The 10th of July, 1641,3rd and 29th of October, 1642Bartolomeo Basetti's Letter to theCardinals of the Propaganda Fide."In Baia I found out that the ruler wants to take one of ourchurches in Suceava. He already took it (Many catholics, wholeft the catholic church, they returned in secret.)Priest Paulo Bellino (Beke) arrived here, in Iasi. He isHungarian, age 42, craftsman and a good theologian. It seems to be a good idea (and the most beneficialthing for the inhabitants here) to make himmissionary and give him our care, because he can domore than all the missionaries together, knowing theHungarian language. In this region most of thepeople are Hungarian catholic, etc.We have two Hungarian young people, who want to becomepriests and to give communion to the catholics. The diocese Synod from Cotnari since November 1642 hasbeen asking to give them support for the teachers salaries, to setup a school here. Many villages cannot afford to pay a priest, the churches areadministrated by laics, and because there are children, whoarrive at the age of three, and are not baptized, even if themidwives can baptize them in emergency, they ask to permit thelaics to perform these duties, and not only in emergency, andnot let people live like animals."Original version in Italian: D. Bacau, the 8th of May 1643Report of the Franciscan MissionarySimon Apolloni to Francesco Ingoli,Secretary at the FIDE Propaganda. In my letter from the 20th of July, 1642, some negligenceswere brought to my attention concerning the priest from Bacau, and a promise that he will find out by census the number ofpeople in his care. Through the census I've learnt that 635 soulsreceived communion and one third of them already madeconfession this year. But now, by the Grace of God and becauseof the serious admonition of the Father Vicar and my diocese, for Easter nearly every believer confessed and just few of themhad to be urged more seriously to follow the church's order. In one of my announcements, given by that time, a mancalled Apolloni, writing about the situation in Moldavia, saidthat the Moldavian missionaries have to speak three languages:Hungarian, Saxon and Rumanian."Original version in Latin, MCSMO, I. page 146.52. 12th of April 1643Report of the Minorite Observant MonkBartolomeo Basetti about His Visit to theMoldavian Catholic Churches"Bacau: The church from the bishopric residence of Bacauwhich is in the honor of Virgin Mary's Asleep, of 24 feet longand of 9 feet wide, was built by a Hungarian catholic Princess. In Bacau, catholic houses are 112; 645 souls, 380 in thecare of the Hungarian priest Balthasar.Schismatic houses are 130, souls 500.
