Those priests who could function immediately, insteadof standing idle for weeks, or by chance for months. There is the necessity of renovation of the residence, in thelocality of Jasi. The wooden roof should be repaired, while theroofs of the other houses are of straw.Text in: A : APF CF. vol.31 Fol. 466-469Printing of L. Alba Iulia, the 2nd of March, 1702Letter of the Catholic Nobility from Transylvaniato Angelo Tamburini, General of Iesuits"Knowing very well that the first reason ofestablishing the Jesus' Society is to promote all around theworld the praise of God and the redemption of souls', we standin front of Your Eminence to ask for spiritual help for ourpeople from the extreme part of Europe. Some centuries ago, when the glorious princes of Hungary reigned, thousands ofHungarians were sent to the Fortress of Bassarabia, called LittleTartaria today, Buceag by its popular name, the reason ofsettling there. But later, times have changed, - as it happens -the Hungarian power was weakened by the attacks of theTurkish Emperor and the Tatar Khan; the population was forced
to subjugation, but even so it kept the fortresses and localitiesfrom the Black Sea, as well as their catholic religion. Though, several times they asked - by letters or by delegates - for priests,to come and share the bread of divine word with the starvingpeople, we couldn't satisfy their wish, because of the flames ofwar between the two emperors. But now, when due to God'smercy the torch of war has burned out and the wished peacecame over the people, a new road opened between us, freer andsafer. So, we persist in our request to the Most ReverendFather, to bring us the divine cult, by writing a letter to theProvincial Reverend of Austria, to send immediately worthy andpious men to feed the starving souls. For this favor of YourMost Reverend Father we remain Your most devoted servants.Alba Iulia from Transylvania, 12th of March, 1702. TheCatholic Status of Transylvania."* Original version in Latin, in Eotvos Lorand Faculty Library fromBudapest, Kaprinary Collection, Fol.42, page 75-76 New edition in:MCSMO, II, page 763*Note: we don't know, if an answer has been given and if the AustrianJesuit provincial received any proposition. Indeed, in Moldavia the warstopped, starting the time for the return of the refugees and the restoring theruined catholic parishes. On the other hand, in 1703 in Hungary the uprisingof Rakoczi flared up and we know, that the Jesuits were the adherents of theEmperor, were expelled from the country. It might be hard to imagine thatthe Jesuit Order from Vienna would send Hungarian Jesuits to Moldavia.APPENDIX IIFORMER ROMAN-CATHOLIC BISHOPRICSIN THE MENTIONED PERIOD1.
