Street scenes were a favourite subject, whether in the south of France or asleepy village in Fife, and here the warm stone, colourful doors and packed earth of the streetmake for a richly-coloured painting.

27. SJ Peploe RSA (1871-1935)Trees at Douglas Hall 1915signed lower right and inscribed with title versooil on panel 40.5 x 32 cmsDouglas Hall is a hamlet sitting above Sandyhills Bay to where Peploe came in 1915 on a trip toDumfriesshire. He made several visits to the South West of Scotland, partly at the urging of hisfriends from Paris days, EA Taylor and Jessie M King who had by then settled in Kirkcudbright.Peploe had been rejected for War Service and thought that time in the countryside would begood for his health. He worked in Kirkcudbright itself, painting the Tolbooth and harbour and at a farm at Lagganbut surely did not make a more dramatic, brilliant picture than this. Trees were a lifelongfavourite subject and the great pines at Cassis, Antibes and Rothiemurchus inspired some ofhis greatest works towards the end of his life. Here he paints in a colour key as brilliant as anyFauve artist but the trees have the majesty and presence of a Cézanne; here is expressionismand structure combined to make a work unique in British painting.
