Sovietculture, to whose demands for politicalengagement, utility and simplicity heresponded with prodigious creativeenergy. In his last years, however, official encouragement turned intopersecution.” We’ll sample Prokofiev’ssymphonic, concerto, chamber, stage, and film works throughout April.Throughout the month2010 APRIL 19
