ISO 14001One of our corporate goals is to obtain the ISO 14001 certification. Our objectiveis to certify, by December 2010, 65 operating units that include the water andsewage treatment plants. In 2009, we implemented the Environmental ManagementSystem (SGA) in 26 operating units, with the involvement of the Inland, Coastal andSão Paulo metropolitan area (RMSP) business units. The SGA documentation wasprepared based on the revision, adaptation and creation of new procedures, totalingsix corporate procedures. To date, 920 employees were offered training opportunities(10,328 hours) and we made a concentrated effort to ensure full legal and regulatorycompliance of the plants selected during this stage. ISO 14001 is a tool that willpermit a better control of the possible environmental impacts arising from ouractivities, products and services. It is also an incentive to provide environmentallysustainable sanitation services, and inputs for the change in the environmentalculture, creating cost cutting opportunities through better performance, withambitious environmental goals and targets.Cycle of Environmental Management ConferencesThis is an initiative created in October 2008 to promote the exchange of experiencesand disseminate knowledge and know-how on the most significant environmentalissues that we are currently approaching. The events are part of an environmentalmanagement strategy that seeks a closer relationship with society in favor of theenvironment. We held nine conferences gathering approximately 1,700 participantsfrom SABESP and guest attendants, which covered topics like climate change andcarbon credits, water resource management, reclassification of bodies of water, monitoring and control of aquatic macrophytes, river bank reforestation, paymentfor environmental services, and environmental education.Economic Valuation of PossibleEnvironmental DamagesIn March 2009, we completed the studies commissioned to the Federal Universityof Paraná Foundation (Funpar), whose purpose was to make available to Sabespdifferent economic valuation methodologies of possible environmental damages, focused on assisting the Company in finding solutions for lawsuits. We conducted anintensive 36-hour course, attended 40 people, to train employees in the use of themodel, consisting of presentations, group activities, and hands-on workshops.Environmental Information SystemTo provide inputs to the monitoring of environmental issues, we developed andimplemented in 2009 an environmental information system, on an emergencyand short-term basis, which includes the Environmental Licensing and Water UseConcession Modules, Policy Adjustment Commitments (TACs) andCourt Settlements, Environmental Lawsuits, and EnvironmentalInquiries. We have issued an tender notice for the engagementof services for the development of an Environmental ManagementCorporate Information System (Siga). Siga will replace the current system andinclude the existing Institutional Representation and Environmental ManagementPolicies modules. The agreement should be initiated in 2010.Município Verde Azul (Green Blue Municipality)To conquer the certificate of “Município Verde Azul”, granted by the State EnvironmentDepartment, a city must be rated above 80 in a scale from 0 to 100. The ratingcriteria are: treated sewage, minimum waste, reforestation of river banks, urbanforestation, environmental education, sustainable housing, water use, air pollution, environmental framework, and have an environment board. The water and sewage systems of approximately 62 percent of the cities that wereawarded the green Blue Seal in 2009 are operated by Sabesp (104 of the 168certified cities, from 570 assessed). The purpose of this initiative is to pay homageto the cities with the best environmental protection and awareness building practices.Sewage treatment is one of the analyzed criteria. In the first edition of the award, held in 2008, 44 of the 332 cities assessedconquered the award 28 of them (63.6%) received services from Sabesp.Pedro Beicht dam in the Alto Cotia System.Employees participateof an intensive courseto qualified102 Relatório de Sustentabilidade 2009 103
Good environmentalpracticesThroughout 2009, we developedseveral partnerships with thecommunity and NGOs to thebenefit of the environment.Jaguari nursery, in Vargem. One Million Trees in CantareiraEN13 Conducted in association with the NGOs The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Institutode Pesquisas Ecológicas (IPÊ) in three municipalities in the Bragança Paulista region, theobjective of the project “One Million Trees in Cantareira” is the recovery of the river bankforest around fives dams of the Cantareira producing system, maintaining the quality of thewatersheds responsible for 50 percent of the water consumed in the São Paulo metro area. This initiative, launched in March 2008, is intended also to involve the community in similarpreservation and remediation projects using native vegetation, exploiting the conditions forEN 18 Carbon Offset of the Sustainability ReportThe carbon emissions, direct and indirect, estimated at 12.8 tonnes of CO2-e, resultingfrom the preparation and printing of this report were offset by planting 81 youngAtlantic forest trees. In addition, because we opted to use recycled paper, emissionswere down by 3.3 tonnes of CO2e as compared to what would be issued had we usedwhite paper.foresting and eco-tourism.These partnerships prescribed the plantation of trees of the Atlantic forest and the cerradosavannah biomes, in approximately 1,000 hectares on the margins of the Jaguari-Jacareí,Cachoeira, Atibainha and Paiva Castro dams. In addition to the partnerships with entitiesand businesses, we have the support of the State Environment Department and the localmunicipal governments.Throughout 2009, 522,000 native seedlings were planted in 313 hectares, of which 21hectares (35,000 seedlings) were planted by TNC on the banks of the Cachoeira dams,in the municipality of Piracaia, sponsored by DOW Brasil. The IPÊ (Ecological Researchinstitute) planted, with the support of the National Environment Fund, Banco Itaú and GrupoBimbo, recuperated 24 ha (40,000 seedlings) in the Atibainha dam preservation areas,Nazaré Paulista, and in February 2009 entered into a contract amendment for the plantationof another 18 hectares.104 105
