Environmental Education at the Vista Verde spring, São José dos Campos. In 2009, the company Desenvolvimento Rodoviário S/A (Dersa) joined theprogram with a plan to plant 550 hectares along the Cachoeira river, in Piracaia, and so far 268 hectares (447,000 seedlings) have been planted.Sabesp makes the firebreaks and fencing, and provides the seedlings of 60species from its nursery in Jaguari (Vargem), which produces 500,000 units/year, and participates in the activities supporting the publicizing of the initiative. The areas chosen favor the formation of ecologic corridors, linking existing isolatedforests and promoting natural regeneration in degraded areas. The programinvolves an environmental education component, where we discuss the topic withthe neighboring communities and at the region schools, promoting the plantation oflegal, adjacent reserves in neighboring properties. It also has a social side, as mostof the labor used in plantations are rural workers from the region itself.Revitalization of SpringsEN13 SABESP and the City of São José dos Campos entered into in September2009 an agreement under which we join the Spring Revitalization Program, formalizing a partnership effective since 2006, a period during which we recoveredthe preservation areas around 38 springs (32,000 trees planted) in the urban area.We will donate 18 educational water analysis kits during one year (parameters:pH, total coliforms, color and temperature) to be used by students to monitorwater quality at the springs. This program involves 600 students who act asmultipliers of the actions and knowledge acquires in 28 schools, 1 Fundhas (HélioAugusto de Souza Foundation) unit and an NGO (Brasil Sokai Gakai Internacional– BSGI), reaching 5,000 youngsters. We will also make supplementary collectionsand analyses in our labs. This activity is disclosed by the Water EnvironmentFederation and International Water Association (IWA) networks, through theWorld Water Monitoring Day. The project was one of the three front runners of the2008 Rational Water Use Preservation Award of the National Water Agency (ANA).Plantation and Management GuidanceThe objective of the preparation of the guidance “Plantation and Maintenance ofNative Trees” was to ensure the success of the reforestation for environmentaloffsets. As for the guidance “Management of Bird Nesting in Sabesp Facilities”presents preventive recommendations regarding the bird nesting in electricitytransformers that may result in systems downtimes and whose inappropriatemanagement could violate the Environmental Crimes Law. We are also stickingpictures of raptor birds in window panes to avoid small birds hitting them.Sustainable ProcurementSabesp pioneered the introduction of criteria to reduce the environmental impactsthroughout the supply chain, using its influence (R$2.07 billion in purchases in2009 and 2,159 direct suppliers) to encourage the production of environmentallyfriendly products and services.Inventory Optimization ProgramThe Corporate Management Department developed this program to improve themanagement of our materials and equipment inventories. In September 2008, an computer system was implemented to asses, on a dailybasis, the balance of materials in the different storerooms. The items whosebalances have no turnover during more than six months are automaticallytransferred to the available inventory and can be used by other units. Thesematerials are locked out for purchase while the inventory balance is positive. This action resulted in a 44.1 percent decrease in purchases, when comparingDecember 2009 figures with December 2007 figures. Thus, we couple decreasein costs with lower impact on natural resources.106 Relatório de Sustentabilidade 2009 107
