Green ITIn August 2009, we issued a tender notice for the purchase of IT equipmentwhich had to comply with international safety and environmental standards. Thesestandards ban the use of heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium and mercuryin computer and accessories components. This was achieved by including thefollowing clause in the tender notice:“the equipment must be accompanied with a Compliance Certificate, issuedby an agency accredited by INMETRO or a similar international document, proving that the computer and the monitor comply with the IEC 60950(Safety of Information Technology Equipment including Electrical BusinessEquipment) standard, to ensure user safety against electrical accidents andcombustion of electric materials, and a RoHS (European Union Restrictionof Hazardous Substances) certificate, so that materials and waste of suchequipment do not damage the environment.”Asbestos SuppressionIn compliance with State Law 12684/07, we extended the banning of asbestos inall materials/equipment used in our constructions, by including such restriction inpurchase contracts. We had already banned asbestos in 2005 in the specificationsof the direct purchase of items that in the past were made with this fiber, such asroof tiles, water tanks, gaskets, etc.New contract clausesIn December, the Tender Notices Committee approved adjustments to the masterclause applicable to all construction and service agreements banning asbestosfrom materials purchased by building contractors and used in construction sites. It also introduces the mandatory compliance with the National EnvironmentCouncil (Conama) on the appropriate disposal of rubble, by giving preference torecycling, the removal for reprocessing of used lubricant oil, and the compliancewith the labor specialization requirements and registration of cooling equipmentmaintenance services. This measure was intended to avoid emissions of gasesthat deplete the ozone layer.EN25 Protection of BiodiversityThe river bank forest recovery actions are part of a wider range of initiativesthat favor biodiversity. We have been supporting the studies of the USP ZoologyInstitute (focuses on birds and bats) and the Biology Institute of the Universityof Mogi das Cruzes (focused on fish and ants) in the Morro Grande and Rio Claroreserves, respectively, and maintain the ldges of both professors and students. In 2009, we conducted studies on the fish (fries) repopulation of the Claro river, which are already reproducing in a natural environment. In particular, we arereintroducing the tabarana fish (Salminus hilarii), virtually extinct in this riverbasin. Another fish repopulation action was conducted in October 2009, in thePardo river, in Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo, in association with Duke Energy. Wereleased 100,000 fries of native species: pacu-guaçu (Piaractus mesopotamicus)and curimbatá (Prochilodus scrofa). We also conducted research on the diversityof algae species in the Guarapiranga dam and macrophytes (floating vegetationthat can prevent navigation and water sports).Poço Preto Sourcing–Rio Claro System.108 Relatório de Sustentabilidade 2009 109
