Why use <strong>an</strong> <strong>approved</strong><strong>fuel</strong> <strong>container</strong>?If you need <strong>fuel</strong> for your lawn mower, boat or simply w<strong>an</strong>t tostore a small supply in your car in case of emergencies, ensureyou use a <strong>container</strong> that is <strong>approved</strong> to hold <strong>fuel</strong>. Containersthat have previously held other subst<strong>an</strong>ces (see opposite page)are not suitable because:••Residue from other subst<strong>an</strong>ces may react with <strong>fuel</strong>.They are not designed to hold <strong>fuel</strong> <strong>an</strong>d, as a result, <strong>fuel</strong>may damage the <strong>container</strong> <strong>an</strong>d cause the <strong>fuel</strong> to leak.What is <strong>an</strong> <strong>approved</strong><strong>fuel</strong> <strong>container</strong>?Fuel c<strong>an</strong> only be stored <strong>an</strong>d tr<strong>an</strong>sported in<strong>approved</strong> <strong>container</strong>s. For <strong>container</strong>s up to25 litres, they must comply with AS/NZS2906:2001, ASTM F-852-99el or be a previously<strong>approved</strong> <strong>container</strong> (i.e with <strong>an</strong> LAB registrationnumber marked on the <strong>container</strong>).These <strong>container</strong>s must:• Have <strong>an</strong> appropriate sealing cap• Be made of metal or a durable plasticthat will not react with the <strong>fuel</strong>• Be clearly labelled or marked to identify the <strong>fuel</strong> <strong>an</strong>dthe potential hazards e.g. petrol – highly flammable.Containers greater th<strong>an</strong> 25 litrescapacity must also be compli<strong>an</strong>t.These include steel <strong>container</strong>s such asjerry c<strong>an</strong>s or drums with appropriatesealing caps. They should be markedwith the UN packaging symbol,as shown above <strong>an</strong>d must also beclearly labelled or marked to identifythe <strong>fuel</strong> <strong>an</strong>d the potential hazards.Don’t risk using a non<strong>approved</strong><strong>container</strong>.FLAMMABLE LIQUID3unHow much <strong>fuel</strong> c<strong>an</strong> I tr<strong>an</strong>sport<strong>an</strong>d store?If you are tr<strong>an</strong>sporting <strong>fuel</strong> for domestic or recreational use, foruse as tools-of-trade, agricultural or commercial use, there isa maximum limit of 250 litres* before you must comply withadditional requirements of the D<strong>an</strong>gerous Goods Rule. Thisincludes documentation, placards on your vehicle <strong>an</strong>d having a“D” endorsement on your driver licence.If you are storing greater th<strong>an</strong> 50 litres of petrol, you need aLocation Test Certificate. If you are h<strong>an</strong>dling greater th<strong>an</strong> 100litres of petrol, you are required to be <strong>an</strong> Approved H<strong>an</strong>dler or<strong>an</strong> Approved H<strong>an</strong>dler is required to be available.* L<strong>an</strong>d Tr<strong>an</strong>sport Rule: D<strong>an</strong>gerous Goods 2005Which <strong>container</strong>s areunsuitable for storing <strong>fuel</strong>?Examples of <strong>container</strong>s that should NEVER be used for storing/tr<strong>an</strong>sporting <strong>fuel</strong> include:• Plastic soft drink bottles.• Glass bottles or jars.• Containers previously used to store other types ofhazardous subst<strong>an</strong>ces (oil, laundry detergent, dishwashingpowder, fertiliser, poison, weed killer, drench, etc).IF IN DOUBT,DON’T USE IT!✘
